Field Trip : A group of student members from SPIE student chapter visit the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Science Fair We participated at Miami Valley TechFest 2006 in Sinclair Community College on February 18, 2006. We had a display booth there and it included posters detailing UD s EO graduate programs and several optics-related exhibits.

General Meeting and Election We had a SPIE general meeting on March 10, 2006. In this meeting we elected new officers. In this meeting the ex-president Aziz Mahfoud gave a short talk about the chapter activities in his period of presidency. Also all the ex-officers welcomed the new officers and assured them to help them any kind of support they need. General Meeting We have another general meeting on May 16, 2006. On this day we discuss about our future activities. We have decided on this day to have an outreach in Miamisburgh High School on May 30. Also we plan to invite a speaker in fall. Outreach We performed an outreach in Miamisburgh High School on May 30, 2006. Masud and Weibin Chen gave optics presentations in the first-hour session to students in the main auditorium. The presentations were intended to give the students i nformation about our chapter and to provide them with a basic understanding o f optics and the important role it plays in our world for many applications in s cience and engineering. Masud and Chen also showed one videos that demonst rated examples of modern optical technology. At 9:30 a.m., the students were d ivided into three units and sent to one of the three presentations on an optics-re lated topic. Cijy and Lirong gave presentations on the first topic of polarizers and holograms. Georges and Adam gave presentations on the second topic of o ptical fibers and laser Communications. And Masud, Katte and Chen gave pres entations on the third topic of diffraction gratings and spectrometers. Kim coord inated the outreach. Each topical presentation included visual aids and demonstr ations to illustrate the optical principles being taught. During each presentation, students were encouraged to ask questions if a concept or description was uncle ar.

Future Plan GLPS Activity : Great Lakes Photonic Symposium (GLPS) will be held from June 12 to June 15 in Dayton. Since University of Dayton are the host this time we are planning to do some activities in this time. This will be a great opportunity for us to meet with other student chapters. Attendance at SPIE meetings : President, Mohammad Masud Siraj, vice-president Nkorni katte and Treasurer Georges Nehmetallah will attend the SPIE 51st Annual Meeting in San Diego. Wright-STEPP 2004 : The University of Dayton SPIE student chapter k-12 outreach program for 10th grade student in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory will be held on June 23, 2006.. Students will be introduced to the concept of polarization, laser, and spectroscopy on this ourtreach. Field Trip : We are planning to have a field trip in January. We have not decided the place yet. Invited Speaker : We are planning to invite a speaker from the SPIE distinguished lecturers list in end of the October.
