Economic Growth Region 5 Statistical Data Report for November 2018, Released January 2019 State Employment and Unemployment Unemployment rates were lower in November in 6 states, higher in 2 states, and stable in 42 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Eighteen states had jobless rate decreases from a year earlier and 32 states and the District had little or no change. The national unemployment rate remained unchanged from October at 3.7 percent but was 0.4 percentage point lower than in November 2017. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 4 states in November 2018 and was essentially unchanged in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Over the year, 37 states added nonfarm payroll jobs and 13 states and the District were essentially unchanged. TED: The Economics Daily U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Long-term unemployed down to 1.3 million in November In November 2018, the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent for the third month in a row, and the number of unemployed persons was little changed at 6.0 million. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) declined by 120,000 to 1.3 million in November. These individuals accounted for 20.8 percent of the unemployed. In November, there were 2.1 million unemployed for less than 5 weeks, accounting for about 35 percent of all unemployed. About 1.8 million were unemployed for 5 to 14 weeks, accounting for about 30 percent of all unemployed. These data are from the Current Population Survey.
