New apps are created everyday to do everything! What new app can you create, how will it work and what will it do? 3. If you can change the world, what will you do? When will you start? Submission Deadline: February 16, 2018 @ 8:00 PM. 3. Contestants must submit original work based on one of the following topics. 1) What do you want to become when you grow up and why? Prose - Essays: One and a half page maximum OR Short Stories: Two pages with a maximum word count of 300. Include a short thematic statement for each work of poetry or prose. WORKS WITH PROFANITY OR SEXUAL CONTENT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED 5. Instructions for completing entries : A. Submissions need to be in Word document format. PDF file preferred. B. All pages of each electronic entry must by typed on standard Letter- 8 ½ x 11 paper with 12 point font size and Times New Roman font. C. All type must be black. All prose entries should be doubled-spaced. Poetry entries may be single spaced. D. Contestants name should be typed l½ inch from the top right corner of each page. E. Cover pages not required. 6. 2018 Dr. Jean Mosee Young Writers Contest (YWC) Frequently Asked Questions Who is eligible to participate as a writer in the competition? The Dr. Jean Mosee YWC is open to both male and female students currently enrolled in Middle School (6th-8th grade) and High School (9th - 12th grade). Those under the age of eighteen will need the written permission of a parent or guardian to participate. All must submit a valid permission to publish document. Please note that there are slightly different rules and guidelines for High School students and Middle School students. Two packets have been distributed, one for High School and one for Middle School. Who will judge the competition? The Metropolitan District of Columbia Chapter of The Links, Inc. Services to Youth Facet will select judges. Submissions will be judged taking into account, among other things, creativity, clarity, originality, logical and effective organization, integrated main idea, and grammatical and structural correctness. Who owns works submitted to the competition? The student retains ownership of his/her work(s). Will there be awards for the winners? Yes, cash, tablets and other prizes will be offered to first, second and third places winners in the Middle School category (6th-8th) and in the High School category (9th-12th). What will happen to writer submissions once they are presented to the YWC? All submissions will be reviewed by Links chapter members to ensure that all literary pieces conform to the stated guidelines. Those submissions that do conform to YWC requirements will be submitted to the panel of judges who will rate the submissions. The three winning submissions from High School (9th-12th grades), and the three winning submissions from Middle School (6th-8th grade) will each earn prizes, receive a certificate of participation, and will be featured on the Metropolitan District of Columbia Chapter of The Links, Inc. website. The High School winning submissions may also have a chance of being entered in The Links Eastern Area Young Master Writers Program competition where prizes are also awarded to the top three winners. What is the timeline for submissions? For consideration, all submissions must be received by 8:00pm on Friday, February 16, 2018. Where should submissions be sent?
