September Newsletter Comrades, Here comes fall! Kids are back to school, and weather is crazy! We completed a successful golf tournament on the 20th of August. We had 94 golfers and, despite the drizzle and chill, had a great time! The Auxiliary had a fantastic silent auction, and everything fell into place. I encourage you all to come out next year whether to golf or to help. That being said, I owe a huge thank you to all the Post members and Auxiliary members who took their time to make this tournament a success. We wouldn t be able to do the good things we do, without a great core team and we have that. I have been encouraged by the increasing numbers attending Post meetings and Commanders Calls please continue to invite those members you know who haven t been around in a while. If you re reading this and you haven t stepped into the Post in a while---come join us for some events! We d love to meet you! We ve been doing really great with our membership. We recently had the Life Members added back to our count and are at 77.57% with 6 new members and 2 reinstated members, that s great news! We elected a new Jr. Vice Commander at the last meeting. Please welcome Wallace James the next time you see him. We ll do great things with the leadership team, and we are all excited to continue our journey the upcoming year. Remember, if you have children or grandchildren in 6-12th grades, or even homeschooled, they qualify to participate in our annual youth scholarships. The winner then proceeds to District where they choose a winner and on to the Department of Missouri where a winner is chosen. That winner then has a chance for a $30,000 scholarship for high school and $5,000 scholarship for middle school. In short, it s worth their time to apply! The entries are due by October 31st to the Post. This is going to be a busy month, I look forward to seeing you soon! From the Hill Historic Defense Bill Signed Into Law: On Monday, President Donald Trump signed the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. The final bill does not include the misguided proposal, but does include several provisions to improve the financial viability of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, such as authorizing the home to accept financial gifts, and expanding eligibility to disabled veterans and spouses who are not currently eligible. The bill will postpone the fee increase that was scheduled to be implemented in October 2018, but applies only to those who were residents as of April 9, 2018, and authorizes gradual fee increases over the next three years.
