January 2013 Alumni Affairs Update Message from the Executive Director, UBC Alumni Association/AVP Alumni This has been a very busy time at Alumni Affairs as our metrics demonstrate. At the end of the third quarter, we surpassed our annual start an evolution campaign goal for alumni with points, with 37,943 alumni engaged over this fiscal year so far. Points are earned from a variety of areas of engagement including event attendance, donations, address updates, volunteering and more. Activity on the alumni website has also grown significantly in line with the overall increase in engagement. Alumni Affairs staff and the Alumni Association board have also been working hard to put the finishing touches on our new strategic plan, Alumni, Forever UBC. The first initiatives of this plan are slated to begin this month and take us through until the end of 2017. In Q3 we welcomed another 2000 alumni to the Alumni Association as Congregation was held in November. One of the most interesting developments we have seen over the past year and a half is the growing popularity of the A-Card program. We have already doubled the number of A-Cards we gave out this year compared to last year. We believe this shows that our alumni are becoming prouder than ever of their affiliation with UBC and are excited to become card-carrying members! Finally, we have just wrapped up a set of focus groups with our alumni to help us better understand some of the survey results we found last summer. We engaged The Strategic Counsel in Toronto to run these groups for us on an online platform. We will be receiving the results in the coming weeks and we look forward to using this information to help us shape our programming over the years to come. Foster the Growth and Development of UBC s Alumni Communities Regional Alumni Activity With over 6,000 alumni living in the Asia region, the Alumni Association is active in several key markets and each year host multiple events in December. On December 11, 2012 in Hong Kong we had a sold out event with the full 150 seats going in under 48 hours! Extra room was created and the room was tightly packed with 180 guests in the end but there were still over 100 alumni on the waiting list. The next alumni meeting was in Shanghai and 70 alumni came out to the Ritz Carlton for conversation, news from UBC and a piano recital by accomplished alumna Ms. Yunlin Yang MMus 94 from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. We would like to thank the volunteer emcees Matthew Spooner MA 04 and Jen Loong BCom 10, and the other volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly and even helped find a piano on 48 hours notice Sheryl Song BA, Terence Wang BA 01, MBA 09, IMBA, Annie Yu MBA 09 and Steffi Hu MBA 06. Next stop was Beijing and 49 alumni and friends enjoyed dinner at the Peninsula Hotel. Emcees Richard Liu BA 93 and Alvin Ma BCom 90 did a great job and the group enjoyed a talk on modern art in china from Gu Xiong, a UBC Professor of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory. UBC Alumni Advisory Council The new Alumni Association Board Advisory Council will hold its inaugural meeting on February 25 th 2013 on Campus. The agenda is being planned to ensure that the talents of this forty person council are best utilized through an engaging and fast-paced afternoon. President Toope will engage the council in an interactive discussion and then they will roll up their sleeves and dig into two meaty topics, one specific to UBCAA and one specific to UBC. The day will end with a social event with the UBCAA Board. UBC Alumni gathered in Beijing in December. 3

Create Access for all Alumni to a Ready Network of Peers and the UBC Learning Environment UBC Dialogues: What s the Real Cost of Cheap Food? On October 29, UBC Dialogues was presented as part of Community Day, attracting approximately 130 participants. The topic of discussion, What s the real cost of cheap food?, is an important one for the Okanagan and provided an opportunity to spotlight the agricultural and sustainability expertise of newly-installed Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal at UBC s Okanagan Campus, Deborah Buszard. Paul Kennedy, host of CBC Ideas, moderated for a second year and the reception that followed featured creations from local foods. Alumni Travel Contest The Alumni Travel contest has proven popular once again this year with over 2000 entries. Alumnus Floyd Smith BSc 72 and a companion will be enjoying a luxury musical cruise for two on the Danube in Sept. 2013 with our Study Leader, Professor Nancy Hermiston. 4
