President s Message Greetings to all, We had a wonderful year under the leadership of Janet Eagan and I hope to build on those accomplishments this year. Being a member of the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses has always been a rewarding and enriching experience for me and I am truly honored to serve as your president. Our national president, Karen McQuillen, has announced this year s theme would be Courageous Care, challenging us to show the world that we as nurses don t just provide care for people. We tend to the needs of patients and their families at the most vulnerable times of their lives. Kelly Johnson, RN, (Miss Colorado), recently championed that theme and the importance of nurses at this year s Miss America Pageant. I was inspired when she said we change patient s lives because we care about them and McQuillen has emphasized that nurses show courage daily. Given the challenges we face today, it takes courage to provide quality patient care, it takes courage to advocate for quality patient care and it takes courage to educate the community on the importance of quality patient care. Kelly Johnson displayed that courage to a worldwide audience on September 16 th this year and we can work to expand her message. I encourage all of you to get involved this year and use the positive energy she created to educate, advocate and provide quality patient care in an always challenging environment. This year we will be working with a new charitable organization called Project Hope. It provides low-income women with children access to education, jobs, housing, and emergency services. We will be volunteering as well as collecting new children s books for them at our educational programs. Our regular education programming continues. On September 10, 2015 Dr. Christopher Carter presented Understanding Delirium. It was well received by all who attended at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital s beautiful campus in Charlestown. On December 10 th, we will be offering Transition of Care from Pediatrics to Adult at Boston Children s Hospital. This presentation is free and a light supper will be served. Be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming programs. The CCRN/PCCN Review Course will be held November 4 to 6, 2015 at the Lantana in Randolph. Nationally recognized authority and all-around great nurse, 2
Cammy House- Fancher, will be presenting again. This course is a great review as well as preparation for either the CCRN or PCCN Certification Examination. The Greater Boston Chapter continues to partner with Regis College to present research and innovative projects from our local hospitals and the annual Regis College Nursing Research Forum will be held April 14, 2016 at Regis College. We will be seeking forum and poster abstracts in November. Our chapter will provide mentoring and support if you are interested in submitting a poster. We are also in the process of planning our annual Spring Celebration Dinner. This is a time where we celebrate members efforts with an educational program as well as a great dinner. Additionally, we are working with AACN s Horizon s Planning Committee for Region 1 Nursing Conference to plan the upcoming Horizons 2016 Conference in Warwick, RI on April 5 to 7, 2016. We anticipate continued great participation in all these events. We are always looking for opportunities to reach out and expand our initiatives. If you would like us to present an educational session at your hospital, please contact us. We can provide a speaker, contact hours, and refreshments. I look forward to meeting all of you at chapter meetings and programs. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the Board with suggestions or ideas on how we can better serve you.
