2017 YOUNG COMMUNITY DEVELOPERS ANNUAL REPORT 1715 Yosemite Avenue San Francisco, CA 94124 www.ycdjobs.org

2017 YOUNG COMMUNITY DEVELOPERS 2017 was an incredible year for Young Community Developers! We served over 1,700 individuals in several capacities and placed over 800 people in jobs and careers. In addition to job and career placements, YCD was selected for the fifth year in a row as one of the best nonprofits to work for by The Nonprofit Times. This is a tremendous milestone and a testament to the dedication of the remarkable YCD team. ANNUAL REPORT As we embark on 2018, we are excited about continuing to provide sector-based trainings, extensive barrier mitigation services, and job and career placement services. We are also proud to announce our inaugural Trade Union Pre-Apprenticeship Entrance Exam preparation course, an innovative new math program focused on supporting residents of San Francisco s District 10 to overcome barriers and access jobs that could help them play a role in building the future of their city. The twelveweek math academy will help prepare students to take and pass the entrance exams for skilled trade labor unions. In addition to new trainings and more preparation opportunities, YCD is working towards developing social enterprise opportunities with plans to acquire our very own facility. We would like to thank all of our funders, supporters, friends, and the entire YCD family for supporting our work, and we look forward to continuing to eliminate barriers for employment as a tactic for the preservation of our community. Sincerely, Shamann Walton Young Community Developers, Inc. 2018 1715 Yosemite Avenue San Francisco, CA 94124 www.ycdjobs.org Shamann Walton, MPA Executive Director 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 1

Established in 1973, Young Community Developers (YCD) is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization RACE / ETHNICITY AGE GROUP that provides a variety of education- and employment-focused training opportunities for residents of the Southeast Sector of San Francisco. YCD supports residents to become independent and productive members of society, which in turn contributes to building and sustaining a positive community. Approximately 1,700 individuals per year receive employment and training-related services through YCD. Our 45-year history in the Bayview, combined with a high percentage of our staff being natives of the neighborhood, gives us the advantage of being intimately familiar with contextual realities of our local clientele, making it possible to tailor individual support in a powerful and personalized way. Our staff are representative of our diverse community, reflecting a broad range of racial/ethnic identities and age groups. While most live in the neighborhoods we serve, collectively we represent geographies from across the entire Bay Area. 69% 9% 13% 2% 5% 2% AFRICAN AMERICAN MULTI RACE LATINO SOUTH OF ASIA ASIAN SAMOAN GENDER IDENTITY 31% MALE 69% FEMALE 16-24 25-34 35-44 45-54 55+ 7% 49% 22% 11% 11% 2 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 3

OUR MISSION The mission of YCD is to empower and inspire Southeast Sector residents to engage in employment and educational opportunities. Through the use of comprehensive preparation and training techniques targeting enhancement of workforce readiness coupled with an additional set of inclusive services, YCD assists in the removal of employment and education barriers for our disenfranchised residents. Passionately committed to the preparation, placement, and preservation of our Southeast Sector residents, YCD works to support the personal and professional development of our individual clients, the development of their families, and the economic development of their neighborhoods. 4

OUR PROGRAMS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES YCD s Youth Development (YD) Team assists our youth in their overall development and continued enrichment through job readiness training, academic support, and mentorship. Youth ages 14 to 24 gain a sense of community ownership through partnerships with community organizations and financial independence. YD team consists of engaged and diverse professionals committed to providing the skills for youth to become successful adults. We provide our youth with the framework to make, reach, and fulfill their future goals and aspirations. RE-ENTRY SERVICES YCD s Re-Entry team offers services designed to assist highly at-risk and in-risk individuals, aged 14 to 35, involved in the justice system. We provide customers with paid job readiness training, subsidized work experience, supportive services for employment and/or educational placements connected to their career interests, as well as intensive case management to remove barriers to employment, including referrals to collaborative partners for additional resources. ADULT TRAINING SERVICES YCD offers several job readiness training (JRT) programs and employment support services to our adult customers. Training programs are targeted towards the general population served as well as adults identified as high-risk or formerly incarcerated men and women reentering the workforce. YCD Case Managers work closely with all YCD customers in the delivery of employment support services, fully supporting residents in their search and selection of job opportunities. In addition, YCD provides financial assistance to our customers to remove various barriers to employment and/or educational advancement. HOUSING & ANTI-DISPLACEMENT SERVICES YCD is working to target the housing affordability crisis in the Southeast Sector of San Francisco through the acquisition, preservation, and development of affordable housing. To support our goal of eliminating the vulnerability to displacement that our residents experience, YCD continues to collaborate with other organizations throughout San Francisco, sharing and proposing strategies and policies to advance our work towards more affordable housing. To date, YCD has been a part of developing 60 units of affordable housing at Pacific Point on the Shipyard, and currently has 156 units of affordable housing in the pipeline at Candlestick Park Block 10A. 6 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 7
