Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences December Edition 2015 BSNA Newsletter Upcoming Meetings December Meeting Attention all students, please join the BSNA board members at the December 7th meeting at 12:30 in room 141. For the December meeting we will be exchanging Christmas cookies and showing off our ugly sweaters, winners of the ugly sweater contest will win a prize. Please come and hear stories from a 91 year old retired nurse who has seen many changes in the healthcare field and nursing. We will also be making some great Christmas crafts and will be sipping on hot chocolate. The December meeting will be our best meeting of the year, so tell your friends and bring your best cookies and wear your ugliest Christmas sweater as we relax those exam worries away! Merry Christmas to everyone! Any student who attends any of the BSNA meetings automatically becomes a member of BSNA, no membership dues required, just show up!

Volunteer Opportunities Marion House On 20th of November 8 of us volunteered our time at the Marian House prepping food and serving up lunch to almost 650 people! We had a blast especially getting to rock our new BSNA volunteer T-shirts.

Blood Drive Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences is excited to announce our second Blood Drive!!! on Friday, December 4th starting at 10 am. The blood drive will take place in UHAL room 117/ registration in the lobby where the couches are. We are hoping to fill the 40 donations slot times, which is enough blood to save and enhance the lives of up to 120 local patients!!! ALL blood types are needed! Appointments will be made first-come, first-serve, so sign-up early! Here is how you can sign up to donate blood: - Call (800) 365-0006 opt. 2 - donors.bonfils.org -- Site Code A908 ((enter the site code only, then click go and you will find our event)) For general information about blood donor eligibility or to contact Bonfils Donor Relations department with questions about blood donation, please call 800/365-0006, ext. 1. Clothing Drive The pediatric unit at Memorial Hospital is in need of donated clothes for the unit. They are in need of sizes ranging from infant (preemie) to teenagers age 18. They would prefer to have clothes that are new with tags still attached. BSNA has placed a box by the front entrance if anyone is able to help. The box will be in place until the end of the semester.

NSNA is a national organization that seeks to provide educational resources and professional development opportunities to student nurses. Anyone enrolled in a nursing program can join! What are the benefits of being an NSNA member? NSNA National Conference Join us in Disney World next spring! The National Student Nurses Association annual convention takes place in Orlando, Florida from March 30th-April 3rd. For those interested in receiving emails about details regarding the trip, please email Rachel Carter at rcarter@uccs.edu

Scholarships FNSNA Scholarship Application Instructions Read carefully. Failure to follow all instructions may result in disqualification. 1. Complete all sections on the online application. 2. Eligibility: Accelerated BSN students are eligible to apply for the scholarships by providing proof of acceptance and or enrollment in a state approved nursing school, in addition to all other required documents. 3. Processing Fee: a non-refundable $10 processing fee must be paid via Paypal and proof of payment must be uploaded to each application. (Link to Paypal is within the online scholarship application) 4. Action Item: the Clinical Instructor/Faculty Advisor of your program must complete the Clinical Instructor/Faculty Advisor Certification form. Please remember to put your name on this section. 5. Action Item: The school/college Financial Aid Representative must complete the Financial Aid Certification form. 6. Action Item: An unofficial transcript must be uploaded prior to submitting your application. In addition, grade reports for the fall semester are acceptable if not reported on the transcript. Scholarship winners must provide an official transcript prior to issuance of scholarship check. 7. Possible Action Item: Members of the National Student Nurses Association who wish to be considered for scholarships open only to NSNA members, must submit proof of membership with their application. NSNA Board of Directors and Nominating and Elections Committee are ineligible. 8. Possible Action Item: Students entering LPN/LVN to RN; or RN to BSN; or RN to MSN completion programs immediately upon graduation from associate degree or diploma programs must submit a letter of acceptance with the application or official confirmation that the application has been received by the new school. Proof of licensure and enrollment must be provided at the time the scholarship award check is issued. 9. Eligibility: Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or Alien with U.S. Permanent Resident Status or hold an Alien Registration Number. 10. Possible Action Item: If you have been employed as an RN, attach a copy of your resume and license. 11. All checks are made payable to the school towards the account of the scholarship recipient. Scholarship money will be used to offset the cost of tuition, academic fees and books only. 12. Funds not used by the end of the scholarship-funding period are to be returned to FNSNA. 13. Do not include information that is not requested. Do not include photos. 14. Only complete applications will be considered. The Selection Committee does not accept separate documents after the application has been received. 15. All applicants will be notified of a decision in March. Mentorship Program Juniors! Interested in guiding the new Spring Semester students through the school year? Consider becoming a mentor! Mentorship is a great way to coach students who, once like you, are nervous and excited about entering into the life of a student nurse! High School Visits Over the past few months BSNA has visited many high schools in the area. We have talked to students about Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth El College of Nursing and Health Science and have answered many of their questions. If you would like to attend a high school visit please contact Michelle Dunlap at mdunlap2@uccs.edu! Seniors Only With graduation around the corner, it is that time again to get you pictures turned in to BSNA. All pictures that you have taken while at Beth El need to be turned in no later than April 15th by the end of the day. Mom Squad Cooking Corner Machaca Beef Ingredients 3 lb. chuck roast 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground black pepper 2 tbsp. olive oil 1 large onion chopped 1/2 jar chunky pace salsa 1 tbsp. chili powder 1 1/2 tsp. cumin powder 1 tsp. ground cayenne pepper 1 (5oz) bottle of Tapatio brand hot sauce (or as much as you desire) 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 cup of water 1/2 tsp. cumin powder 1tsp. paprika Cooking Instructions Season meat with salt and pepper on all sides. Brown all sides of the meat in skillet with olive oil. Place meat in Crockpot. Cover the meat evenly with all ingredient except 1/2 tsp. of cumin powder and 1 tsp. of paprika. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Remove the meat from Crockpot and shred it using two forks, removing all the fat from the meat. Place the shredded meat back in the Crockpot and add the 1/2 tsp. of cumin and the 1tsp. of paprika. Cook on low for an additional hour. Place meat on flour tortillas with cheese and other burrito fixings. Freeze any leftovers for a great on the go meal. Also great topped with green chili sauce!
