CITY OF SAN LEANDRO invites applications for the position of: RECREATION LEADER II - Summer 2014 Recreation Program positions An Equal Opportunity Employer SALARY: Hourly $10.58 - $14.18 OPENING DATE: 02/18/14 CLOSING DATE: 03/31/14 05:00 PM THE POSITION: The recruitment will close at 5:00 p.m. on March 31, 2014 or when 150 qualified applications have been received, whichever occurs first. The City of San Leandro is accepting applications for Summer 2014 Recreation Program positions. These part-time positions are supervised by the Recreation and Human Services Department. If you enjoy working with elementary school-aged children and teens, you are encouraged to apply. Work assignments may very depending on the needs of the Department. Some positions may require working rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Part-time employees may work no more than 990 hours in a fiscal year. The San Leandro Recreation and Human Services Department is looking for individuals who are self-motivated, have a desire to lead, have experience in conflict management, can handle emergency situations, and are highly responsible. Recent experience working with children, and planning and supervising recreational activities for ages 5-10 or 11-16 is highly desired. Additionally, the ability to occasionally push and pull up to 50 pounds is required. If you possess these skills and abilities, and have an interest in working with children, we have three different programs available this summer: SUMMER ADVENTURES Summer Adventures goes on weekly field trips and offers exciting youth activities on a weekly basis. Held at Washington Manor Park, the program is designed for children ages 6Y-11Y. Leaders are required to plan, organize, and implement arts and crafts, group

games, team competitions, and provide a friendly, social environment for participants. CHABOT DAY CAMP Chabot Day Camp provides fun and exciting youth activities, singing camp songs, performing skits, family nights, field trips, arts and crafts, outdoor games, hiking, and other camping activities. Leaders will work with children ages 5Y-17Y and implement planned activities. Completion of the City of San Leandro s Counselor-in-Training Program is highly desired. TEEN PROGRAMS Our teen programs focus on providing teens ages 12Y-16Y with an environment to build friendships, social skills, self-esteem, along with fun and adventurous trips. Leaders are required to plan, organize, and implement group games, team competitions, and provide a friendly, social environment for participants. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Recreation Leader II Definition: Performs a variety of semi-skilled recreation tasks and light maintenance work in connection with the setting up of recreational facilities and special events; handles assignments of a general or specialized nature; assists various groups who are engaged in recreational activities and performs other related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: Recreation Leader II has on-site program responsibility and some direction of volunteers. Typical assignments include Lifeguard, Aquatic Instructor, Pre-school Program Aide, Day Camp Counselor, teen, youth and senior program. Supervision Exercised and Received: Recreation Leader II may exercise supervision when working with Recreation Leader I or volunteers. The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity. Leads, oversees and participates in the activities of participants in various recreation programs, events and activities; Maintains order at recreation sites; administers first aid as needed; completes incident/accident reports as appropriate;

Reports identified safety hazards; Performs building attendant and facility caretaker tasks; Ensures proper use of facilities and restores facilities to original condition upon completion of recreation function; Cleans, removes debris, and restores to prior set-up; Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to his/her supervisor; Performs required duties under the City's disaster response plan; Assembles supplies, sets up variety of equipment and markings, and sets up tables and chairs needed for various programs; Performs all related event set-ups; and Attends to minor needs and problems that may occur in the program or activity during the period of assignment; facilitates resolution or enlists assistance from senior recreation staff; Provides recommendations for special programs and events; Works with various organizations and groups in implementing assigned programs; Assures facilities and equipment are available and maintained in a safe and satisfactory fashion; Officiates, organizes, coordinates and keeps score at sports activities; Collects fees at fee-based events, programs and activities; Performs required duties under the City's disaster response plan; Instructs swimming and water safety classes and/or serves as lifeguard; Prepares post program and activity information, schedules and other reports; Shows available rental rooms/locations to potential renters;

Inspects rental locations prior to and at the conclusion of rentals; Maintains attendance, safety, and activity reports; and Maintains discipline at assigned facility; enforces rules and regulations governing assigned programs; Addresses disciplinary/behavior concerns of youth participants with parents/guardians; secures facilities at conclusion of events. n-essential Functions: balances cash drawer for fee-based programs/activities; registers/checks-in students arriving for swim lessons; maintains cleanliness and order in recreation facilities office; re-stocks promotional materials; provides phone coverage as needed; and performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for this position, the ideal candidate will possess the experience, training, education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as stated below: Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of: fundamentals and techniques of games, sports, special events, maintenance of fields and facilities and other related recreational activities; application of first-aid and lifesaving techniques; rules and regulations for adult softball and children s games and sports activities; and activities appropriate for senior citizens. Ability to: develop interest and encourage participation in assigned recreational activity; work independently and assume responsibility for a task; deal effectively and courteously with participants of various ages; communicate orally and maintain good relations with the public especially within a multi-cultural community; and keep and maintain various records. Education: Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or the legal equivalent; and courses in arts and crafts, games, aquatics, special events, children and adult sports, and other related recreation courses; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience: At least one year of experience working with children, or a combination of relevant training and experience. Licenses/certifications/other requirements: Must obtain a negative Hepatitis B and

Tuberculosis screenings; Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Red Cross standard First Aid certification; Water Safety Inspector/Lifeguard Instructor certification. Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to attend meetings and recreation events, activities and programs. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver s license. Conditions of Work: During the course of performing the functions of this position, the employee may encounter the following conditions: Working indoors, working outdoors, temperature changes, dust, fumes/smoke/gasses, chemicals, noise, computer monitor use, open flames, blood borne pathogens, working alone or with other individuals. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Salary and Benefits: The current hourly salary range for Recreation Leader II $10.58- $14.18. Employment may begin at any step of the salary range, depending upon qualifications. These are part-time positions lasting no more than six months in duration. The City's employment benefit package is not extended to this hourly part-time position.
