WINTER 2018 That s right! Cal Poly Pomona s Women in Engineering program has been on this campus for 5 years providing resources and supportive services to succeed in engineering. Over the last few years, WE has grown in the number of students involved and the impact it has had in the surrounding area! The largest STEM event WE hosts is called Introduce a Girl to Engineering and during the event middle school girls will participate in a variety of engineering activities. This year Introduce a Girl will be on February 26th! Read more about the event on page 5. In honor of the 5th anniversary of the Women in Engineering program, our Fall quarter ambassador meeting was a birthday party! We had cupcakes, carnival games, and our ambassadors had the chance to win a variety of exciting prizes. They had to play and win 3 games to get a prize from our prize board. The games included ring toss, paper airplane toss, mini golf, and ping pong toss. There was even a nice photo booth for our ambassadors to enjoy. We hope that you can join us at our next ambassador meeting later this quarter! Keep an eye on your email for your invitation. 607 PAID summer research opportunities across the country Research topics are available in multiple different STEM fields! Having a eye caching resume is key to getting your dream job. Some ways you can build your resume to catch the eye of a recruiter are: Include your accomplishments on the job along with your job experience to highlight what you can contribute to the specific job you are applying to. Instead of a typical objective statement, try a short and sweet career summary including who you are and what you have done relative to the job you are applying for. Keep it Simple! Don t include paragraphs of things you have done. Try putting bullet points so that you can expand on them during your interview. Make sure your resume is in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest) when listing involvement and previous job experience. Keep it up to date! Try to update it at least once a quarter so that when you need it, you have one with everything you have done. For more help improving your resume visit the Career Center at Campus Marketplace! CAMPARE program provides paid summer research opportunities for majors in any field of science or engineering in physics, astronomy and astrophysics, planetary science, astrobiology, and related fields at 15 world-class research institutions. Internships are 8-10 weeks long (Perfect for the short summer because of semester conversion) For more information, visit: http://www.cpp.edu/~sci/physics-astronomy/research/ campare.shtml

The WE Chat for the Chemical Engineering department consisted of Dr. Ontiveros coming in to speak about her experiences of becoming a chemical engineer. Dr. Ontiveros studied at Cal Poly Pomona for her undergraduate and received her Ph.D. at Princeton University. During her schooling and after graduation, Dr. Ontiveros has specialized in corrosion. In 1984, she joined the College of Engineering faculty and for the last two years assumed the position of Interim dean. Before rejoining the CSU system as faculty, she worked for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center and at the Getty Oil Co. Research Center. She is a registered professional engineer in chemical engineering with the state of California. Thank you Dr. Ontiveros for coming to chat with us! Dr. Lisa Wang spoke at the Civil Engineering WE Chat. Dr. Wang is a professor in the civil engineering department after having worked in industry. She received her PhD from UC Irvine with an emphasis in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. Dr. Wang spoke of her journey obtaining her degree and career. She advised us on how she balanced her career and personal life to achieve the position she holds today. Thank you Dr. Wang for coming to chat with us also!

The 4th annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering will be taking place on Monday February 26th. During the event there will be 100-200 middle school girls from the surrounding area coming to Cal Poly Pomona to participate in engineering activities. The purpose of the event is to teach students about engineering in hopes of inspiring the girls to pursue a career in engineering. Example of activities that we have done in the past are building a motor, designing a roller coaster out of tubing, and creating a bridge that supported weight. This year we are looking for college students to help us find new activities in all majors, especially chemical, industrial, and aerospace. Ways you can volunteer: Brainstorm Activities Lead activities Volunteer the day of the event We understand the event is on a Monday and due to your class schedule it is alright if you are able to volunteer for only part of the event. Lunch and a free shirt will be provided.

Engineering is the closest thing to magic that exists in the world. -Elon Musk We hope you had a wonderful break and a great holiday season with your friends and family! WE wishes you luck in this next quarter and hopes to see you all soon at upcoming events!
