VISIONARY VOICES SUPPORTING THE VETERANS VICTORY SCHOLARSHIP FOR NATIONAL UNIVERSITY MILITARY VETERAN STUDENTS 2013 National University 12605 A TRIBUTE TO OUR VETERANS

VISIONARY VOICES A TRIBUTE TO OUR VETERANS SUPPORTING THE VETERANS VICTORY SCHOLARSHIP FOR NATIONAL UNIVERSITY MILITARY VETERAN STUDENTS THE NEED Two strategic government developments are affecting troops seeking education. The many thousands returning from war zones often encounter challenges that interrupt their GI Bill benefits, and the reduction in force by the Defense Department is causing delays in the administration of benefits. As a result, veterans often require supplemental assistance. Institutional resources cannot always meet the sudden demand. In addition, scholarships become essential when GI benefits expire before an academic program is complete. National University has a long and productive relationship with all branches of the military. Currently National University serves approximately 7,000 enrolled veteran students. You have the opportunity to support our veterans and show the gratitude they deserve in the form of something priceless --education. Please consider contributing to this noble effort. Funds raised for the Veterans Victory Scholarship are used for veteran students only, and make an enormous impact on their lives. SUMMARY OF NATIONAL UNIVERSITY S MILITARY INVOLVEMENT National University has nine on-base learning centers and one on-base admissions office. 2012 marked the third year in a row that National University has been honored as a Military Friendly School. This honor places National University in the top 15 percent of schools nationwide. The University has also been a winner of the prestigious Ray Ehrensberger Award. The award recognizes accredited institutions that have distinguished themselves through innovative and dedicated contributions to the principles of military education. National University has also participated in the Military Installation Voluntary Education Review (MIVER) since 1994. National University offers online courses at discounted rates to active duty military personnel and their dependents. On-base classes are offered for qualified students including active duty members, their spouse and dependents, Department of Defense employees, military retirees, and selective military reserve members.

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR VETERAN STUDENT SUCCESS The Center is the result of a $621,299, three-year grant that was awarded to the National University Department of Student Services by the U.S. Department of Education s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). The Center is a centralized point for the coordination of services that focuses on four key areas: Improving Quality of Life The Center promotes healthy minds and healthy bodies an essential component to veteran student success. The Center offers community- and Center-sponsored health and wellness events and Wounded Warrior information and resources. 1. Easing veterans transition to campus life Building A Social Network 2. Increasing retention Veterans are the first to receive the latest news on locally and National University-sponsored veteran social and career events and volunteer activities. 3. Improving achievement of educational and career goals 4. Providing a higher quality of life through the coupling of pre-existing services and support with newly created programming specifically developed to meet the needs of veteran students Spectrum Campus, Suite 171 9388 Lightwave Avenue San Diego, CA 92123 Securing Our Veterans Future The Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success serves as a centralized point for veteran students to access integrated academic, career, networking, and wellness services. The Center is strategically located in San Diego, CA a national hub for military personnel however, all National University veteran students can benefit regardless of locale. HOW WILL VETERANS BENEFIT FROM THE CENTER? Easing Veterans Transition to University Life The Pathways to Success program features an interactive orientation course, which provides information on accessing key VA educational benefits, tools to bolster academic skills, forums for engaging with veteran peers, and strategies for navigating university life. The Center is also equipped with computers, printers, and a student lounge for studying and socializing. Reaching Veterans Educational Goals The Center offers on-site academic skill-building workshops. In addition, the Military Peer-to-Peer Mentoring program helps veterans achieve academic success, so they can finish their degree on time and graduate. Preparing Veterans for the Workforce Veterans can stop in for career counseling and advising. They can also find internship opportunities, job postings, and job fair announcements. Whether veterans are looking for the latest career networking events or a resumé-building workshop, the Center has something for everyone. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT OUR VETERANS AND SHOW THE GRATITUDE THEY DESERVE IN THE FORM OF SOMETHING PRICELESS EDUCATION.

1. WHAT IS VISIONARY VOICES - A TRIBUTE TO OUR VETERANS? Visionary Voices - A Tribute to Our Veterans is a fund raising dinner for the Veterans Victory Scholarship. The Veterans Victory Scholarship is an important piece of National University s ongoing, nationally recognized efforts to provide accessible and affordable college educations to those who have served in the military. To spearhead the campaign, community business leader, E. Marie Landers, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of Wells Fargo Commercial Banking Group, is leading the charge as Chair of the Second Annual Visionary Voices fundraising dinner being held at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 19, at the Marriott Marquis & Marina. 2. WHAT DOES THE VETERANS VICTORY SCHOLARSHIP DO? The scholarship is used exclusively to provide funds for National University veteran students. Available funds are dispersed based on academic achievement, community achievement, or financial need. 3. WHY DO VETERANS NEED THESE FUNDS? Veteran students continue to encounter delays, benefit interruption, or benefit expiration prior to completion of an academic program. In addition, the Defense Department is implementing a reduction in forces across all branches of the military. National University wants to be prepared to assist veterans with the funds needed to pursue or continue their educational goals. 4. WHY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY FOR VETERANS?» National University has over approximately 7,000 veteran students.» National University supports veteran students through the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success. The center is the result of a $621,299, three-year grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).» According to the Department of Education, the U.S. student loan default rate is nine percent. In comparison, National University s student loan default rate is four percent. VISIONARY VOICESFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS» National University is the second-largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California.» National University has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 1977. 5. REAL EXAMPLES OF HOW FUNDING HAS ALREADY HELPED VETERANS. Air Force Reserves veteran and new father Calvin-Paul Stewart works full-time while completing his multiple-subject teaching credential. He has gained high marks as a student teacher and currently maintains a 3.9 GPA. The Veterans Victory Scholarship helped him after he was denied a supplemental loan to pay for two classes last year, and also covered fees for his Teacher Performance Assessments. Navy veteran Lisa Taylor aspires to be a nurse. Her G.I. Bill funding was held up for several months, and the delay depleted her emergency funds and savings. This scholarship will help me to get back on my feet and concentrate fully on my studies, she said. Navy veteran Ryan Boyle will earn a bachelor s degree in history. He receives a G.I. Bill stipend each month but it doesn t adequately cover his expenses. The Veteran s Victory Scholarship provides significant peace of mind by relieving economic instability, he said.
