8 JUNE 2016 District # 7910 PUBLICATION # 269 Dinner Dance Fundraiser a Gala Event The annual dinner dance fundraiser was held Friday night, June 3rd at Cohasse Country Club. The evening started with President Austin Jenkins presenting Father Peter Joyce a $3,000 donation in support of the John Paul II Food Pantry. What a fabulous evening to raise funds for a great program. Over 60 members and guests attended this 3rd annual dinner / dance fundraiser. Kim Jenkins, Pam Korzec and Ramona Syriac welcomed everyone at the door and offered raffle tickets for the 50/50 and the prize baskets. Holly Christo, Director of the Literacy Volunteers, won the 50/50 raffle.

Klaus receives Service Above Self award Klaus Hachfeld (left) received the Service above Self award presented by District Governor James Fusco (center) at the annual 7910 District Conference held in Plymouth, MA on Saturday May 21st. Several members of the Sturbridge Rotary club and members of Klaus s family to include his wife Glenys (right) attended the conference specifically to observe Klaus receiving this award. Somehow everyone kept the issuance of the award a secret catching Klaus in complete surprise. The Service Above Self award is the highest honor which Rotary International can bestow upon individuals for their service. Charles Battersby Inducted as New Member Member Chair Bill Lemke (left) and Past District Governor Klaus Hachfeld (right) induct Charles Battersby (center) as a new member of the Sturbridge Rotary Club at the May 23rd meeting. Charles recently returned back to Sturbridge and looks forward to serving the community. Charles wife Marguerite accompanied him to the meeting to observe his induction ceremony. Joseph Coan presents landscape design President elect Otto Prohaska, PhD (left) presents Joseph Coan the Sturbridge Rotary mug thanking him for presenting landscape design at the May 23rd meeting. Joseph presented slides of projects that he has worked on, including in Atlanta, GA., the $500million Marine Corp University in Quantico, VA. He is now working on smaller residential and commercial projects through his own business, JCLA (Joseph Coan Landscape Architecture) in Sturbridge. He also had slides of displays he designed for the Boston Flower Show. Joseph then presented an idea of how we could build community gardens to supply the John Paul II food pantry with fresh, healthy nutritious food. If we would start this project in the fall, Rotary could have this project up and running by the spring of 2017. Southbridge s 250th Parade Saturday May 14th, Ken Jones (right) and Klaus Hachfeld (left) joined members of the Southbridge Rotary Club in the Southbridge parade to celebrated Southbridge s 250th anniversary.
Club News The Dictionary teams; Ken Jones delivered dictionaries to elementary school in Holland as Peter Zeh delivered them to the elementary school in Brimfield a couple weeks ago. Klaus Hachfeld and Charles Battersby delivered the dictionaries to the elementary school in Wales on June 2nd. 3. Peter Zeh and Dave Zonia delivered dictionaries Friday June 3rd to Burgess Elementary in Sturbridge. President Austin Jenkins & Dave Zonia presented the scholarship awards Thursday night June 2nd at Tantasqua Regional High School. Peter Zeh announced at the May 23 meeting that the Benefit Dinner that was put on by the Sturbridge Publick House was a success. Over $1,000 was raised. Also the 50/50 drawing was won by Linda Therian of North Grafton. At the May 23rd meeting, Otto presented Klaus with a congratulations award, the Klaus Rocks rock award, together with a number of Little Klaus Rocks reading truth, friendship, service, humanity, etc., which can be viewed at Klaus home RSVP required! Upcoming Events Saturday June 11th - Members and spouse/guest are invited to a cookout at the home of President Austin & Kim. Arrival anytime after 4pm. Kim has requested that you bring a dessert, appetizer or wine. Monday, June 13th - There will be a meeting. The scholarship recipients and parents are invited to meet the members. Our tradition is to have BBQ when meeting the recipients. Monday, June 20th - Tony Yeulenski, Life Skills Inc. from Webster will speak about support of physically and emotionally disabled individuals (This was rescheduled from April 25th). We will be presenting a Paul Harris Fellowship. President Austin will also be issuing awards. Monday, June 27th - This is our annual installation of new Club officers. The meeting will be held in the tent outside of the Publick House. We will also be presenting a Paul Harris Fellowship. Monday, July 4th - No meeting Independence Day!! Monday, August 29th - Mark your calendar for the Sturbridge Rotary Golf Tournament at Cohasse Country Club.
