Virginia FIRST BULL RUN/MANASSAS JULY 21, 1861 I. The 1 st Battle of Bull Run, also known as the 1 st Battle of Manassas was the first major battle of the American Civil War II. Battle fought in Manassas, VA about 25 miles from US capital of Washington, D.C. III. Ends in Confederate VICTORY!!!! IV. Boosted the Confederate moral & gave the C.S.A. confidence in their battle for independence.

UNION NAVAL BLOCKADE I. The Anaconda Plan was created to squeeze the south into submission. II. In May 1861 the Union began a blockade of all Southern ports to stop supply shipments into the Confederacy. A. South can t manufacture stuff à need to get it from other nations (Great Britain) III. No items could come into or out of the C.S.A IV. Southerner built small ships called blockade runners to sneak through the union blockade V. South can t win with the Union blockade

BATTLE OF HAMPTON ROADS MARCH 8, 1862 I. The Confederate Navy fought against the Union Navy & the blockade II. The ironclad CSS Virginia (Merrimac) attacked the blockade made up of wooden ships she seemed unstoppable A. Ironclad à naval boats made of iron B. Much tougher & stronger than wooden boats C. Cannon balls don t hurt these ships III. The CSS Virginia would battle against the USS Monitor (a union ironclad) IV. The two fought to a stalemate (no one won) V. The Union blockade remained in place

SHILOH APRIL 6-7, 1862 Tennessee I. After the Confederate victory at Bull Run/Manassas Lincoln requested more soldiers A. War will not be over quickly II. In 1862 the Union Army invaded Tennessee in an attempt to control the Mississippi River III. General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army was able to defeat the Confederate Army near the town of Shiloh, TN IV. The Battle of Shiloh demonstrated how bloody & violent the war would be V. 100,000 soldiers à 25,000 were killed during Shiloh

FALL OF NEW ORLEANS APRIL 20, 1862 Louisiana I. Following Grant s victory at Shiloh in Tennessee the Union Army captured another key victory in New Orleans II. The Union Navy captured the city of New Orleans in April 1862 A. New Orleans controls the Mississippi River B. River runs right through the south à if the rive is controlled the south would be cut in two III. The Union plan to divide the south was almost complete à city of Vicksburg, MS was the last Confederate stronghold on the river

ANTIETAM/SHARPSBURG SEPTEMBER 16-18, 1862 Maryland I. In late 1862 General Lee planned to invade Union territory in an attempt to take the US capital Washington, D.C. II. Lee wanted a signature victory to gain British support for the southern effort III. Confederate & Union armies fought for three days at Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland IV. Battle ended when both Confederate & Union armies withdrew (stalemate) V. Single bloodiest battle of the Civil War A. Over 26,000 troops KIA at Antietam
