Shafer spent the past 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, serving the last two seasons as the associate head coach. He helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and four Southeastern Conference championships, three regular-season titles and one tournament title. During his tenure, Georgia posted a 273-85 (.762) record and advanced to three NCAA Final Fours, appearing in the 1996 championship game. A proven recruiter, he helped Georgia head coach Andy Landers sign five Top 10 freshmen classes and inked the country s fifth best class last year. Shafer has signed five high school All-Americans while serving the past three years as the Lady Bulldogs recruiting coordinator. Coach Shafer has demonstrated superior leadership skills at a national championship level women s basketball program for the past eleven years. The things I admire most about Coach Shafer are his family values and his honesty. He is such a loving husband and father and he has brought that same mentality to our team. I remember everything he said the first time I met him and he has followed through with it all. He has shown so much dedication to this program and to us as individuals. A 1994 graduate of William & Mary, Shafer earned a spot on the men s basketball team as a walk-on. He served as team co-captain in 1994 and served on the Student-Athletic Council during his senior season. The Athens, Ga. native received a bachelor s degree in business administration from William & Mary and earned his master s degree in sports management from Georgia in 1997. Being a former Spider, I take a great deal of pride in our women s basketball program. It s extremely exciting to have someone of Coach Shafer s stature take over our basketball program. After being an instrumental part of Georgia s success for the past 11 years as a perennial Top 10 powerhouse in women s basketball, Coach Shafer certainly knows what it takes to win on the national level. I believe his success as a coach and a recruiter will prove to be invaluable in taking over an experienced women s basketball program that is on the verge of greatness. He is a great fit for our basketball program in every aspect and we are very fortunate to have someone of his caliber lead us to new heights. We are all excited that he is here at Richmond. High School: Athens Christian Education: Georgia 90 www.richmondspiders.com ASSISTANT COACH 46 Chris Carroll enters his first year as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond after spending the last four years as the recruiting coordinator at Liberty University. In each of his four years at Liberty, Carroll helped guide the Lady Flames to a Big South Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In his final season, Liberty became just the second 13th-seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16 with wins over fourth-seed Penn State and fifth-seed DePaul. Chris has proven to be a very good on-the-floor coach over the years. His ability to teach the game to our players will be beneficial to our team s success. He has also been a very successful recruiter. He can relate to recruits and parents alike. Having come from a successful program at Liberty, we expect him to bring a winning attitude to Richmond basketball. Coach Shafer In addition to his role as recruiting coordinator, Carroll s responsibilities included on-court coaching during contests, scouting opponents and running practices. Prior to his time in Lynchburg, Carroll spent three years at both Wyoming and Southern Mississippi, serving as the recruiting coordinator at both schools. In addition, he was named the associate head coach at Southern Mississippi. The three-time NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Region XVII Coach of the Year posted an 86-14 mark with the Danes. In addition, Truett- Coach Carroll and wife, Leigh and sons, Will and Jack join the Spiders from Lynchburg. McConnell finished among the NJCAA Top 10 in each of Carroll s years and he received three consecutive Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year honors. Carroll played three years of college basketball, competing at Emmanuel Junior College for two years and then at Tennessee Temple University. During his sophomore season at Emmanuel, he received the Scholar-Athlete Award. Carroll earned his associate s degree in business from Emmanuel in 1988 and two years later, received a bachelor s degree in Health and Physical Education from Georgia. In 1992, he completed postgraduate work at North Georgia College and State University, earning his masters in health and physical education. The Pascagoula, Miss. native and his wife Leigh are the parents of two sons, six-year old Will and one-year old Jack. Coach Carroll is a great addition to our program because he understands how to get us to where we want to go (a bigtime, acknowledgeable program). After spending some of the summer around him, his competitive nature is evident on the court, while his sarcasm and sense of humor makes for a warm environment off of the court. ASSISTANT COACH GINNY DOYLE THE GINNY DOYLE FILE Hometown: Philadelphia, Pa. High School: Archbishop Ryan Education: Richmond `92 Ginny Doyle, a former Richmond basketball standout, returns for her sixth season on the Spiders staff. During her tenure at Richmond, she has helped guide the Spiders to four winning seasons (three consecutive) and an at-large berth to the 2005 NCAA Tournament, in addition to helping the Spiders post an overall mark of 109-73 and make three straight national post-season appearances. Ginny s love for Richmond is unmatched. When she speaks of her time here, it is genuine and heartfelt. Our players, recruits and parents can sense that. Ginny has had a good deal of success in recruiting, but she is also very knowledgeable of the game. She does a tremendous job of teaching our players the fundamentals and concepts of the game. Her work ethic is one of the strongest that I have been around. We were fortunate to keep Ginny at Richmond. Coach Shafer Aside from her coaching duties, Doyle also deals with recruiting and scouting. She approaches these roles with the same passion and work ethic that she displayed in the early 1990s as a starting guard for the Spiders. I walk into the Robins Center, look at those two banners and remember how special winning those two titles were, she recalls. I hope that every one of our players gets to experience being a part of the NCAA Tournament. It s unbelievably special and something that no one can ever take away from you. Doyle played two years at Richmond after transferring from George Washington and played a key role in leading Richmond to the 1991 CAA Championship, earning allconference honors both seasons. Doyle is the program s all-time leader in career free throw percentage and holds the NCAA Division I record for consecutive free throws made, connecting on 66 straight attempts. She will always be remembered for defeating basketball analyst Billy Packer in a free throw shooting contest at the Robins Center. Doyle graduated from Richmond in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in health. Doyle is single and resides in Richmond, Va. ASSISTANT COACH CANDICE JACKSON THE CANDICE JACKSON FILE Education: Michigan State 04 www.richmondspiders.com ASSISTANT COACH Candice Jackson enters her first year as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond after spending last season as a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State, her alma mater, where she helped lead the Spartans to the 2005 NCAA National Championship game. Candice comes from a successful program at Michigan State where she both played and coached. Her ability to relate to our players and recruits is very important. She also has a broad understanding of what it takes to build a successful program as she was a part of Michigan State s rise. That experience will be invaluable to Richmond as we take the next step forward. Coach Shafer Working under Joanne P. McCallie, the 2005 Associated Press Coach of the Year, Jackson s primary responsibility at Michigan State was player development. In addition, she assisted with scheduling, on-campus recruiting, film exchange and coaching the post players. COACHING EXPERIENCE University of Richmond - Assistant Coach (2005-present) Michigan State Graduate Assistant Coach (2004-2005) PLAYING EXPERIENCE Michigan State - 2000-2004 Coach Jackson enters her first year with the Spiders after working at Michigan State last year. Despite an injury-plagued career, including three knee injuries, Jackson played in 55 games during her four years with the Spartans. She connected on 31 three-point baskets while averaging 4.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. She scored a career-best 26 points, going 10-13 from the field as a freshman against Chicago State. Jackson earned her bachelor s degree in family community services from Michigan State University in 2004. The Lansing, Mich. native was a three-time team MVP at Lansing Everett High School and led her squad to the 1999 Class A State Championship game. As a senior, she averaged 11.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists and earned All- State Fourth-Team honors. Coach Jackson emphasizes leadership and hard work on the court and, as players, we re responding to her demands. She has helped me to realize where I need to strengthen my skills as a senior leader. A 2004 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman s College, Brooks was a basketball standout and starting goalkeeper for the WildCats women s soccer team all four years. She is a member of the 1,000 point club and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors her senior year. She is currently earning her master s degree in sports leadership at VCU. Amy recently married Lane Brooks in a June 25, 2005 wedding. Amy is an invaluable member of our staff. She seldom is in the forefront, but we would be in disarray if we didn t have her on our staff. Amy handles all aspects of our day-to-day activities. She is extremely dedicated and committed to the success of Richmond basketball. I believe Amy has a great future in this game. University of Richmond Director of Athletics Jim Miller announced the creation of the student-athlete family coordinator and has appointed Allison Vogler to the position. The position will give parents and relatives of the department s more than 400 studentathletes a point-person with whom they can initiate communications on issues that impact them. We want our families to know we care about them and their children and they have a place to turn within the department to get their questions answered, said Miller. Our parents have trusted us to provide the best possible college experience for their son or daughter during a significant four or five year span of their life, and we believe the family relationship is an important part of making that experience a success. What started as an eight-school, men s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14- university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10. The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph s University, Temple University and Xavier University have formed the foundation of the Atlantic 10 - a foundation which is further strengthened this season with the additions of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Saint Louis University. In 2005-06, the Atlantic 10 Conference celebrates its 30th anniversary season. Although anniversaries are a good time to reflect, this anniversary is a celebration of the future as much as it is of the past. It is with pride that we look back at our accomplishments and see how far this league has truly come, says A-10 commissioner Linda Bruno, who begins her 12th season at the helm of the league - the longest tenure of any commissioner in the Conference s history. More importantly, however, the additions of Charlotte and Saint Louis ensure that the future is brighter than it has ever been. We are adding two members who will greatly enhance the national profile of all our sports and expose our programs to two new markets in which our universities actively recruit. The A-10 has never been as strong as it is now. The Atlantic 10 Conference, which spans eight states and the District of Columbia with a total population of almost 73 million people, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, field hockey, men s golf, women s lacrosse, men s and women s indoor and outdoor track & field, women s rowing, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s swimming & diving, men s and women s tennis and women s volleyball. 2004-05 REVIEW George Washington won its first-ever men s basketball title and represented the Atlantic 10 in the NCAA Tournament. Saint Joseph s and Temple also earned postseason bids with the Hawks reaching the final of the National Invitation Tournament. In women s basketball, the A-10 sent four teams to the postseason as Temple earned the automatic bid by winning its second consecutive Atlantic 10 championship. The Owls were joined by George Washington and Richmond, marking the 11th time in the last 12 years that the A-10 has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament. Xavier also garnered a postseason berth and advanced to the third round of the WNIT. Rhode Island won its first-ever A-10 baseball championship and earned its first NCAA berth; in field hockey, Richmond, which was ranked as high as 10th nationally, went unbeaten in Conference play for the third straight year in advancing to the NCAAs; Xavier took the league s automatic berth to the NCAA Men s Golf Tournament, where it was joined by Rhode Island; and Richmond won its first A-10 lacrosse title and the bid to the NCAAs. The Massachusetts women s rowing team won its 10th straight A-10 title, setting a league record for the most consecutive tournament championships won by any team in any sport. UMass also won the ECAC title; George Washington advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men s Soccer Tournament; Dayton lost in overtime in its NCAA women s soccer opener; Massachusetts won its 17th A-10 softball title to advance to the NCAAs; Richmond represented the A-10 in the NCAA men s and women s tennis tournaments; and Dayton won the Conference s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. In all, 374 teams have represented the 50

Atlantic 10 Conference in postseason play since the 1976-77 season. INDIVIDUAL ATHLETIC HONORS KJ Kelley of Massachusetts was named a First-Team softball All-American by Easton Sports; swimmer Brooke Boncher of Richmond claimed All-America honors in the 100-yard butterfly; Richmond s Allie Howard (Second-Team) and Holly Cram (Third-Team) earned All-America honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association; Duquesne s Ginger Flocco garnered Second-Team All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse and GW s Laura Hostetler earned Third-Team acclaim; Rhode Island s Sasha Gotsmanov, the A-10 men s soccer Offensive Player of the Year, and Dayton s Chris Rolfe were named Second-Team All-Americans by NSCCA/ adidas, while Kevin Coleman of La Salle earned Third-Team honors; A-10 baseball Player of the Year Brad Rosenblat of George Washington and Pitcher of the Year Matt Torra of UMass were named Third-Team All-Americans by Louisville Slugger, while Fordham s Cory Riordan was named to its freshman All-America team; A-10 men s basketball Co-Players of the Year Pat Carroll of Saint Joseph s and La Salle s Steven Smith and women s basketball Player of the Year Candice Dupree of Temple earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades from the Associated Press; Lea Jakobsen of Massachusetts was named a Second-Team All-American by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association; Jen Simonetti of Dayton garnered Third-Team All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association; and Dayton s Faye Barhorst and Christy Utnage were named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Additionally, Richmond s Brooke Boncher and Katura Horton-Perincheif of George Washington competed at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship; La Salle s Sean Quigley ran the 10,000 meters and Richmond s Lindsey Smith competed in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. ACADEMIC HONORS Atlantic 10 student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. Each A-10 institution ranked at or above the national average for graduation rates, according to the NCAA Official 2004 Division I Graduation Rates Report. The Atlantic 10 sponsors several academic awards programs, including Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and the Commissioner s Honor Roll, which honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better semester grade point average. The league also cites a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and awards four postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who express a desire to continue their education. Several Atlantic 10 student-athletes earned Academic All-America recognition in 2004-05. First-Team honorees include Ryan Bender (men s cross country/track) of Duquesne. Second-team recipients include Noah Salsi (men s soccer) of Duquesne; Jon Korhonen (men s track & field) of Massachusetts; Rhode Island s Melanie Kasparek (women s soccer); Laurie Stone (softball) of St. Bonaventure; Saint Joseph s Cara Deldeo (softball); Colleen McCroskey (women s rowing) and Sarah Fetterman (women s cross country/track) of Duquesne; and Rob Altenau (men s tennis) of Dayton. Those receiving third-team acclaim are Steve Maiolo (baseball) of Duquesne; Dayton s Tye Stebbins (men s soccer); Kim Dodson (softball) of St. Bonaventure; and Xavier s Kate Duchek (women s volleyball). ATLANTIC 10 HISTORY The genesis of this tradition of success can be traced to March 2, 1975, when eight university representatives met in Harrisburg, PA, to discuss the formation of a new collegiate basketball association. A similar meeting was also held on May 23 of that year, with the final formation of the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League announced on August 13, 1975. The NCAA granted allied affiliation status upon the ECBL on October 15, 1975, and granted the league an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on June 17, 1976. The ECBL began operation at the start of the 1976-77 season with Duquesne, George Washington, Massachusetts, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Villanova, and West Virginia as its charter members. Several changes happened quickly in the ECBL, the first coming in 1977-78 when the league changed its name to the Eastern Athletic Association - better known as the Eastern 8 - to reflect its changing mission. That year, the Eastern 8 became more than a basketball league as the men s sports of baseball, cross country, golf, swimming, and tennis were added to the championship schedule. The next major change came in 1981 when the office of the commissioner was instituted. Leland Byrd, who had served as president and executive director of the league since its inception, as well as athletic director at West Virginia, was named the Conference s first commissioner and established the commissioner s office in Pittsburgh. Byrd guided the Eastern 8 through several membership changes as Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph s, and Temple replaced Pittsburgh and Villanova. After membership stabilized, the Eastern 8 transformed into the Atlantic 10 Conference with Byrd orchestrating the drive to make the league more broad-based as the women s sports of basketball, gymnastics, softball, tennis, and volleyball were added to the championship slate. In May 1984, Byrd resigned as commissioner and was replaced by Charlie Theokas, who remained at the Atlantic 10 for 15 and a half months, bringing the league to national consciousness with his Think Atlantic 10 campaign. On December 31, 1985, Theokas resigned to accept the athletic director s position at Temple and was replaced by Ron Bertovich, who officially assumed the commissioner s position in May 1986 after serving as interim commissioner following Theokas departure. In eight years as commissioner, Bertovich expanded the Conference staff to better meet the growing needs of the membership and established the Atlantic 10 Television Network, which has developed into a major regional outlet and has won three Emmy Awards. In addition, he oversaw further membership changes as Xavier was added to the league while Penn State, Rutgers, and West Virginia departed. Furthermore, he continued the league s emphasis on broad-based programs as the Atlantic 10 expanded its championship list with the additions of women s cross country, field hockey, men s and women s soccer, women s swimming & diving, and men s and women s indoor track & field, as well as the reinstitution of men s swimming & diving. On April 13, 1994, Bertovich resigned his position to accept the job of vice president and general manager of Empire Sports Network in Buffalo. On June 14, 1994, Linda Bruno was officially introduced as the Atlantic 10 s fourth commissioner. As commissioner, Bruno has strengthened the Atlantic 10 s membership with the additions of Charlotte, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle, Richmond, and Saint Louis. She also negotiated television deals with ESPN and was among the first to sign a contract with College Sports Television, which provides greater exposure for the Atlantic 10 s athletic programs. Under her leadership, the Atlantic 10 has increased its championship schedule to 21 sports with the additions of women s rowing, men s and women s outdoor track & field, and women s lacrosse. In 1997, Bruno also spearheaded the league s entrance into Division I football with the formation of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference, which has won three national titles in its eight-year existence. In addition, in an effort to recognize the athletic and academic achievements of all student-athletes, Bruno instituted the Commissioner s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 gpa or better.
