Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 Newsletter January 2018 President s Report I would like the take this opportunity to thank the 2017 Executive who have spent the last year working hard to make this Legion a better place. Many of you have put your own life on hold and sacrificed a great deal to dedicate yourself to this community. Thank you once again. We are all looking forward to 2018 and to see what we can accomplish now. This is our 90th anniversary year and Cde Stephen Troubridge is already at work planning ways to celebrate it (see article to follow). I also hope we have a little fun and enjoy the time we all spend doing all this. Please come out and support our great Winnipeg Beach Legion Branch #61. Lorraine Andrushuk, President Ways and Means Report Vera Ginter We have had a very busy fall raising money to keep the Legion running, upgrading the Legion and improving our bottom line. We started the Fall with a huge Fall Supper, followed by a Craft Sale, School Hot Dog Days, Bud Spud and Steak night, Remembrance Day services, Honors & Awards dinner, then finished off the year with a Volunteer/ Veterans Day dinner. The Ladies Auxiliary and Legion have worked very hard on all these events along with many outstanding members of the community. Thank you everyone! General Meeting The next General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 27 th at 7:10 p.m. Membership Report The Early Bird draw was held at the Honours & Awards Dinner on November 25, 2017. The lucky winner of a paid 2019 membership is Cummings Reid. Congratulations Cummings! Membership stats up to December 13 are 75 members of a possible total of current & paid members of 143 have renewed for 2018. We have 13 members needing to be contacted as they are showing non-current with their membership for 2017. TUESDAY MORNINGS @ 10:00 a.m. and THURSDAY EVENINGS @ 7:00 p.m. Please arrive a ½ hour early and bring clean shoes Bonus the Bar is open for the evening games! We will be having our Annual Golf Tournament during Legion Week in April. A sign-up poster will be out by mid March for the tournament. Feel free to drop in or contact Ray at 204-389-2127. Welcome to Chris Mulroy Ray Seidel, Sports Chair Chris Mulroy is our new Public Relations Chairperson and is creating our official new Branch #61 webpage coming mid-january www.winnipegbeachlegion.ca. Chris is also the administrator of our Facebook page. Comrades, 2018 marks the 90 th anniversary of the Winnipeg Beach Legion Branch #61. To commemorate this special occasion, we would like to have a community wide submission to the 2018 edition of the Military Service Recognition Book. The Military Service Recognition Book of veteran's histories and photos is published each year. Everyone is welcome to submit a history, including veterans, service personnel, relatives or friends. Branch membership not required. We would like to honour all those from our community that have served whether they are still with us, or have past away, as their stories are cornerstones to our community. The submission form is available from the branch office, or by e-mailing us at: rclbr61@mymts.net or by calling the branch at 204-389-2660. The deadline for submissions is June 15 th to the branch. The histories will then be compiled and submitted to the Provincial Command. Stephen Troubridge

Velma Darroux, Newsletter Chairperson Honours and Awards Report The Honours and Awards Dinner held on November 25, 2017 was a huge success. We had a good number of members in attendance as well as guests, and dignitaries. This year recipients received special Certificates to commemorate their service to the Legion from the Government of Manitoba. These were presented by Jeff Wharton, MLA for Gimli. Also, in attendance at the event were James Bezan, MP for the Interlake and the Town of Winnipeg Beach Mayor, Tony Pimentel. Good food and entertainment made for an enjoyable evening!
