Battle fought in Manassas, VA about 25 miles from US capital of Washington, D.C. III. Ends in Confederate VICTORY!!!! IV. Boosted the Confederate moral & gave the C.S.A. confidence in their battle for independence.
UNION NAVAL BLOCKADE I. The Anaconda Plan was created to squeeze the south into submission. II. In May 1861 the Union began a blockade of all Southern ports to stop supply shipments into the Confederacy. A. South can t manufacture stuff à need to get it from other nations (Great Britain) III. No items could come into or out of the C.S.A IV. Southerner built small ships called blockade runners to sneak through the union blockade V. South can t win with the Union blockade
BATTLE OF HAMPTON ROADS MARCH 8, 1862 I. The Confederate Navy fought against the Union Navy & the blockade II. The ironclad CSS Virginia (Merrimac) attacked the blockade made up of wooden ships she seemed unstoppable A. Ironclad à naval boats made of iron B. Much tougher & stronger than wooden boats C. Cannon balls don t hurt these ships III. The CSS Virginia would battle against the USS Monitor (a union ironclad) IV. The two fought to a stalemate (no one won) V. The Union blockade remained in place

Grant and the Union Army was able to defeat the Confederate Army near the town of Shiloh, TN IV.
