CAITR 2003 25 th Conference of Australian Institutes of Transport Research 3 5 December 2003 CAITR Rationale CONFERENCE BROCHURE The conference of Australian Institutes of Transport Research (CAITR) is a forum that provides transport researchers and professionals with an opportunity to present and discuss their work in an informal and supportive environment and to meet with their peers and colleagues. The conference is particularly suited to students undertaking research towards a postgraduate degree or working on undergraduate projects in transport as it gives them a chance to present work in progress, receive constructive feedback and improve their presentation skills. Similarly, presenters with work in progress and conceptual innovations and ideas are welcome and supported with constructive feedback. Nonpresenting participants are accorded a warm welcome and invited to participate fully in the conference activities including the conference dinner. This year marks the 25th CAITR and your host, Professor Mike Taylor and his team at the Transport Systems Centre of the aim to celebrate the occasion with style. CAITR 2003 will be hosted by the, from 3 5 December. The conference itself will consist of paper presentations and a summary from a representative of each transport research entity of their activities since the last CAITR. Call for Abstracts If you are interested in presenting a paper at the conference, please submit an abstract of between 150 and 300 words to the conference secretariat by Friday 17 October 2003. Kylie Fairbank, Conference Secretariat Adelaide SA 5001 Email submissions are preferred and may be sent to kylie.fairbank@unisa.edu.au. Please put CAITR 2003 Abstract in the subject line of your email. Submissions must contain the name, affiliation and contact details (including address, telephone number and email) of all of the authors and indicate who is the contact author. Prizes Though the conference is to a large degree informal, there exists a serious consideration for the quality of the papers presented by undergraduates and postgraduate students. Two prizes for students will be awarded. The Robert L Pretty Memorial Prize for the best undergraduate student paper and the Rodney Vaughan Memorial Prize for the best postgraduate research student paper. The Robert L Pretty Memorial Prize is sponsored by Akçelik and Associates (www.aatraffic.com) and sponsorship for the Rodney Vaughan Memorial Prize is once again provided by The Urban Transport Institute (www.tuti.com.au). Both organisations are active in research and consultancy domestically and internationally and have generously supported CAITR for many years. Students must meet the following conditions to be eligible for either of the prizes. (1) Printed copies of the full paper must be available at the start of the conference. (2) An electronic copy of the paper must be submitted to the Conference Convenor (Stuart Clement: stuart.clement@unisa.edu.au) before the conference starts.

(3) Where the supervisor(s) is a (are) co-author(s), the student should be the first-named and should be given main responsibility for the development and production of the paper. (4) The paper must be presented by the student. Information for Authors and Presenters As with past CAITR conferences, presenters are required to bring along 60 two-hole punched copies of their final papers. A short biography of each presenter also needs to be submitted to the information desk on arrival at the conference. As a diversity of researchers attend CAITR, papers should explain any technical detail and concept. The front page of each paper should include authors; name, affiliation, relevant contact details, as well as an abstract. Please provide an electronic version of your paper to Kylie Fairbank (kylie.fairbank@unisa.edu.au) prior to the start of the conference. Presented papers will be loaded onto the permanent CAITR website maintained at ITS-Monash after the conference. An IBM-PC compatible computer running PowerPoint 2000 under Windows 2000, data projector, overhead projector and slide projector will be available. Presenters are encouraged to bring their PowerPoint files saved in PC format on floppy disk or CD-ROM.
