About 2000 B.C., it began with the first new moon after the first day of spring, and the celebration of the New Year lasted 11 days. January 1 starts the New Year on solar calendars while lunar calendars vary. Romans celebrated the New Year in late March. The day for the New Year varied until Julius Caesar changed it to January 1st with the onset of the Julian calendar. It has only been in the last 400 years that western nations have been celebrating New Year s Day as a holiday. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY January 21, 2019 King was the leader of the American civil rights movement from December 1955 until his assassination in April 1968. He spoke more than 2,500 times promoting peaceful protests and action to bring about change. He was inspired by his Christian faith and Mahatma Gandhi in changing the laws and culture through nonviolence such as protests. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. His Nobel lecture, as well as his I Have a Dream speech and Letter from a Birmingham Jail are his most studied speeches and writings.
