President s Message It has been an honor to have served as your president this past year. I am so proud of our Board of Directors, all our contributing nurses and our many accomplishments. In line with our theme of Courageous Care this year, the vision and values of AACN and the Greater Boston Chapter were integrated to provide educational and community service programs for nurses throughout our region. I believe we remain successful in our mission to respond to the needs of our critical care nurses, giving members resources to implement AACN s vision and to assist each member to meet their individual professional development goals. Educational Offerings We continue to provide free educational outreach programs at local hospitals. In September, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital hosted a well-received program on Delirium. This year I was pleased to welcome several new members to our board from Boston Children s Hospital and in December, Boston Children s Hospital presented a great program: Transition of care from pediatrics to adult. Our chapter remains dedicated to promoting and supporting national certification for nurses. We have offered a CCRN/PCCN course every year with nationally renowned speaker, Cammy House-Fancher, MSN, ACNP, CCRN-CMC, PCCN. This year the course will take place on October 19 th and 20 th for CCRN and October 20 th and 21 st for PCCN review. To further promote professional development and innovation, we will be offering a class October 1st to help nurses develop abstracts and poster presentations. Our spring celebration at Paparazzi restaurant in March included a professional development component featuring Mary O Connell, MSN.RN. CPAN, who presented Nurturing the Nurse. This very successful event 2

celebrating our profession was sold out with over 60 nurses attending. We are excited that we were able to provide two $500.00 scholarships this year to attend the National Teaching Institute in New Orleans as well. Colleen and Mary O Connell at Spring Celebration 3

Recipients for NTI Scholarship Barbara Regan (BIDMC) & Melanie Nadar (BWH) PAST PRESIDENTS OF GREATER BOSTON CHAPTER On April 14 th, we collaborated with Regis College in Weston to hold a research program entitled Emerging Trends in Critical Care. We had 17 poster presentations and three podium presentations this year for our research program. 4

Community Service Our chapter continues to support Project Hope. Project Hope provides low-income women and children access to education, jobs, housing and emergency services. We provided funding, new children s books and clothing for interviews over the past year. In May, board members had attended a breakfast with Project Hope. We heard women share their stories of success aided by Project Hope. In the next year we plan to pursue opportunities to expand our initiatives. I encourage you to continue to challenge yourselves. We would love to have you attend our board meetings and our educational programs. Plan on submitting an abstract for our next research night for next Spring. I want to congratulate you all for making this year a successful year and for contributing to our nursing profession. It has been a privilege for me to serve as your president. I am excited to work with our new president, Dennis Doherty MSN, RN, CCRN from Boston Children s Hospital and I look forward to supporting our chapter for years to come. Thank you for a great year. With gratitude, Colleen Ryan MSN RN CCRN 5

Horizons Warwick, RI in 2016 Horizons 2016 - A Critical Care Symposium Linda Thach Le, BSN, RN, CCRN-CMC-CSC Attending the Horizon s Critical Care Symposium from April 5 th - April 7 th, 2016 has been a wonderful experience. I had the honor of meeting Karen McQuillan, current president of AACN who gave an excellent speech on Courageous Care. This keynote speech has inspired, motivated, and helped me regained my passion in nursing. I also had the opportunity to network and connect with critical care nurses from neighboring states who all share a common ground. It was great to share our own experiences, and see how different our practices were between our hospitals, and it is amazing just how much we can learn from each other. Nursing is a career that requires commitment to lifelong learning and the caliber of classes offered at Horizons helped me achieve the knowledge I needed to continue on my nursing journey. After all, knowledge is power! Linda with Karen McQuillan @ Horizon s 7

2016-2017 AACN Theme One of AACN President Clareen Wiencek s favorite quotes is attributed to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. She says the quote is at the root of AACN s theme for 2016-2017, It Matters. We know it matters that we care courageously for the sickest and most vulnerable patients and do it in chaotic and ever-changing health systems, Wiencek says. It matters that we are members or leaders of interdisciplinary teams who are always at the bedside watching, preventing errors and averting disasters. Wiencek believes it matters that nurses are the architect of the memory for families of patients who experience the crisis of acute or critical illness, and that the end-of-life care they are sometimes called to provide is indispensable. We know it matters, she says, when we hold the hand of a dying patient and wipe the tears of the patient s wife or father or daughter or sometimes our own. She adds that it also matters that members of the AACN community are bold and relentless in driving change. We are nurses, Wiencek says, and it matters! 2016 NTI in New Orleans NTI 2016: Online Sessions Available Until Aug. 31 It was great to be together at the National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI) in New Orleans.
