Administrative History The Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1902 on the campus of the Michigan State Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University. The fraternity was never absorbed by a national fraternity and never expanded beyond Eastern. The fraternity went through much turmoil in the mid 1990s when a pledge, Eric Fillyaw, was killed in a car accident after leaving an event at the Kappa Phi Alpha house and the fraternity was put on two year probation from the University because of the incident. Although the fraternity was reestablished after this two year probation, in 2009 additional conduct violations led the University to suspend the fraternity. They are no longer an active organization on campus. Scope and Contents The Kappa Phi Alpha Fraternity collection contains information on accounting records, constitution, house regulations, incident reports, meeting minutes, member lists, pledge letters, songs, clippings, correspondence, events, flyers, newsletters programs and scrapbook. The collection is arranged alphabetically and dates from 1929-2011. The collection is divided into five series: Administration and History, Composites, Eric Fillyaw Case, Publicity and Outreach,, and a Scrapbook. The Administration and History series contains information on accounting records, constitution, house regulations, incident reports, meeting minutes (which has a complete run from 1930-1969), member lists, pledge letters, and songs.
