REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS The major project of this Committee is the Union Catalog of Theological Source Materials and it is to the progress of this endeavor that the report will be directed. As of June 19S3 ten check lists have been circulated among the cooperating libraries and a total of over 900 titles have been searched and variations and locations reported by the institutions whose names appear on the list following the report. The Committee feels that the project has justified the investment of time and money necessary for its operation. Indeed, it has now reached the point, in the opinion of the Committee where some thought should be given to the publication of the results for distribution to the members of the Society and the cooperating libraries. This possibility will be investigated and a report made at the next meeting. The lists will continue to be circulated but in the future the titles will be selected according to plan and from standard sources, e.g., Hurter, Nomenclátor etc., etc. It is also the hope of the Committee that it will now be possible to devote more time to the verification of names, dates etc. and to the authority work in general. The past year brought the Society, through the medium of the Union Catalog, into contact with two outstanding European institutions the Dr. Williams' Library in London and the Administratiebureau der V.S.K.B. in Nijmegen, Netherlands. The Netherlands group is a union of Seminary and Monastery libraries who buy books cooperatively through a central agency and have attempted a listing of their holdings with locations after a plan somewhat similar to ours. We plan to exchange lists with both institutions and expect to receive a complete listing of the titles and locations of Administratiebureau. The progress made by the Society in compiling the Union Catalog is due to the constant encouragement and financial aid of His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Spellman, without whose assistance the project could not continue and to him we owe our first and greatest 184
