The 3rd ETC Board of Governors meeting hosted in Amman ETC convened its 3rd Board of Governors meeting chaired by HRH Princess Sumaya Bint EL Hassan, the President of the board and the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan. The Board was honored with an intervention on Regional Integration in Water and Sanitation by HRH Prince El Hassan Bin Talal. The Meeting was held on 11 March 2014, at the Royal Scientific Society in Amman as board members reviewed progress of ETC work and discussed plans for 2014-2015.

Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Information ETC prepared 2011-2013 activities Impact Matrix report for the 28th ESCWA session. As the UN moves towards Results Based Management, ETC submitted its biannual report to the commission which shows the impact of the centre activities and how they have contributed to the achievement of the ETC objectives. ETC Objectives * To assist member countries in strengthening their capabilities to develop and manage national systems * To develop, transfer, adapt and apply technology * To determine the suitable technology for the region and facilitate its development * To improve the legal and commercial framework for the transfer of technology * To enhance the technological and scientific knowledge content of major economic sectors in member countries Activities 2011-2013 Correlation Innovation and Youth Seminar in Jordan University of Science and Technology As part the regional coordination of ESCWA with national institutions, ETC accepted an invitation from JUST to deliver a seminar on Innovation, on Tuesday Feb. 25, 2014 entrepreneurship, research and economic growth and to discuss mutual beneficial collaboration in the field. Regional workshop about the contribution of the Quadruple Helix actors to knowledge transfer within Science and Technology Parks (STPs) in Ankara, Turkey The European Investment Bank (EIB), in collaboration with the ISESCO and the UN-ESCWA Technology Centre, organized a regional workshop about the contribution of the Quadruple Helix actors to knowledge transfer within Science and Technology Parks (STPs) on 16-18 June, 2014 in Ankara, Turkey, to benefit from the successful experience of ecosystem in a regional country like turkey which has a similar cultural environment to that of the Arab countries. ESCWA submitted regional report to Global Open Access to research forum in China Based on ETC participation in 2013 international research forum in Doha, ETC submitted a report on the state of research open access in the region to the organizers of the forum in china in 25 March. 2014

Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Information "Commercialization Concepts" in collaboration with Centre for Innovation & Technology and ESA Business School, in Beirut, Lebanon. The Centre for Innovation & Technology, in collaboration with ESA Business School, organized a seminar on "Commercialization Concepts" on 6 May 2014, at ESA Business School, in Lebanon. The seminar was conducted by the ESCWA Technology Centre Innovation and Commercialization consultant for the recipients of the European Innovation voucher funding program. MENA-Education Technology Conference in Amman, Jordan Under the patronage of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan the conference was held on April 15th in Amman. ESCWA Technology Centre participated in the Panel discussion: Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Darwazah Innovation Contest at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. ETC Executive Director participated as a jury member in the 1st Student Innovation Contest in the American University of Beirut organized by the Darwazah Center for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship; the contest aims to encourage multi-disciplinary entrepreneurship activities and innovation among universities campuses in the region, and also to support business leaders in entrepreneurship for youth projects., Innovation in Research, Education and Industry Workshop organized by the World Bank and the National Council for Scientific Research NCSR in Beirut-Lebanon. The workshop took place on 6 June 2014, under the Patronage of H.E. the Minister of Industry. ESCWA Technology Centre Executive Director facilitated panel 2: Innovation in Research, Education and Industry.

Regional Integration ETC role and activities presented at the Euro Mediterranean Innovation and Horizon 2020 conference in Cairo At the Regional Launching of EU Horizon 2020, ETC participated in the session entitled Research and Innovation in Enabling and Industrial Technologies by presenting Research Potential RDI Role in the Arab Countries. The conference was attended by around 400 policy makers, researchers, representatives from academia, industry and research institutes, technology transfer centres, incubators and technology platforms from north and south Mediterranean countries. ETC participated in the Government Summit in the UAE The future of state-run services in the UAE was discussed in a three-day Government Summit, with speeches from international and regional delegates. UAE government presented the Emirates roadmap for enabling the UAE to become one the world s leading nations as smart city and digital country. ETC participated in launching the Arab Entrepreneurship Curricula with a consortium of universities in Egypt The Arab Regional Entrepreneurship Education Initiative was launched during the IAC2014 in cooperation with: Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in Egypt, Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime Transport, Nile University, ESPIRT University in Tunisia, Al Hadath for Innovation and Entrepreneurship The International Conference on Industry Academia Collaboration in Egypt ETC participated in The Technology Startup Session for projects funded by Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) in Egypt. The conference consisted of three tracks and around 95 papers were presented,, on 3-5 March 2014 ETC participated in Track 2: Innovation for Poverty Alleviation

Regional Integration First General Assembly of "FEMIA - Euro-Mediterranean Forum for Innovation in Action" in Egypt ETC participated in the first General Assembly of FEMIA "Euro-Mediterranean Forum for Innovation in Action" The 14th meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Industrial Research centers in Arab countries of the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) in Jordan ESCWA Technology Centre hosted the 14th Technical Coordination Committee Meeting of Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization-AIDMO on 2-4 June 2014, at the Royal Scientific Society, in Jordan. Reports in the fields of research on Water, Renewable Energy and Food Industry were presented by the Committee Team. Core plans of cooperation and collaboration were approved among different committee members representing Kuwait, Algeria, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan. The 3rd ETC Technical Committee Meeting at the Royal Scientific Society in Amman, Jordan ESCWA Technology Centre convened its 3rd Technical Committee Meeting in conjunction with the 14th meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Industrial Research centers in Arab countries of the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) on 3 June 2014, at the Royal Scientific Society in Jordan. The event was privileged with an intervention by His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal, the president of the Higher Council for Science and Technology and the leadership of Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, the president of the Royal Scientific Society and President of the ETC Board of Governors. The ESCWA Technology Centre work plan 2015-2014 was discussed and approved by the ETC Technical Committee. The meeting concluded with a list of recommendations and action plans to be implemented by obligor committee members in coordination with AIDMO. The Coordination Committee visited the King bdullah II Design and Development Bureau-KADDB for the purpose of exchange of expertise.

Regional Integration The 3rd Power and Desalination Summit organized by Qatar Electricity and Water Company in Doha, Qatar. This summit brought together GCC and Middle East Power and Utility Authorities, leading decision makers, master project developers, major project stakeholders, technology and solution providers involved in the master planning and development of major power and desalination plant projects across the region to discuss and debate the regional challenges. ESCWA Technology Centre Executive Director participated as a speaker in this Summit on 12-13 May 2014, in Doha, Qatar. The Regional Workshop on: Technology Foresight for ISESCO Member Countries that was organized by ISESCO and RSS in Amman, Jordan. ESCWA Technology Centre participated in the Regional Workshop on: Technology Foresight for ISESCO Member Countries organized in collaboration with the Royal Scientific Society on 15-13 May 2014, in Amman- Jordan. Participants were representatives from ISESCO member countries: Jordan, Egypt, Nigeria, Malaysia and Morocco. The regional workshop Best Practices in Supporting Green Production Sectors in the Arab Region that was organized by ESCWA and UNIDO in El Gouna, Egypt. ESCWA Technology Centre participated in this workshop, organized by ESCWA in cooperation with UNIDO, to discuss the role of the Green Help Desks (GHD) and other service providers of Green Production Sectors (Cleaner Production centers, Chambers of Commerce, and Research Institutions) present in the Arab countries and their potential as supporting mechanisms to transitioning into role Green Economy. Moreover, the participants discussed the Green Help Desk Management Guide developed by ESCWA to support the activities and operations of the GHDs.

Regional Integration The 2nd Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: Enhancing the Role of Small and Medium Enterprises in Promoting RE & EE in Hurghada, Egypt. This Forum on RE & EE intended to provide a platform for dialogue among senior policy-makers, international and regional experts in the sustainable Energy field and green economy, SMEs professional associations, RE and EE technology suppliers, financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders. Over 350 VIPs and senior-level executives convened to discuss the progress and requirements for developing smart and sustainable cities, addressing key challenges in water and energy, transport and mobility, sustainable building, ICT and intelligent urban policy. Executive Director of ESCWA Technology Centre participated as a speaker in the Panel Balance between cities growth and sustainability for the opportunity to showcase key initiatives to drive innovation, economic development and global connectedness. The forum was conducted on 7-8 April 2014 in Doha, Qatar. Premier Smart Cities Event for the Middle East Region organized by the ministry of Municipality and Urban planning in Doha, Qatar. The QITCOM ICT Summit organized by the ministry of ICT in Doha, Qatar. ESCWA Technology Centre Executive Director participated in a group discussion to share expertise in the field of innovation and commercialization at the QITCOM summit.

Advisory Services Technology Transfer and IP policy workshop for BirZeit University leadership in Amman with ipark Within the context of establishing technology transfer infrastructure in Palestinian universities, ETC organized a workshop with ipark Jordan on "IP Policy Formation" at the Royal Scientific Society, in Jordan. The workshop was attended by leadership from Birzeit University. A working visit for Libyan Ministry of Education to American University of Beirut Based on ETC STI SWOT study on16 March 2014, a partnership opportunity was identified and ETC matched the American Unive -rsity of Beirut and the MOE in Libya for the purpose of establishing new university in Tripoli, Libya. Seminar on Innovation for Egypt Universities and Research Centers ETC conducted a workshop on Establishment of Technology Transfer Offices in Egypt in cooperation with Academy of Scientific Research & Technology (ASRT), Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), and Hadath for innovation & entrepreneurship. Workshop in Yemen on Science, Technology and Innovation Observatory ETC conducted a workshop on 6 March 2014 that involved various local stakeholders to discuss the proposal of establishing a national STIO.The workshop resulted in an agreement of cooperation with ESCWA in order to prepare a detailed study for the establishment of the STIO in the Republic of Yemen. Future Science Foresight Workshop at Qatar Science Festival organizing committee. ESCWA Technology Centre Executive Director Joined the Advisory Group of the Qatar Science Festival (QSF) aiming at encouraging STEM education among young students. QSF will be held during spring 2015 and is expected to host more than 60.000 Students visiting the various exhibitions and events of the festival. QSF is selected for three consecutive years.

ESCWA Coordination Water Regional Priorities Seminar with SDPD in Jordan Given the importance of improving the institutional and human capacities for managing water resources and sanitation utilities for sustainable development of the region, on 11 March 2014 ESCWA Sustainable Development Policies Division and the Royal Scientific Society co-organized a seminar on Water and Sanitation Services in the Arab Region under the patronage and presence of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal and participation of the UN ESCWA Executive Secretary Ms. Rima Khalaf and the ETC Board of Governors. Palestinian Delegation Visit ETC Hosted delegates from number of universities in Palestine and from the USAID Palestine office Thursday 20 Feb. 2014 to discuss possible collaboration and consultation in the field of technology transfer. Palestinian from Higher Council of Competitiveness and Innovation visit Secretary General of the Higher Council of Competitiveness and Innovation visited ETC in order to explore possible partnership opportunities in the field of R&D and innovation, and posible establishment of a centre for rapid prototyping in Palestine 13 Mrach 2014. Elgazala Technopark -Tunis conduct its annual ICT competition for students Based on request from ELgazalapark Tunis, ESCWA Technology for Development Division supported the evaluation of ICT focus students competition on 26 June 2014 in Tunis.

ESCWA Coordination Regional workshop on Implementation of Rio Principle 10 in the Arab countries Co-organized with UNEP Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration ( Rio Principle 10 ) was adopted at the 1992 Rio Summit by Heads of states and governments with the goal to strengthen access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters. This workshop organized by UNEP presented a joint effort to raise awareness among countries in the Arab region on Principle 10 and the Bali Guidelines and will be followed by targeted activities to assist interested and committed countries to implement the Bali Guidelines at the national level. ESCWA Technology Centre co-organized with UNEP this workshop which was held on 13-12 May, 2014 in Amman, Jordan. Building Capacities in Developing Appropriate Green Technologies for Improving the Livelihood of Rural Communities in the ESCWA Region This project is led by the Sustainable Development Policies Division of ESCWA and will be supported by ESCWA Technology Centre to strengthen the capacity of countries in the ESCWA region to mainstream appropriate pro-poor green technology initiative into national development programme and policies, the launching of the project will be during July 2014. Co-organized with LAS the "2nd Regional Training Workshop on Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries" in Amman, Jordan. ESCWA and the League of Arab States (LAS) organized this workshop during 28-26 May 2014 in Amman, aiming to develop a better understanding of the climate change policy framework, and consider also the challenges currently faced by climate change negotiators in making progress towards new agreements, taking into account the on-going negotiations. Arab High Level Forum on Sustainable Development. The purpose of this meeting was to prepare a proposal on the objectives of sustainable development to be introduced at the sixty-eighth session Of the General Assembly in 2-4 April 2014 This event co-organiged by ESCWA Sustainable Development Policies Division, UNEP, UNDESA, Ministry of Environment of Jordan and the League of Arab States.
