CONTEST RULES AND CRITERIA Contest Criteria: Eligible participants include all current students of Gustavus Adolphus College with the exception of the Culpeper Technology and Language Specialists. 1 Artwork must be an original piece of work that would be suitable for display and mounting on a Center wall. Traditional and digital photographs are not eligible, though mixed media will be accepted. Artwork should include one or more of these themes: language, technology, and culture. Entrants may begin submitting their work on October 1, 2017, and the deadline for submission is Tuesday, December 1, 2017 at 5:00pm. Artwork must be suitable for all audiences. No depictions of nudity will be accepted. Each individual may submit no more than two submissions, and submissions must not have previously won an award or been published. For each submission, the Official Entry and Release Form must be submitted along with the submission (artwork) by the above deadline for consideration. Each entry must also provide an audio file, preferably in Mp3 format reading their description / inspiration for their piece which will also be posted to the website. Please record in a quite environment, if you need help you can record in the Culpeper Center. Please send recordings to artcontest@gustavus.edu. Prizes: First Prize will receive $100. Second Prize will receive $25. Third Prize will receive a $20 Bookmark gift card or a prize worth approximately $20 from the Bookmark. Please note: winnings are considered taxable income. At the discretion of the Director of the Culpeper Language Learning Center, winning entries may be displayed in the Center. 1 References to Technology and Language Specialists in the Contest Rules and Criteria refer to those student employees employed in this capacity, regardless of their official titles.

Judging Each submission will be photographed and photographs of each submission along with the name of the artist, title of piece, medium, and description/inspiration of the piece will be available for browsing on the Culpeper Language Learning Center website. An individual who wants to provide their own photograph of their submission may do so. Please note all submission photographs appearing on the contest site (whether supplied by the artist or taken by the Culpeper Language Learning Center) are subject to distortions, resizing, and cropping. After the deadline for submission has past, Physical Submissions will be available during the voting week for the public to view in person at times which will be later determined. (To be included on the voting submission page) Judging Winners of the First, Second, and Third Prizes will be decided by a voting score derived from a combination of votes from the following 2 voting groups. The submission with the highest voting score will win First Prize, the submission with the second highest voting score will win Second Prize, and the submission with the third highest voting score will win Third Prize. Votes from each group are worth approximately 50% of the overall voting score: 1. Popular Vote: The popular vote will occur through an online voting system where voters will each select their two favorite submissions. See the scoring example below to see how this would work in a sample situation. Any individual with a functioning Gustavus account and password is eligible to vote in this category. 2. Limited Vote: The following individuals are eligible to vote in this category: The Director of the Culpeper Language Learning Center, members of the Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department, and the Culpeper Technology and Language Specialists. Again, see the below scoring example for how this vote will function. Votes in this group will give special consideration to the description/inspiration for the artistic piece, inspection of the physical submission, if the piece portrays at least one theme of the contest (they may judge higher for use of multiple themes depending on the voter s preference), and other preferences of the individual voter. Online judging will begin Friday, December 1, 2017 at 5:00pm, or soon after, and will close on Thursday, December 7, 2017 by midnight. Judging: Ties In the case of a tie in either category, the Director of the Culpeper Language Learning Center along with the Contest Coordinator will make the final decision. If one of them is unavailable, the other will solely make the decision.

Other Information Artwork submissions winning become property of the Culpeper Language Learning Center. All other entrants retain ownership of their artwork submissions, assuming they retrieve them from the Culpeper Language Learning Center bythe deadline listed above. Non-winning entrants are encouraged to donate their submissions to the Culpeper Language Learning Center. Unforeseen situations (or situations that have not been discussed herein) related to contest criteria, prizes, judging, and other situations, will be dealt with on a case-bycase basis.
