The UBS Optimus Foundation is dedicated to improving the health, safety and standard of living for children around the world. Your support can help advance those goals. A message from Bob McCann... In today s turbulent world, too many children face enormous impediments to happiness and success. War, abject poverty, lack of access to education and appropriate care the contributing factors are myriad, but their effects are the same: depriving today s youth of the chance to grow up in environments that are safe and nurturing. The UBS Optimus Foundation is committed to showing children that our world is also full of people who care, and your charitable giving can play a big part. UBS clients have the unique opportunity to join the UBS Optimus Foundation s efforts to have a positive impact on the lives of children here in the United States and around the world. By aligning your philanthropic giving with our work, you can help us to protect and lift up the next generation. When you give to the UBS Optimus Foundation, your entire donation will be matched 100 percent by the UBS Optimus Foundation and all administrative costs are covered by UBS. That means every dollar you choose to donate will be turned into $2 for children in need, and 100 percent of those funds will go directly to the efforts described in the enclosed materials. This year s campaign will support the work of three innovative organizations, each of which addresses specific, distinct challenges that prevent children from reaching their full potential. I ve had the opportunity to learn more about these nonprofits and I ve been impressed with the way they re delivering tangible solutions that make a difference for children in need. I hope you ll take a moment to look through this package and learn more. Many people I talk to are focused on improving the world around them and creating a proud legacy. I share those ambitions, and personally, helping to unlock opportunity for children is something in which I deeply believe. It s why I m pleased to both serve on the Board and support the work of the UBS Optimus Foundation. Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider joining our efforts in 2018. Robert J. McCann Chairman UBS Americas Member of the Board of Directors, UBS Optimus Foundation To discuss this opportunity or any of UBS s philanthropic services, please contact your Financial Advisor directly. You can fund a smarter approach to help refugee children Help refugee families by giving them cash to spend as they see fit whether that means investing in nutrition and health, education, small businesses, or all of the above. Program overview Partner organization: GiveDirectly Target group: 28,000 people including 17,900 children Location: Uganda Why should you support GiveDirectly? GiveDirectly is a non-profit organization with a proven track record in delivering unconditional cash transfers to extremely poor families in Africa. It has been recommended by non-profit evaluator GiveWell for six years running, and received the inaugural Google Global Impact Award. GiveDirectly has many benefits: Sending cash is more cost-effective than sending various forms of aid like food, water, seeds so your money goes further. It offers families flexibility and efficiency by cutting out intermediaries and allowing them to purchase exactly what they need. Studies show proven beneficial impacts on income, savings, health and more. Digital technologies allow for a highly transparent, direct process that minimizes risk of waste and maximizes cash delivered. Substantial cash transfers are a one-off and provide the potential to reduce costly longterm aid cycles families meet their needs and invest in their own futures. Evidence has shown that giving cash directly has a lasting, positive impact. 1 Studies also show that families don t spend cash transfers on alcohol, tobacco or other temptation goods. 1 givedirectly.org/research-on-cash-transfers#cite3 How it works: 1) Target We locate extremely poor families using public data and send staff door-to-door to enroll families. 2) Audit We use independent checks to prevent bribery and ensure money goes to those who need it. 3) Transfer Money is transferred electronically typically, recipients receive an SMS and collect cash from a mobile money agent. 4) Monitor Each recipient receives a call to verify receipt of funds, and staff often follow up in person.

Photography courtesy of GiveDirectly Why your investment is needed GiveDirectly is seeking funding to expand its proven method of delivering aid into a new area: helping refugee families in Uganda, home to one of the largest and poorest refugee populations in the world. Your support will directly help families who have lost everything to purchase what they need to feed their children and rebuild their lives. Cash travels fast, has no shipping cost, and gives refugees the chance to regain control and choice over their spending and livelihoods. Your support will also help invigorate the local economy, as refugees use their cash transfers to purchase food and supplies from local shops. You will also help to provide proof-of-concept to show that sending large cash transfers can work in a refugee context which can then be scaled up. There is growing evidence that giving cash directly is cost-effective and sustainable. Your gift could help bring this model into a new setting helping refugee families rebuild their lives. You ll support an approach with a proven track record Independent research has shown that cash transfers are a cost-effective way to deliver developmental results including economic development, improved health and nutrition, school attendance and psychological well-being. Results from cash transfer studies: 15% reduction in incidence of low birth birth weight in certain contexts.2 Five years after male entrepreneurs were given $100 to $200, they earned $8 to $12 in additional profits every month (64-96% rates of return).3 0% effect on alcohol or tobacco spend.4 The impact you can have Your support will help expand GiveDirectly s work to help refugee families in Uganda and establish proof of concept. Show that using cash transfers is an effective way of helping refugees. Directly enable families to prioritize resources as they see fit in order to keep their families healthy, fed and educated. A gift of $25,000 pays for cash transfers for 21 refugee families to prioritize as they see fit* A gift of $100,000 pays for cash transfers for 86 refugee families to prioritize as they see fit* 2 Amarante et al, 2011, 3 de Mel et al, 2008, 4 World Bank, 2014 *Statistics courtesy of GiveDirectly

Can technology solve Africa s education crisis? Support Africa s first education incubator and encourage the continent s own technological entrepreneurs to help improve education across Africa. Program overview Partner organization: Injini Target group: Schoolchildren, adult learners and teachers Location: South Africa and Africa-wide Why should you support Injini? Injini is tackling the problem of education across Africa in a new way by focusing on small businesses with the ingenuity and energy to harness the power of technology to help children learn. Supporting small businesses is a sustainable alternative to non-profit intervention. Business as usual in African education isn t working this is an innovative approach. Education forms the basis of Africa s future development and local education innovations have significant potential if given the right support. Mobile technology is widespread across the continent and thus far has been under-utilized in solving Africa s education problems. There is significant potential in the resourcefulness of entrepreneurs across the continent. Most of the best ideas fail because they lack both the funding needed to develop their product and get it to market, and the business and technology expertise to allow their business to grow. Injini aims to ensure that ideas that can raise education standards at scale have access to early stage investment and support. The Injini approach AFRICA LEADS, NOT FOLLOWS The greatest challenge and opportunity in EdTech lies in Africa, so the best innovations will be produced here. EMPOWER TEACHERS, NOT REPLACE THEM Help teachers deepen and widen their impact, not try to make them obsolete. GRASSROOTS IDEAS, GLOBAL IMPACT It will be teachers and entrepreneurs not big bureaucracies who realize technology s potential in education. AGNOSTIC ON METHODS, RELIGIOUS ON RESULTS Embrace new ideas, but firmly discard what does not work.

Photography courtesy of Injini How it works Your support helps get exciting education innovations to market so they can start benefiting students across Africa, and helps start-ups get their business off the ground. Injini accepts applications from small start-up companies from anywhere in Africa with an education technology innovation that has the potential to improve education at scale. Every six months, a cohort of successful companies receive a substantial financial investment along with a five-month incubation period where they receive expert advice on everything from the technological development of their product to the capacitybuilding needed to help their business grow. Successful innovations then continue to help raise education standards for children across the continent. The scale of the education crisis in Africa demands an entirely new approach this program does just that. Your support will help fund solutions devised by local people, revolutionizing access to education resources for children across Africa. The impact you can have Your support can help fund an entirely new way of tackling the education crisis across Africa. Investing time, expertise and money into small businesses is a sustainable way of getting education resources to children in the long term, as businesses continue to provide resources after the initial investment period. Only start-ups whose innovations have a strong basis in existing evidence are selected, ensuring your money has the greatest possible impact for children across Africa. This program marks an entirely new way of tackling problems in education your support can help provide evidence for success and leverage further funding. You could support start-ups like M-Shule, which is helping primary students in Kenya to access lessons through their mobile phones, or Yo Books in South Sudan, which aims to provide access to books in remote regions. A gift of $25,000 can fund a school of 2,143 students to learn for one year in one of Injini s programs like M-Shule* A gift of $128,000 would fund the participation of two companies in the Injini program* *Statistics courtesy of Injini

Inspire the next generation of US innovators Give US students from low-income families the 21st century Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education to propel them into promising careers. Program overview Partner organization: KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Target group: Children aged between four and 11 Location: US-wide Why should you support KIPP? KIPP schools offer a trajectory-changing education for students from low-income communities. With a proven model that has been refined over 25 years and emulated by educators across the country, KIPP schools prove that demographics and geography are not destiny. KIPP is a network of 224 schools offering free education to nearly 100,000 early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students. KIPP schools educate children from low-income households, 89% are entitled to free and reduced-price school meals. Highly trained KIPP teachers tailor instruction to meet individual students needs. New robust STEM programs engage children from as early as kindergarten, setting them up to thrive in the new economy. Students from low-income communities could go on to change their lives by pursuing rewarding careers in STEM. The US economy may benefit from more STEM graduates and a more diverse workforce. How it works Engaging children early Studies show that the STEM gap begins as soon as children enter school, and by high school it can be too late. Your support could reach 40,000 children nationwide to prevent the STEM gap before it even starts. Hands-on discovery The science curriculum, Amplify Science, invites students to explore phenomena by solving authentic real-world problems. Students will develop the skills necessary to tackle today s global challenges. Looking to the future Innovative Design, Computer Science, and Engineering (DCE) courses, including robotics and coding, will potentially increase the number of minority and low-income students entering STEM careers.

Photography courtesy of KIPP Why your investment is needed Not enough US students, especially those from low-income communities, are gaining skills in STEM subjects. This denies them the chance to pursue rewarding careers and denies our country of their talents and perspectives. By 2020, there will be an estimated 1 million more information technology jobs than applicants who can fill them.1 Only 30% of US eighth graders show proficiency in mathematics and science.2 The impact you ll have Your support will help to create the next generation of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and researchers, and keep our country at the cutting edge of innovation. You ll help to increase the number of low-income students entering into STEM careers. Your support will potentially help to prepare the next generation of leaders needed to solve the world s most challenging problems. You ll support a program with a proven track record and immense reach KIPP began in 1994 in Houston, Texas, by two teachers who were frustrated by how education was failing children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Today, 224 KIPP schools educate nearly 100,000 students.3 67% of eighth-grade KIPP students outperformed their local school district in reading, 70% did so in math.3 KIPP students, nearly 90% of whom are from low-income families, have graduated college at rates on par with all students nationally and three times greater than students from lowincome families.3 Transparency is one of the tenants of KIPP s work. KIPP publishes its results, the academic performance of every school, annually. KIPP has curated STEM curricula that include detailed lesson plans and digital simulations to support great teaching and inspire young minds.your support is needed to roll out this curriculum across all KIPP schools to help create the next generation of trailblazers. A gift of $25,000 pays for training for 10 teachers of computer science in high schools* A gift of $100,000 launches Amplify Science across five middle schools* Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook (computer and information technology occupations, 2012; accessed March 31, 2015), 1,000,000 more job than students by 2020, Code.org, accessed April 1, 2015 2 www.nationsreportcard.gov/reading_math_2015 and www.nationsreportcard.gov/science_2015 3 kipp.org/results/national *Statistics courtesy of KIPP 1
