ROTARY CLUB OF DULUTH 505 W. Superior Street Duluth, MN 558002 (218) 722-0451 TO: District 5580 Grants Committee December 16, 2014 Friends, we are pleased to resubmit this grant request to you. You will note that this grant includes the anticipated Mexican taxes and an improved conversion rate as the Mexican peso has devalued due to changes in the oil industry. Therefore the total project has increased from $16,000 to $17,570 and we are now requesting $7,570 from you, an increase of only $70 due to our increased partner income. We have now firm figures of our participating Duluth-Superior Rotary Clubs and have translated the contractors bid. These are the corrections you suggested. Sincerely, Daniel Bergeland Rotary Club of Duluth on behalf of the International Committee

District 5580 World Community Service (WCS) Matching Grant Application October 2014 FOR DISTRICT 5580 USE ONLY (once Grant is approved) District Grant No. 15.2.23 Date Approved: Click here to enter a date. District Grant Subcommittee Chair Signature: District Rotary Foundation Chair Signature: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: A project already started will not be eligible for World Community Service funds. The Rotary Club of Duluth developed a program to develop a strong relationship with a Rotary Club of Mexico. For about 18 years Club 25 and the Merida Nuevas Generationes Rotary Club have enjoyed a strong relationship, with many visits of both parties, exchange students have participated the the Rotary Student exchange program from both club. About fifteen years ago the Merida Nuevas Generationes Club requested that we join them in a project to help update the Casa de la Proteccion de la Joven (House of Protection for Young Women) This old 300 year hacienda, a large two story building in the center of Merida, population about 1,000,000 is a secure living facility for about 65 young women from throughout Mexico, but principally from the State of Yucatan. Most of them come from small Mayan villages to continue their education, some to finish high school and most to enter universities. They are allowed to stay there as long as they meet behavioral and academic standards. Over the last fifteen years the two clubs have: - Rewired the entire house to meet current standards, enabling internet connections and safety. - Provided wardrobes for each girl, as they had no closets. - Updated a very old kitchen with modern stainless steel appliances. - Replace chairs and tables for the facility. - When hit by a hurricane we replaced the roof and windows, which were severely damaged. - Installed two commercial size washing machines so the girls did not need to use a scrub board. NOW FOR THE CAPSTONE PROJECT, FOR WHICH DISTRICT FUNDING IS REQUESTED, OF $ 7,570.00, A BUILDING PROJECT TO REDO THE DECREPIT BATHROOMS WE BELIEVE THIS HOUSING PROJECT QUALIFIES FOR MATCHING DISTRICT WCS FUNDS When we have visited the facility over the past years we have felt embarrassed to see the quality of the bathroom facilities. These 65 women have no privacy, for essential bodily needs. Toilets

are in terrible shape and some of the wash basins leak. The showers have no privacy for the women. Therefore, our two clubs have agreed to rectify this situation by providing modern bathrooms, which can be kept clean, reducing possible transmission of illness when a girl is sick, have the privacy we all would want and have efficient water saving fixtures. The Merida Nuevas Generationes has received an estimate that the project will cost $17,570 in US dollars, including Mexican taxes of 16% and using current conversion rates of $1 US to 14.25 pesos. Please provide the name of the project site, the city or village, state or province, and country. Project Site: The Casa de la Protecccion is at Calle 50 & Calle 63 # 453, in central Merida. City/Village: Merida State/Province: Yucatan Country:Mexico Provide name of ownership of property that structure on which structure is to be built. Non-profit: Association for the Casa de Proteccion de la Joven, governed by a board of directors. Provide the estimated length of time needed to complete the project. One month Describe how the benefiting community will maintain this structure or project (financing of maintenance, etc.) after grant funding has been fully expended and who will be responsible for sustainability of the structure. The Casa de la Proteccion de la Joven is governed by a board of directors. They are responsible for the staffing of the the house, the budget and maintenance of the facility. Our Rotary Club has visited the home many times and are impressed with the cleanliness and maintenance of this very old but substantial building. They have lacked funds to make major improvements which it has been our pleasure to be of assistance, at the recommendation of the Nuevas Generationes Rotary Club. Describe specific activities of the Host and International Partners in implementing the project. The result of many visits to this site by members of the Rotary Club of Duluth has convinced us of the right to dignity for these women as they meet elemental needs of their lives. The Merida Nuevas Generationes Rotary Club recommended this project and has received a secure and sound construction contract and oversee the project. A group of Club 25 Rotarians will visit Merida on February 21-25, 2015, and will inspect the work that is completed to date, hopefully complete. What will the Rotarians who are members of the partner clubs do during the project? Please note that financial support is not considered active involvement. (Refer to Matching Grant Application Instructions for suggestions.) Officers, the project committee and other members of the Nuevas Generationes Rotary Club will make periodic visits to the house to assure that the project is being implemented in accordance with the plan and that all fixtures are of the quality stated in the project proposal and architectural drawings. They will pay the contractor according to the contract.
