What is the function/mission of your department? The Center for Innovation (CI) helps innovators, students and entrepreneurs grow new and emerging ventures and bring new products and technologies to market. The Center enables successful product and company launches by providing early-stage launch guidance, strategies to securing funding, technical assistance as well as accessing the talent, technology and training at the University of North Dakota. The Center also provides market research support and feasibility evaluation services. As an unbiased, third party outreach service organization, the Center helps determine if a proposed venture or product can reach a potential market and generate a profit. The Center operates two start up business incubators, Skalicky and Ina Mae Rude, managed by the CI staff. The incubators offer space and workstations and the CI staff provide entrepreneurs with coaching services on a regular basis to help in the startup of their ventures. CI also sponsors and arranges workshops, outside speakers, and other special events aimed at honoring business success, promoting entrepreneurship, training innovative skills, and other educational opportunities for entrepreneurs. The Center for Innovation also manages special projects as needed to promote, assist, and facilitate the development and growth of innovation, small business and entrepreneurial ventures in North Dakota. 14. What is the purpose of your position? (Why does the position exist, how does the position function within the work unit?) The position is located at the UND Center for Innovation and will support CI clients and student entrepreneurial activity through the delivery of technical assistance, business venture development, and training programs. This position will also collaborate with local, regional and statewide partners in the entrepreneurial and innovation industry sectors to develop commercialization and training opportunities for CI Clients, student entrepreneurs and the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem. There is a secondary responsibility to include working with student experiential learning opportunities such as project-based internships, innovation and entrepreneurial mindset training, student entrepreneurship. 15. No. 1 10 Encourage business expansion through identification and recruitment of entrepreneur clients with a focus on SBIR/STTR grant potential. 1. Monitor SBIR/STTR funding opportunities and assess fit for outreach to faculty, students and entrepreneurial ecosystem to encourage potential applications to the grant program. 2. Examine, assess and identify prospective entrepreneur clients for Center for Innovation services and programs through personal visits, email, videoconference and telephone meetings. 3. Schedule, plan and implement fact-finding meetings with prospective clients and incubator tenants. 4. Identify and foster a network of entrepreneurial resources and develop peripherals to support clients and incubator tenants. 5. Determine the best course of action and service support needs for each prospective client and coach them to access and/or use those support needs as appropriate. 6. Follow up, maintain accurate documentation and track outcomes. No. 2 20 Coordinate and support Innovate ND and incubator tenant entrepreneurial coaching. 1. Lead the development of individualized commercialization plans for clients with technical assistance services including, but not limited to: concept development, market research, customer discovery, patent and trademark searches, commercialization plans, business plan, access to capital, mentoring and business consulting, acceleration and incubation. 2. Provide Innovate ND clients, incubator tenants and others with commercialization and venture development education and technical assistance services. 3. Coach and monitor progress of clients. 4. Provide clients with venture coaching and education to support commercialization and business expansion. 5. Refer clients to Center for Innovation programs such as business incubation, SBDC, Small Business Innovative Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR), and other ecosystem support services when appropriate. 6. Facilitate client connections with state and federal resources as needed. 7. Lead and advise clients in goal-setting activities. 8. Follow up, maintain accurate documentation and track outcomes. 2

No. 3 35 Mentor and oversee student interns and student entrepreneurs working with the Center for Innovation to develop businesses ideas and/or as part of student run ventures.. 1. Provide student interns and student entrepreneurs with venture development coaching and education in the areas of: concept development, market research, customer discovery, patent and trademark searches, commercialization plans, business plan, access to capital, mentoring and business consulting, acceleration and incubation. 2. Develop and manage any potential student run ventures supported by the Center for Innovation include formation, financing, experiential learning and ongoing long-term operational coaching. 3. Refer interns and student entrepreneurs to Center for Innovation programs such as business incubation, SBDC, Small Business Innovative Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR), and InnovateND when appropriate. 4. Identify and develop experiential, project-based learning internships in collaboration with the Center director for students to apply and develop professional skills. 5. Supervise student interns participating in Center programs such as the Mueller internship, Women & Business program and student run ventures, at a minimum. 6. Follow up, maintain accurate documentation and track outcomes. No. 4 15 Identify, develop and foster a network of mentors and commercialization resources with industry leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers, investors and others to support entrepreneurship in North Dakota. 1. Develop, maintain and engage a network of valuable members of the entrepreneurial ecosystem to support venture growth and development for clients and tenants of the Center for Innovation. 2. Keep constituents informed of the Center for Innovation activities and client programs and services. 3. Utilize the expertise of advisors and mentors as needed to help identify prospective clients and create internship opportunities. 4. Market and promote network and commercialization resources as appropriate to clients. 5. Follow up, maintain accurate documentation and track outcomes.
