IEE/09/758/SI2.558286 - MixBioPells WP 5 / D 5. Report about the regional networking activities Date: April 2012 Anna Sager, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden With support of all project partners: DBFZ - Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum VTT - Technical Research Centre of Finland Bioenergy 2020+ DTI - Danish Technological Institute Protecma Energia Y Media Ambiente S.L. 1. Background The market integration of alternative biomass pellets is still blocked by various constraints. Within the EU project MixBioPells the project partners identify the constraints and drivers in detail and find promising market introduction concepts for enhancing the market relevance of alternative pellets in Europe. To increase the level of dissemination and the transformation of the gathered information into networking activities also on regional level regional working meetings were carried out to follow up the activities of WP2. The participants were key actors involved and addressed in the workshop of WP 2 to build up further biobusiness activities and projects in the different regions. The objective was to include at least one manufacturer of combustion technology, one engineer or consultant for designing heating systems, two raw material suppliers, one pellet producer and one representative of the local administration, which all were willing to build up a new regional bio-business. In the first meeting the objectives for were defined to provide the possibility of measuring the success of the activities. The meetings were be held in the region at the subcontractors place for four times every three months starting after the initial workshop under guidance of the project partners. Thus the network building on regional level was ensured, including also agricultural key actors. Additionally further information gathered in the project was transferred to the region and successful new bio-business developments were included in the project (initiators handbook in WP 4). The activities and results of the meetings are summarised in this report including typical problems and possible approaches found in the activities. 2. Method All partners were provided with a concept and guidelines as well as support on how to carry out the networking meetings. Furthermore SP, the WP leader, provided all partners with templates for reporting the networking activities. See below for concept and templates.

4

Figure 1 Concept for networking meetings 5

Figure 2 Template for reporting. Results In total 28 meetings with 20 participants were held in the partner regions. See table below for more detailed information. For detailed information on the single events please see Annex I. The reports include summaries, minutes, invites, presentations and list of participants of the meetings. All reports are also available on www.mixbiopells.eu. The built up regional networks with their regular meetings led in all participating countries to intensive discussions, transfer of knowledge as well as capacity building and exchange of experience between key actors. The capacity building and discussions with and between key actors from the entire alternative biomass to pellets and briquettes chains resulted in bio business activities and projects. The results are also reflected in the case studies and cost analysis carried out in WP2. 6

After initial difficulties to establish regional networks and regular meetings all partners succeeded to gather important regional key actors and meet for at least 4 regional meetings. Despite different conditions in the different regions most key actors are facing similar problems on regional level. Available capacity and knowledge about the topic differs quite a lot from region to region (larger availability in central and northern Europe than in southern Europe), however the needs for support (technical and financial) are same in all regions. 7
