Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance AMR Intergovernmental Workshop Paris, 17 November, 2015 Mats Ulfendahl Chair JPIAMR

Why joint programming JPIAMR today Activities Concept

Why Joint Programming? Establishing the ERA a European research area in which researchers, scientific knowledge and technology circulate freely, and encouraging it to become more competitive */ Addressing the grand challenges Global! */ From the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union

Antibiotic resistance: One of the Greatest Threats to Public Health

A major societal challenge requiring joint and coordinated actions Global challenges need global solutions Without a coordinated global response, humanity will not overcome the challenges it faces. (Subra Suresh, Nature 2012)

About JPIAMR The Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) joins forces across nations to fight AMR through effective collaborative actions in areas of unmet needs.

JPIAMR s added value World-wide cooperation to align international resources to enable joint actions in areas of unmet needs. A platform to take AMR combat from awareness to action. Supporting international research and facilitating its translation to industry and policy. Shared common strategic research agenda to align national priorities and coordinated actions

Strategic Research Agenda Scientific Advisory Board National expert panels Online consultation Stakeholder involvement

Working together 22 countries to date have joined forces to define a common vision, a strategic research agenda and joint planning as well as implementation of national research programmes Argentina Canada Belgium Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany Greece Israel Italy Japan the Netherlands Norway Poland Romania Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey United Kingdom

Implementing the Strategic Research Agenda 2015-2017 1. Mapping the AMR landscape 2. Developing International Collaboration 3. Exploratory / Scoping workshops 4. Calls for Research Proposals 5. Alignment of Research Programs

1. Mapping the AMR research landscape Funding source 19 JPIAMR countries Total no of projects (2007-2013) Total funding (EUR) % of total funding % of total funding incl EC and IMI 1,129 646,646,541 67.3% 49.5% EC 105 314,072,980 32.7% 50.5% IMI 9 345,128,438 - Overall 1,234 1,305,847,959 100% 100% A mapping exercise and gap analysis to find scale and scope of research activities and creating frameworks of evaluation. 3. Exploratory/scoping workshops For example: Diagnostics Research Infrastructures Transmission Dynamics To bring together experts from diverse fields To identify future joint actions To identify knowledge gaps

4. Calls for Research Proposals Annual Joint Calls with national funding agencies One example: Innovative approaches to address antibacterial resistance 14 funding agencies from 12 countries with a total budget of 13.8M Projects covered areas within prevention of infection, therapy, drug development, target identification, and pharmacokinetics

4. Calls for Research Proposals The possibility to complement our expertise with other research groups made our proposal so much stronger. Mariel Pickermann, PI of REBEL, a JPIAMR funded project looking at restoring the antibacterial activity of β-lactam antibiotic.

5. Alignment of Research Programs For example: Mapping National Plans Mapping Research Programs Aligning national plans/programs with the SRA Identifying areas around the SRA to syncronise/align national calls
