American Legion Post 83 Newsletter July-August 2018 3650 River Road, P.O. Box 40643, Eugene, OR 97404 Phone: 541-689-5451 Facebook: www.facebook.com/amlegionpost83 Website: https://post83.wordpress.com E-mail: alpost83@hotmail.com Commander's Message One of the things I like most about being Commander is seeing all you great people coming together to get the job done!!! What a wonderful job done by so many hard workers, during the annual clean-up day. By the time I arrived the cedar tri-tree was gone from the south side. The guys made short order of trimming and cutting it up. The clean-up was a breeze. We saved the post several hundred dollars on that one. Way to go! Speaking of saving big bucks. The concrete pad project is progressing nicely and is well under budget. I am hoping it will be finished this week. (3 rd week of June). A big shout out to Keith Owens for staying on top of this important project. We are looking forward to the Annual Chicken Feed, next month, to be on the new pad. Thanks to all of you who have donated to the charcoal supply. We can always use more. There are plans in the making for additional BBQs to be announced. This Post is blessed with a bunch of givers. Givers of time, labor, charcoal, skills, cans, and bottles, and money. Our friend Stan, who rarely misses a post dinner, donated about 8 big bags of cans, which made a nice deposit in our lawn maintenance fund. Thanks Stan! One thing I learned about being a Commander, was to recognize people for a job well done. On this score, I have failed miserably. Oh sure, I will shake hands or pat on the back and say thanks. I genuinely mean it for sure, but Karol Satterfield put me to shame at the recent Officer Installation/Awards ceremony. She gave out a ton of certificates and thanks you things. I guess that s what you learn after being a faithful leader for as many years as she has. A true blessing to our Post! The Flag Ceremony was a success! Again, this year, we had a couple of fill-ins, who did a great job on such short notice, due to excusable family obligations. Thanks to the scouts and their leaders for another stellar job. We couldn t do it without them. I am toying with the idea of doing it next year on Flag Day, Friday the 14 th of June at 7:00pm. Please let us/me know what you think of this idea. We could have a regular dinner or a pot-luck preceding it. For God and Country, Commander Pierre Lord, take into your most gracious protection our service members currently deployed. May you be their comfort and their guide as they live and walk in a foreign land. Give them reassurance that you are a shield around them, an ever-present help in time of need. Grant our service members courage so that in all things they may serve without reproach. Encourage them while they also encourage one another. Amen. Greetings, Auxiliary News This month, you are receiving two calendars in your newsletter, JULY and AUGUST, printed back-toback. Make sure you keep them handy so you don't miss any events! We are switching things up a bit with our breakfast times. July and August breakfast hours will be 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Mothers and Fathers Day Breakfasts were well attended during our special brunch hours. Thank you for your support! Let us know what you think of the summer hours. Our volunteers always strive to give you a great meal to enjoy. If you would like to see a meal or an event on the calendar, please offer your suggestions. We're always receptive to new ideas and input. We are here for you, the members! We're also in need of volunteers to help with preparation of food (sides) for the Chicken BBQ coming up on July 21-22. Also needed are smiling faces to help serve the meals. (Help package dinners, carry to customers/cars, etc.) If you can help let myself, Carl or Pierre know! This is the 40 th year for our Chicken BBQ, let's make it our best ever! Join the Post Family for good food and fun at the annual Post Picnic on August 18 th, 12 noon. Please bring a dish to share. The Post will provide burgers, hot dogs and roasted sweet corn. NEW this year, Outdoor Bingo! Each card has 4 bingo boards (pull-tabs, no daubers needed), we'll sell them for $1 each. Proceeds from this game will go towards our school supply fund-raiser. I'll give you an account of the big Yard Sale (held 6/23) in the September newsletter. I hope to see you at some (or all) of our summer events! I wish you all a fun and safe summer! Till then, Service not Self, Karol Satterfield, Unit President JUNIOR GIRLS AUXILIARY NEWS We are off to a great start for the summer. Five Juniors attended the Flag Retirement Ceremony and we'll also have a few helping at the Yard Sale this month. Juniors continue to help with the SAL Fish Fry each month. We are having a meeting on July 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Post. We always welcome any new members who might want to participate. Juniors will also be at the Patriots Day Car Show and the 9/11 Ceremony in September. We're very proud of our young women and their enthusiasm is greatly appreciated! Margie DeMoss, Youth Activities Chairman
SAL Commander's Note " Where's The Beef "? The SAL has it and on July 13 th and 14 th you can too! Big steaks, low price! We will grill 30 steaks, (average weight 24 ounces), each night. They will be served with a baked potato and salad. The price will be $13.00 for an individual dinner or you can share a steak with your spouse or a friend for $16.00. It will include the extra sides, of course. Dinners will be served between 5 and 7 p.m. Steaks will be grilled to order. Tickets will be pre-sold in the lounge beginning July 4th. You will choose your seating time when you purchase your ticket/s. Summer is our busy time with many events including the Steak Feed, Chicken B-B-Q, Riders Legacy Poker Ride (8/4 our Post hosting the last stop on Ride), Hot Rods for Heroes Car Show (9/9) and of course, Fish Fries the last Friday of each month. The best part, all events are growing. If you would like to help with any of our events, sign up or talk with an officer. We'd love additional help! Looking back at last year, the SAL has grown, not just in membership but also, in the donations we were able to make to charities, both local, state and national. We thank those who have made this increase possible by participating in our events. Looking ahead we'll be busy. We are predicting our Christmas tree sales will almost double! We'll be serving a wider range of food items in our Lounge, too. Our August Fish & Shrimp Fry proceeds will be designated for Veterans Legacy Camp Alma. It is an organization who provides support for veterans in Lane Co. in a rural setting. Visit https://veteranslegacyoregon.org/ to learn more about this worthy organization. Once again it comes down to manpower. The more volunteers we have, the more we can do. We have big events coming up each month this summer and each will be larger than last years. If you have some time, we could use your help! You do not have to be a SAL member to assist us. Let me again, thank everyone for last years success and because of that success this years potential. Carl Pawlik, SAL Commander Riders Director's Note Our Riders have a raffle going for an ALR Duffel Bag. Tickets are $5 each and are available from the bartender in the Lounge. The drawing will be held at our August 23rd meeting. The Duffel Bag was donated by Jim Saville. Welcome to our newest member, Brent Johnson. He has also stepped up to be our Historian. We have not had a Historian in many years, possibly ever! Thank you, Brent! ROMP was May 31 and we several Riders made the trip. The 1st annual State ROMP will be the weekend of August 10th 12th. Post 158 in Tigard is hosting. For more information, go to https://www.oregonalriders.org or email: 2018oregonromp@gmail.com. Post 83 Riders, along with the help of our SAL and Post are hosting the 2nd Annual Veterans Legacy Poker Ride on August 4. Be sure you register, participate and of course, help make this event a success! We are always looking for more Riders to join our association. We meet the 4th Thursday of each month, 6 p.m. at the Post. John Hampton, Director
