POLK COUNTY SHERIFF S OFFICE SHERIFF BILL McCARTHY Civilian Detention Officer Minimum Employment Qualifications COMMUNICATON: The applicant must be able to speak, understand, read, and write the English language. AGE: The applicant must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the written examination. EDUCATION: The applicant must be a high school graduate and possess a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate (GED) which meets, at least, the minimum scoring requirements by the State of Iowa as determined by the State Department of Public Instruction. WRITTEN TEST: Satisfactory performance in pre-employment cognitive written test. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Specific requirements include: 1. Vision: 20/100 each eye uncorrected 20/20 each eye corrected Normal vision Normal visual field 2. Hearing: Not greater than 25 decibels loss, as averaged, in each ear as tested at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz. 3. Physical Requirements: Successful completion of a post-offer physical examination by the Polk County physician. 4. Drug Test: Successful completion of a drug test (screen for illegal drugs). 5. Psychological: The applicant must satisfactorily complete the MMPI. PHYSICAL ABILITY: Successful completion of a physical ability test. POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION: Successful completion of a polygraph examination.
GOOD MORAL CHARACTER: Specific requirements include: 1. Conviction of a felony will disqualify an applicant. 2. Conviction of a crime of moral turpitude as defined in the Iowa Administrative Code section 5012.1 (5) may disqualify an applicant. 3. An applicant with a criminal history of repeated acts of violence may be disqualified. 4. An applicant who gives false or misleading information on the application or during the application process will be disqualified. 5. A history of using illegal drugs may disqualify the applicant: a. Use within three (3) years of the application of LSD (Acid, Micro-dots, Window Pane, etc.), Ice, Crack, Cocaine, Heroine, Methamphetamine, Opium, PCP, and/or Mescaline may disqualify the applicant. b. Use within two (2) years of the application of Marijuana, Hash Oil, Amphetamines, Barbiturates, and/or Steroids may disqualify the applicant. c. Use or experimentation with illegal drugs, other than listed above, will be evaluated. d. Use of any illegal drug or conviction of a felony or other serious offense after becoming an applicant will disqualify the applicant. 6. A person may not be hired who has a visible tattoo(s) in any area that is not covered partially by the standard short sleeve uniform, and no part of the tattoo shall be below the elbow. This includes any tattoo, scar, branding, mark, or other permanent body art or modification deliberately placed on the body for purposes of decoration, ornamentation, or adornment. The term tattoo shall not apply to medical procedures, i.e. cosmetic eyeliner, lipstick, etc. This requirement may be waived if a written agreement is made by the prospective employee that they will agree to wear the appropriate uniform or attire that provides coverage of the tattoo (example, wearing a long sleeve shirt). The Chief Jail Administrator shall determine if a tattoo is excessive and if the prospective employee will be required to keep it concealed. USE OF FORCE: The applicant is not, by reason of conscience or belief, opposed to the use of force, when necessary, to fulfill that person s duties. ORAL INTERVIEW: The applicant must perform satisfactorily in an oral interview conducted by the Polk County Sheriff s Office.
POLK COUNTY SHERIFF S OFFICE SHERIFF BILL McCARTHY CIVILIAN DETENTION OFFICER PHYSICAL ABILITY TESTING COMPONENTS Appropriate Attire Applicants must wear appropriate athletic attire to participate in the physical ability testing. We recommend sweat shirt and pants or tee shirt and shorts with tennis shoes. Jewelry such as watches, rings, bracelets, and necklaces should be left at home. Polk County is not responsible for lost or damaged personal property. How will physical ability be measured? The Physical Ability Test Battery consists of three (3) basic tests. Each test is a content valid test. The tests will be given in sequence. What are the standards? The actual performance requirement for each test is based upon norms of current employee population. The applicant must pass every test component. What are the components? 1. 400 Yard Run The applicant must run two (2) complete laps around the course. Care must be exercised on turns to avoid a fall. This component tests the applicant s aerobic fitness/endurance as it relates to those job activities which involve emergency response running. 2. Weight Drag/Figure 50 Feet Following the 400 Yard Run, the applicant will drag a 150 pound simulator from the ground by grasping the wrists of the simulator. The applicant must drag the simulator 50 feet. This component tests the applicant s ability to manipulate a weight as a simulation of job related activities which requires physical manipulation as well as endurance. Components 1 and 2 must be completed in 2 minutes and 45 seconds in order to advance to the Weight - Lift Component. Failure to complete these components in the required time will disqualify the applicant. 3. Weight Lift Component The applicant will be required to lift a 165 pound suspended simulator six inches and hold for a period of 15 seconds. Failure to complete this component will disqualify the applicant. This component tests the applicant s strength ability to lift an inmate who had attempted suicide by hanging.
