Region Skåne (Northern Connections) "(Bio) Methanol as a fuel - raw materials, production, distribution, engine technology and applications" Malmö 11 September 2015 Places and spaces Workshop Organisers: Region Skåne the regional government of Skåne / regional authority Mr Peter Askman, Region Skåne The workshop discussion, led by Mr Peter Askman, will be based on questions like the ones detailed below under the heading Outline. Since the idea behind the workshop is to involve the participants, no formal speakers besides Mr Askman have been designated. The question of environmentally friendly fuels and energy is highly prioritised by Region Skåne: Our region s ambitious objectives on phasing out fossil fuels form a challenge that requires collaboration on all levels and across sectors. A topic of great interest, besides for example Skåne s work on biogas - the focus of a recent regional strategy - is methanol and its potential as fuel for the shipping industry. Environmental benefits could be considerable if a part of the 80,000 ships on our seas convert to methanol, and it would bring other positive effects such as the development of new businesses and jobs. The goal of the workshop is to seek answers to questions like: - What's currently happening, and what is planned, in the field of methanol in Sweden and on an EU-level today? - How could methanol function as an energy carrier and make a significant contribution to the achievement of the 2030/2050 - targets? - How should a system for the entire value chain of methanol be designed in order to maximise costefficiency and output? - Is there an interest for involvement in future projects / consortia in the field? Representatives from the Universities, voluntary and community sector, local authorities, local government, enterprises. 5
