Jemison First African-American woman in space 6 years NASA astronaut National Women s Hall of Fame inductee Thursday, February 26 7:00 pm Free Admission Toy F. Reid Employee Center* Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the first woman of color in the world to go into space, served six years as a NASA astronaut. She flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992 and was the science mission specialist on the STS-47 Spacelab US/Japan mission. Prior to joining NASA, Dr. Jemison was a general practitioner in Los Angeles with the INA/Ross Loos Medical Group. She then spent two and a half years as Area Peace Corps medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia in West Africa. She founded The Jemison Group, Inc. which focuses on the beneficial integration of science and technology into our everyday lives. She also founded and currently chairs The Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence. One of the programs of the foundation, The Earth We Share, is an annual international science camp. It hosts students from around the world, ages 12 to 16, to work together to solve current global dilemmas. Dr. Jemison has received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the National Women s Hall of Fame, National Medical Association Hall of Fame and Texas Science Hall of Fame. She also received the National Organization for Women s Intrepid Award, the Kilby Science Award, and in 1999 was selected as one of the top seven women leaders in a presidential ballot national straw poll.
