Online registration has not been opened yet, but the deadline to register has been set for December 15. Delegates learn about the democratic process and their role as citizens while they experience our nation s capital. They will get the inside scoop about how government really works from prominent guest speakers. In addition, they will participate in bill writing workshops, a national issues forum, mock elections, and congressional sessions that prepare you for leadership now and in the future. The group will tour most of the sites in and around our nation s capital. The past few years they had a private after hour s tour of the capital and access to restricted area. Applicants must be 14 years of age by January 1, 2019. Transportation will be by chartered bus to and from Washington, D.C. departing from the State Extension Office in Little Rock. Scholarships may be available. This is a great program for 4-H ers to learn and experience Washington D.C.! If this is a trip you are planning to go on next year, please be sure and let the office know as soon as possible. The slots fill up fast. Also if you plan to go on this trip, you will need to be sure and help with the BBQ Bowl Fundraiser next February. Clover Crews News Upcoming Camps Several camps are being offered at the C.A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center in Ferndale this fall. If you have any questions or need help registering, call the Howard County Extension Office at 870-845-7517. Forestry & Wildlife Camp: October 19-21. For Basic and advance. Are you interested in the great outdoors? If so, you may want to attend this camp. Forestry and Wildlife Camp is open to all 4-H ers between the ages 10-18. Sessions will focus on entomology, field/forestry measurements, wildlife, nature photography, and Cake Decorating If you would like to learn to decorate cakes for fun or to start a business, a statewide cake decorating camp is being offered. Registration for this camp is due October 1. There will be three age divisions. Each camp will be held at different times. JR/SR 4-H ers-$200, November 2-4, limited to 20 trapping/population analysis. Registration is available on 4honline. Remember, you must re-enroll to register for this camp. Ages: 10-13- Basic Camp and 14-18- Advance Camp Fee: $160.00 Deadline to register is October 1, 2018. (youth only) Cloverbuds- $400, November 30-December 2, Limited to 10 youth (Parent/ guardian must also attend, fee covers both youth and parent/guardian) Adults: $275, December 14-16, limited to 20 (adults only) AR 4-H High Adventure Horse Packing Program: 2018 Training Sessions The training sessions are open to all ages; however, under 13, must attend with registered adult and youth attending alone must be able to care for and saddle their own horse. Must bring your own horse. Training session 1: Tentative Location- Sorghum Hollow Horse Camp- March 10 ($100), Topics: Gear/Tack & Trial etiquette (Deadline March 1) Training Session 2: Tentative Location- Devil s Den: May 19-20 ($150), Topics: Camp Site set-up, Picket line, Hobbling, Minor Cooking (Deadline May 10) Training Session 3: Tentative Location- Lonesome D Horse Camp: September 29-30 ($150), Topics: Cooking, How to Pack (Deadline September 20) Training Session 4: Tentative Location- Devil s Den: November 16-18 ($225), Topics: Review and Practice Skills (deadline November 1) Locations listed are tentative and may change depending on weather and trail conditions. The 2019 Out of State High Adventure Horse Packing Program is scheduled for June 23-30, 2019 at Daniel Boone National Forrest, Kentucky and is open to youth age 13 by January 1, 2019 and adults. Spaces will be limited. Selection for those attending the 2019 out of state trip will be based on Training Session Attendance (must have attended 3 of the sessions, Sessions 4 must be one of those 3), rider and horse abilities, and number of spaces available. (Those that attended the 2017 HP Out of state trip are only required to attend session 4)
October 2018 4-H Month: Suggested Activities October 1-31- One Day of Service = A Month of Service (A.M.O.S) A.M.O.S enables each 4-H member to recruit friends to help make their communities better through adopting a service project. One Day of Service will be any day in October that you choose! 4-H Promotion month is in October so what a perfect way to promote 4-H by serving others. These projects can be done as individuals or as an entire county 4-H program. Use social media to announce (Facebook or Twitter) the event and post photos of 4-H'ers doing community service on Facebook, Twitter or the Website. October 7- Healthy Living Day!!! Focus on a Healthy Lifestyle project (bicycling for health, running for health, yoga for kids, Zumba, preparing healthy snack for a selected group, walking on the local track). October 8- Media Day!!! It's National 4-H Week! Provide the local newspaper with articles written by members, volunteers, alumni and donors or do PSA about 4-H at your local radio station. If you would like to do a PSA about 4-H, contact Ms. Jennifer at the Extension Office at 870-845-7517. She can help get it set up. October 9-4-H Spirit Day!!! ( Show your 4-H pride & wear the Clover) Advertise a wear-green day and the clover. Distribute green and white mints to everyone who wears green that day; or distribute tickets to a fun 4-H event. Use social media to announce (Facebook or Twitter) the event and post photos on Facebook, or the Website. October 10- Citizenship Day!!! Host an "appreciation day" for police officers, the fire department, elected officials, city/county employees, teachers, or others. Set up a 4-H exhibit at the county courthouse and talk to county officials and the public about 4-H. October 11- Make a 4-H Video Day!!! Make a promotional video or Podcast. Post on the county or state website, Facebook or YouTube. Please let the office know, if you are planning to do this activity! October12- Donor & Supporter s Recognition Day!!! Write thank you notes; mail them a DVD, pictures or videos of the past year's 4-H highlights or distribute One Million Dollar candy bars with a note: You're worth more than this. Thanks for being a friend to 4-H. October 13- Local Restaurant Day!!!! Select 2 to 3 restaurants in your county and place 4-H promotional place mats in the restaurants. We can help you get placemats or you can make your own. Contact the office at least two weeks before the activity, if your club is interested in the placemats. Also, please let the Howard County Extension Office know what activities you are planning. We will keep a list of them so we can know what all has been done! Arkansas State Fair Skillathons SKILL-A-THON GUIDELINES ENTRY FEE: FREE ENTRY DEADLINE: On-Site Entry Only Competitions are open to individuals who have at least one approved livestock entry in the current year s Arkansas State Fair. Competition will be divided into two age divisions: Ø Junior Division: Ages 9 13 on the opening day of the current year s Arkansas State Fair. Ø Senior Division: Ages 14 & up on the opening day of the current year s Arkansas State Fair Each Division (Junior & Senior) will consist of a series of 6 stations relative to the Beef Project. Student Resources and contact information is listed below. This contest is run under the direction of the Arkansas State Fair Livestock Department in conjunction with members of the ASF Skill-A-Thon Committee. No pre-entry is available for this contest. On-site entry only. Entry Fee is FREE! Each contestant should bring pencils and a clipboard to the contest. Score cards and identification lists will be provided. Contestants must remain in the designated contest area while competing. If special assistance is needed by the contestant, please notify the registration desk at time of entry. No electronic devices will be allowed while competing. Once a contestant completes a station, they will turn in their scorecards to the station monitor for tabulation. COMPETITION STRUCTURE The following is a list of stations contestants must complete. Breed Identification Identify from photographs 20 sheep breeds. Senior contestants must also match the breed with the most appropriate description supplied for each breed. Livestock Equipment Identification Identify the proper name for 15 pieces of equipment used in sheep production. (A list of equipment will be provided.) Retail Meat Cut Identification Identify lamb retail cuts from photographs. Junior contestants will identify 10 retail cuts with only the retail cut name. Senior contestants will identify 15 retail cuts including the primal cut and retail cut name. while seniors identify 15 feeds. (A list of feeds will be provided.) Quiz Juniors will complete a 15 question and Seniors will complete a 25 question multiple choice quiz concerning the sheep industry. Parts Identification JUNIORS ONLY A picture will be provided and the contestant will be responsible for identifying 10 parts of a sheep. Quality Assurance Exercise SENIOR ONLY Demonstrate how to read a medicine label, calculate withdrawal times, complete a treatment record, and make responsible management decisions regarding quality assurance. Multiple medicine labels will be utilized. Feed Identification Identify common feeds used in the sheep industry. Juniors will identify 10 feeds
