Bartlesville Public School District s The Bruin Weekly Email Newsletter Volume 5, Number 25...Friday, Feb. 4, 2011...www.bps-ok.org Snow is being removed at sites throughout the Bartlesville Public School District in the wake of a storm which dumped several inches of snow and ice on the area earlier this week. Wintry weather puts school days on ice Snow storm causes classes to be cancelled from Tuesday through Friday throughout BPSD Winter storms wrecked havoc throughout the state this week, and Bartlesville was no exception. The area received an estimated foot of snow in the wee hours of Tuesday and throughout the rest of the day. Virtually everything was affected by Mother Nature s wrath, including classes throughout the Bartlesville Public School District, which were canceled from Tuesday through Friday. During the current 2010-11 academic year, the BPSD has now lost six school days due to inclement weather. SNOW - Continued to Page 2 Options available for opting in for BPSD text messages The Bartlesville Public School District has sent out several text messages so far through its new SchoolMessenger communication system. The first one a test message was sent out on Jan. 5 and another followed on the evening of Jan. 10 to relay the message that classes would be cancelled on Jan. 11 throughout the BPSD due to inclement weather. Since then, more text communications have been issued by the district in regards to weather-related school closings. Some who have opted in for the BPSD s text message service which is offered free of charge still are not receiving the text messages. If that is the case, please email your name and corresponding cell phone number (to which you would like the text messages sent) to AustinDK@bpsok.org and you will be signed up for the service. Those who are just now deciding to opt in may do the same and they ll be signed up. Please note that while the BPSD charges nothing for the service, some fees may be incurred depending on the particular cell phone plans of the users.

BHS parent information meetings rescheduled for Monday Open library nights slated for later this month at B ville High, Mid-High as well Bartlesville High School has rescheduled a pair of parent information meetings. Originally set for Feb. 3 on day on which classes were cancelled throughout the Bartlesville Public School District due to inclement weather the meetings are now slated for Monday, Feb. 7. The meetings, which are for parents and guardians of students who will be juniors and seniors at BHS during the upcoming 2011-12 academic year, will take place in the Fine Arts Center auditorium on the BHS campus. The gatherings, both of which will offer the same information, will be offered at noon and 6 p.m. to accommodate various schedules. All parents and guardians of students who will be at BHS during the 2011-12 academic year are encouraged to attend. The meetings will feature BHS administrators and counselors and will focus on topics such as curriculum, college entrance requirements and procedures for online enrollment. Parents and guardians will be able to ask questions of the administrators and counselors as well. Those with questions concerning the BHS parent information meetings can call 336-3311 (ext. 5045). On Monday, Feb. 7 as well as Thursday, Feb. 10 from 5-7 p.m. each evening BHS will play host to open library nights at the BHS Library/Media Center. During that time, parents and guardians will have the opportunity to learn more about online enrollment for students at the school as they head into the 2011-12 academic year. As is the case with the parent information meetings, two open library nights have been scheduled to accommodate various schedules. BHS counselors and administrators will be on hand at each event. The Bartlesville Mid-High School will play host to an open library night for the parents and guardians of incoming freshmen and sophomores to the school in its library on Thursday, Feb. 17 from 5-7 p.m. Mid-High School administrators and counselors will be on hand for the event. Everyone invited to enjoy bingo game night Saturday to benefit BHS soccer The Bartlesville High School soccer program is set to play host to a bingo game night fundraising event on Saturday at the American Legion Post 105 in Bartlesville. The fundraising event, which will see all proceeds raised put back into the soccer program, is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 in advance and $12 at the door on the evening of the event. The American Legion Post 105 is located at 501 NE Washington Blvd. Those who would like more information about the bingo game night fundraising event for the BHS soccer program can contact Laura Walton via phone at 336-5619. SNOW - Continued from Page 1 Five inclement weather days were built into the district s calendar for the 2010-11 academic year, meaning one day will now have to be made up. As it currently stands, the last day of school is scheduled for Monday, May 23 with a professional in-service day for BPSD educators slated for Tuesday, May 24. The district s calendar committee will make a recommendation as to how the day will be made up and possibly days depending on how the weather plays out and that plan will eventually be brought before the Bartlesville Board of Education for its approval. Once the plan is finalized, it will be made public. In addition to the BPSD, school districts throughout the area and state were forced to cancel classes for much of this week due to inclement weather. While the BPSD lost four days of school this week Tuesday through Friday due to Mother Nature, it lost two days last month.
