What s Inside? KAP Details Weigh In Dates and Times Meade County 4-H Connections September 2017 4-H Families Kansas State Fair entries must be to the Extension Office by 6:00 AM on Friday, September 8 th! Please bring in any non-perishable by Thursday, so we can get those loaded. Building on last month s preview of Record Books, please remember that Meade County 4-H has two divisions in record books noncompetitive record books and competitive Kansas Award Portfolios (KAP). In this month s issue we will focus on the KAP. We would like to encourage each family to at least look over the appropriate KAP (Sr., Int., or Jr.) and consider filling out this form, at a minimum for your favorite project. If you are looking to sell an item again at the 2018 Meade County Fair, filling out one KAP can help complete some of the additional requirements! Please do not wait till the last minute to fill these out. Many veteran 4- H families know these can take time and effort. Local Project Meetings & Events Project Awards Kansas Award Portfolio Meade County youth wishing to be recognized in a project must complete a correct Kansas Award Portfolio (KAP). Each age division has their own KAP that are designed to be age appropriate. KAP s are considered competitive and are judged by other Extension Agents. Due to space constraints, we have shrunk pages to ¼ page. You will need to download the full size pages from the website. Please note you will need one page from last month s newsletter (the personal page) for each KAP. KAP s are judged ONLY against their own age division. This simply means, that only a Jr. KAP would compete against other Jr. KAP s in that project. This also would apply for any Int. and Sr. KAP. Meade County 4-H will then award Project Winners to the top half of the submitted KAP s in each age & project. Example: 5 KAP s were submitted in the Swine Project. 3 Jr. 1 Int. and no Sr KAP s were submitted. At Achievement Night, 2 Jr, and 1 Int. would be recognized as winners in the Swine Project. September 25 at 5:00 PM Record Books & KAPs DUE To the Extension Office Bucket Calf Project Record from Fair counted as a KAP for 2017 Bucket Calf Project Records that were turned in during the consultation judging during the county fair are in the office. We will take these in place of a KAP! Youth must also turn in a non-competitive record book for this record to count as a KAP. So please start working on your personal page, 4-H story, and permanent record. Youth can also come pick up their Bucket Calf Project Record to edit or make any story/ribbon additions from the county fair. Please notify Elly if you would like to submit your Bucket Calf Project Record as a KAP! We will NOT assume you want to submit it as a KAP. What s in a KAP? 4-Her s must simply complete the following three sections: Cover Page (Name, Age Division, Project) Personal Page Kansas Award Portfolio (KAP) age appropriate form Links to online versions of Record Book Forms: Personal Page: http://www.meade.k-state.edu/4-h/personal%20page%2008.pdf 4-H Story: Use a blank Word Document on your Computer Permanent Record: http://www.meade.k-state.edu/4-h/permanent_record%2008.pdf Kansas Award Portfolio Forms: (Ages 7-9 can complete the Junior KAP! 4-H Achievement Pins Every member should consider applying for their next 4-H achievement pin. These pins are offered each year to all 4-Hers. Depending on your age and how many years you have been in 4-H, and what pins you have already earned determines what pin you are eligible for. Many choose to go in sequential order, however this is not required. All pins are due along with record book and KAP s on September 25 th. 1 st year members If you attended a minimum of half of your monthly club meetings, you should apply for the 1 st year membership pin. 2 nd year and Older 4-H members will need to turn in a non-competitive record book and look at the additional requirements to see if they are eligible to receive a pin. Check your e-mail box for notifications from the Extension Office. SAVE THE DATES for 2018 Weigh-In and Camp! If you carry an academic calendar, mark these dates! If you don t, be sure to put a sticky note with these dates down in December so you can transfer them over to your 2018 calendars! Please remember BOTH weigh-ins are mandatory and counselors leave a day early for counselor training at any 4-H Camp! Beef Weigh In: March 23, 2018 (4:00-6:00 PM) Small Animal Weigh In: May 7, 2018 (4:00-6:00 PM) Wild Horse 4-H Camp: June 4-6, 2018 Heart of Kansas 4-H Camp: June 9-12, 2018 Dairy Heifer Project for 2018 For the 2018 4-H year we will be hands on deck with the Dairy project. Last year, Savannah Ingram worked closely with High Plains Ponderosa Dairy which is located outside of Plains, Kansas. With the work that she has put in, High Plains is offering a leasing program to 4-H members. We strongly feel this would be a great opportunity and learning experience for members of all ages! The dairy project is a great project that does not get enough recognition in Kansas and it is our goal to change that. There will be meeting October 8th to cover group and individual goals with the dairy project as well as to set dates for the leasing of the animals. Just remember you don't have to live on a farm to lease a heifer. We look forward to seeing you there!! If you are interested in more information on the lease program or the dairy project meeting you can contact Sarah Sura; 620-873-0254 or sarahannsura@hotmail.com
48 Hours of 4-H As the County Citizenship Project Leaders, Walker and Gatlin Clawson want to encourage all of the 4-Hers in Meade County to come together for a County-wide 48 Hours of 4-H service project. Our goal is to pack 1,150 gift-filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. On Saturday, September 30th, 4-Hers are asked to come to the "B" building at the fairgrounds to count and prepare dozens of items to be placed in assembly lines for the community to pack in the boxes the next day. We will start working at 9:00am on Saturday, and go until we get done. If 4-Hers are not able to come at 9:00, but can come later in the day, please just stop by anytime to help. You may bring your parents and siblings to get in on the fun too. This is a huge project so we will take all of the help we can get! On Sunday, October 1 at 2:00pm, Meade County 4-Hers will host the community for the Meade County Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child at the "B" building at the fairgrounds. Don't be late. Last year, we packed one thousand boxes in less than an hour. We will probably be done by 3:30 this year. If you will be able to pack boxes on Sunday, please remember to bring notes to the children to put in the boxes that you pack. We are requiring each box at the packing party to include a note this year. It should be positive and uplifting and may have your photo on it if you would like. If you sign your name to the note, you might want to also include an email address on it, as many people hear back by email from the child who received the box. We are excited to work with you on this 48 Hours of 4-H service project. Let's make 4-H known in Meade County! Tractor Supply Paper Clover Promotion Other Opportunities Please join us for Paper Clover October 4-15. Tractor Supply Co. is honored to support 4-H programs across the country. TSC would like to invite 4-H clubs to come by our store during the upcoming Paper Clover event. We know that when clubs are present in-store during the event, donations increase by more than 40%. Your club can get involved by setting up a table to sell Paper Clovers, help bag customer s purchases, display animals, or even demonstrate projects. We understand that you're busy! If your club can't make it to the store, feel free to set up a display table showing off all the great things you're working on. In addition to helping raise more money for your county program, if you participate in store, you'll be eligible to enter or Paper Clover Participation sweepstakes. TSC would like to cultivate year round relationships with local 4-H clubs and welcomes you in-store not only during Paper Clover but year around! We encourage you to post information about your club on the community board and reach out to your local store manager about hosting fundraisers throughout the year. We will also be having farmers market October 7 th at the Dodge City Store. You can call the store to sign up. (620) 408-9119

4-H ENROLLMENT FOR 2017-2018 Enrollment begins October 2, 2017 4-H members should mark October 2 nd on their calendars. This is the first day youth and volunteers can enroll in 4HOnline for the 2017/18. Please remember this will be the first year youth will pay a $15 enrollment fee. $15 Enrollment Fee 4-H in 2017-18 Many of you may remember from May and June s newsletter that starting with the 2017-2018 4-H year, that Kansas will be implementing a $15 per member fee for all community club 4-H members. At the Extension Office, we now know what this will look like when members enroll starting October 2, 2017. Cloverbuds, Leaders and Volunteers enrolled on 4HOnline will NOT be charged. Only 4-H members ages 7-18 will be charged the $15 enrollment fee. Please continue to read all information and call Elly at the Extension Office with any questions you may have. ONLINE ENROLLMENT DETAILS When a 4-H family begins enrolling online, you will see two new sections (intent to pay and invoice). After filling out the basic information, you will need to select your payment intentions. These options include, pay with a credit card or debit card online, pay with a check (due to state office within 7 days), or waiver for those who cannot afford cost. After selecting your payment intent, you will then continue on to the health form, club and project enrollment. After completing these steps, the final step after groups is an invoice page, where you will see the charge amount, before clicking submit enrollment. PAYING Our local office cannot collect these fees! You will need to pay on your own either by check or debit/cc card. If paying online, you will have complete a separate transaction for each child. If paying by check, you can will need to include a note with the check saying who the payment is for. We will suggest that ANYONE paying by check, print the invoice or use the group payment form. The group payment form is so that multiple youth can be paid for by one check. Those who cannot afford the $15 can apply for a waiver. 4-H MEMBER STATUS After submitting online enrollment, a 4-Her will become a pending member of Kansas 4-H. At this point, you will be recognized in our system and receive any 4-H mailings, notifications, etc. A member will be considered active once the $15 fee has been paid.
$15 FOR WHAT? We understand paying for the 4-H program is a new concept for many Kansans. We first want to recognize the enrollment fee is designed to invest and enhance the future of Kansas 4-H. It was not an easy decision that made lightly by many individuals across the state. This task force met for a year and studied what other states have done to help stabilize and help provide a steady and sustainable source of funds for programming. In October 4-H Connections we will provide more details about enrolling online. We ask everyone wait until this newsletter is published for further directions on how to enroll correctly in 4HOnline. Please call the office or your community club leaders if you have more questions about the $15 enrollment fee.
