AMAZING OPPORTUNITY A report from the ANNA conference, Perth. Thanks to NOGIN funding, I had the great pleasure of being able to attend my first Neuroscience (ANNA Conference- 39 th Annual Conference) Conference in Perth in October 2011. Due to a generous monetary support of $1200 from this organization, I was able to stay at the HYATT Regency in Perth City from the 5 th to 7 th October. The assistance helped cover my hotel costs and return airfares to Perth as well as conference registration costs. The theme of the ANNA Conference was Black and White or is it? The intention of my travel was to present my research study about the post discharge needs and challenges of primary brain tumour patients. This study was in partial fulfillment of my Bachelor of Honours degree at the Australian Catholic University, North Sydney. To conduct my study, I performed telephone interviews with patients from three private hospitals who had undergone surgical removal of a primary brain tumour. I also evaluated the Brain Tumour Support Package offered to patients at discharge in Westmead Private Hospital. Overall, the conference was fantastic! There was a wide range of topics and speakers from Australia and few from New Zealand. It was very exciting to listen to projects and studies that others in this field were involved in. I believe that it was certainly a worthwhile program as it was not only engaging, but well organized. The conference speakers gave me an opportunity to reflect on my own practice and to consider the use of evidence based practice in the workplace. I was challenged to acknowledge the not so black and white ethical issues governing our nursing practice. It also gave me the chance to realize the importance of research and continued development in neuroscience and nursing. I intend to share the knowledge gained from this conference with my colleagues through newsletters, in services and public display of my published work for staff to read. My deep appreciation goes to my university supervisor Dr Imke Fischer, the neuroscience CNC at Westmead Private- Emma Evringham, and all the staff at Westmead Private for their continual support and unswerving believe in my potential! With sincere gratitude, Bernice Appiah RN, East ward Westmead Private Hospital Student researcher at the Australian Catholic University, North Sydney Page 4 Volume 29
Stroke week September 12-16 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital As part of the awareness campaign for stroke nurses from the Stroke Unit at RPAH set up a display in the foyer of the hospital. As well as the display where people could get information about stroke, they could have their BP and BSL measured.by the nurses. Well done!
