Members and recruitment policy One of the important goals of our society is to recruit members. Membership fee is refunded to 50% (SGD 13.00) for both new and renewed members as per our policy for expansion of our chapter. This year we have maintained the number of student members up to 21. Decline in the membership is more in alumni and some of them have graduated. We expect to have more members in the coming year to have big family. SPIE Chapter Representation in Optics + Photonics 2016, San Diego, CA, USA Achyut Adhikari of Nanyang Technological University, won the runner up prize in the Interferometry Conference Fringe Art Awards category. The award was presented by conference chair Kathy Creath of Optineering. SPIE Chapter Representation in Japan Ratheesh Kumar Meleppat, a chapter member represented SPIE Singapore Student Chapter during a conference- Biophotonics Japan 2015 organized by OSA Japan on October 17, 2015.
Scholarships and Awards Indira Khadka has been awarded a 2016 Travel Scholarship by SPIE for her potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics or related field. Khadka is a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) under the guidance of Professor Sylvie Castagne and Research Scientist Wang Zhongke (SIMTech). Her research interests include laser material processing, material characterization and laser technology. Currently she is working on laser material processing of rare earth Mg alloys. She would be using the funds to present her research at Photonics West 2017. Welcome Group Dinner As a tradition of our chapter we get together and have dinner in beginning of every year. We had our annual dinner in January, 2016. This activity helped us to know each other, shared ideas, exchanged views and planed events to be conducted on coming days. Annual general meeting 2016 Annual general meeting was conducted in February 2016. Prof Asundi chaired the meeting. We elected new chapter officers and discussed possible events to be organized in the coming year. Planned events for the next part of the year Asia Student Photonics Conference, 12-14 Dec 2016, Manipal University, India Collaborator and Chapter representation Visiting Lecturer grant Photonics Student Global conference 1-3 Aug 2017, Singapore Co-organiser: SPIE Singapore Student Chapter is currently collaborating with IEEE Photonics Society and OSA Singapore Student Chapter to organize Photonics Global Student Conference (PGSC). Photonics Global Student Conference (PGSC) serves as the student international conference in the fields of Photonics for promoting worldwide communication among the young generation. Brilliant students from different countries will be invited to share their ground-breaking research and
network with each other. From organizers to attendees, all participants in this event are all young students with youthful ideas and visions of the world s future. PGSC 2017 will be conducted from 01 August to 03 August in Singapore. It will begin with a lab tour to various photonics labs on the first day. The PGSC conference session will begin on the second day. In this session, 20 invited postgraduate students from different countries will represent their nation and present their outstanding research achievement. After the presentations, there will be a networking session and the students can have an opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with each other, as well as facilitating international collaboration.
