Spitler Administration Building 1130 Howard Street Petoskey, MI 49770 231-348-2100 REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MINUTES Thursday, September 20, 2018 7:00 p.m. Members Present: Members Absent: Mary Ling, Keith Szajnecki, Mark Ashley, Frank Lamberti Kathy Reed CALL TO ORDER First Vice President Ling called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE First Vice President Ling led the Pledge of Allegiance. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion by Trustee Szajnecki and supported by Trustee Lamberti that the written minutes of the following meetings be approved as recorded: Regular Meeting Minutes, August 16, 2018 Closed Session Meeting Minutes, August 16, 2018

Page 2 of 5 APPROVAL OF WARRANTS Motion by Trustee Ashley and supported by Trustee Lamberti that the warrants paid, as submitted by the administration, be approved in the amount of $2,201,176.76. RESOLUTION: SET JANUARY ORGANIZATIONAL/REGULAR MEETING Motion by Trustee Ashley and supported by Trustee Lamberti that the Organizational and Regular January Meeting of the Board of Education for the Public Schools of Petoskey be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 in the Board Meeting Room of the Spitler Administration Building at 7:00 p.m. EDUCATIONAL REPORTS Mr. Prins gave an update for the elementary schools. Great start to the school year There is a Fall Classroom Collaboration o Teachers sign up for different Shared Reading Instruction Enrichment Choir started o 73 elementary students are involved All fourth graders attended Flywheelers on September 19 th All elementary schools will be going to Northmen Stadium to watch a Marching Band Performance on October 19 th. Mr. Wilcox gave an update for the middle school. Have had a smooth start NWEA has started The Fall Play has started The Middle School received a Kindness Award o It was a school wide project o Teachers volunteered their time to paint the bathroom stalls with chalk paint Positive sayings were written on the doors The sayings will be changed often Next week will start the Start with Hello project o Every day there will be a new project

Page 3 of 5 For example: Mix-it up Lunch or Hallway High Five s Dr. Stewart gave an update for the high school. Having the third counselor has been wonderful o The volume of students has been more evenly distributed o Lines are not as long as they used to be Mr. Szukala has been a great addition Freshmen were assigned mentors o Met during orientation o Will meet once a week for three weeks Homecoming week is coming up o October 19 is Homecoming/Pink Game o The Homecoming Dance is at Central Elementary on October 20 th. BOARD OF EDUCATION REPORTS PEF is getting started, nothing new to share o Mini Grants are due October 15, 2018 Trustee Szajnecki met with Mr. Prins o Toured the playground, lots of changes The Board had a work session o They would like to be more visible in all the buildings and each adopted the following buildings: Trustee Szajnecki Central Trustee Ling Lincoln Trustee Ashley Ottawa Trustee Reed Sheridan Trustee Lamberti Middle School All five will be at the High School SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Kayak for a Cause o Trustee Ling raised $2,500 paddling around Walloon Lake Helped pay for Freshmen Jump Start program This was a team effort with Dr. Scholten. He biked around Walloon Lake. Try it Tuesday s o Beth Kavanaugh received a grant for $19,000.00 from MDE to purchase local produce. November 1, 2018 is the CharEm Professional Development Day. They are asking Board members to help greet staff. Please let Dr. Scholten know if you are available to help. CS Lewis Festival o Flyers are around town o Fourth graders write a selection and have the opportunity to be published

Page 4 of 5 o The awards program will be during a school day in November Kudos to the Health Department o The Alcona workers have been very helpful to the district o Empowering Youth Grant program Building relationships for kids 8-9 hours of instruction Mindfulness Grant o Working well at Ottawa o Looking to expand this opportunity to the other elementary schools and possibly the middle school Strive program o Will kick off in October Have been reviewing and updating the Crisis Manual o Follow up Professional Development with all employees o There will be meetings in all of the schools with the Department of Public Safety o Trustee Ashley noted that high school teachers commented that it was a good training. o Trustee Lamberti noted that the staff from St. Francis was appreciative that they were invited o Great relationship with the city o Quick Flip Charts have been handed out to every employee LEGISLATIVE UPDATES HB-5707 Keep 25% Growth Evaluation, delay 40% - is currently in the Education Committee o We maintain the same growth evaluation approach and are moving ahead with the 40% Trustee Szajnecki applauded Dr. Slanec and Mrs. Smith s presentation at the Board meeting. All Board members agreed. Always good to focus on the kids. The Board is excited to see the teachers stepping up to become teacher leaders. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, it was moved by Trustee Ashley and supported by Trustee Lamberti to adjourn.
