We will be staying in the River Spirt Casino Resort, which has just completed an amazing $365 million dollar renovation and expansion. Our meeting will be held at the Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (OSH) in the CityPlex Towers, just two blocks away from the casino. Friday night kickoff will start the fun with an industry sponsored reception with cocktails and heavy hors d oeuvres at OSH. United States Senator and physician Dr. Tom Coburn will be joining us to discuss the state of American politics and his vision for our country s future. Gaming and wealth beyond your wildest imagination will follow at the casino. On Saturday we have an exciting program. Dr. Leonard Gomella from Jefferson Medical University will be giving us updates on urologic oncology. Dr. Michael Eisenberg from Stanford University will be reviewing male hypogonadism and infertility. Report from the OSUA Executive Director It has been another eventful year for urology. We have a great opportunity to gather and re-group on February 24-25 in Tulsa. We are pleased to meet at a new venue this year, Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (OSH) in the CityPlex Towers. They have just expanded their meeting space and I think it will be a refreshing change and its size will serve our meeting well. We will begin with an all are invited reception at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. We will end the reception with a brief word from former U.S. Senator, Dr. Tom Coburn. It will be very interesting to hear his thoughts having been so involved in the Senate during the passage of President Obama s Affordable Care Act. You won t be hungry when you leave but it will still give you time to dine out if you like. Our meeting begins early Saturday with breakfast at 7:00 a.m. followed by a great program developed by OSUA President, Dr. Sean Doyle with the help of the OSUA Board. We usually have only one stateof-the-art keynote to fly in for our meeting, but this year we are coast-to-coast. We have Dr. Leonard Gomella from Philadelphia addressing several complex urologic oncology issues, and we also have Dr. Michael Eisenberg from Stanford addressing several male health issues. I think these topics will - 1 - Charles A. McWilliams, MD Local Oklahoma speakers including Drs. Jonathan Heinlen, Zachary Chonka, Shaun Grewal, and Mark Lindgren will be discussing topics including the AUA AQUA registry, prostate MRI, and fertility issues. In the state of Oklahoma and nationwide, the public is being bombarded with advertisements for Men s Health centers offering services delivered by providers with questionable training and borderline ethics. Come educate yourselves on the appropriate treatment of these patients. It is rare that the Oklahoma urologic community comes together in a venue that offers this much excitement and opportunity for professional networking. I encourage all of you to register for the meeting, reserve your rooms at the River Spirit, and come join the fun! Sean M. Doyle, MD 2016-2017 OSUA President be of interest to all of us. We are also privileged to hear from several known authorities from the private sector and the University of Oklahoma, Department of Urology. We will end the program with several interesting complex cases presented by residents from the University of Oklahoma Urology Program. I want to also remind you to consider the many educational and advocacy meetings being held in 2017. One that is very informative is the Joint Advocacy Conference held this year, March 5-7. This is sponsored each year by the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) and the AUA. We meet in Washington, D.C., near the Capitol and arrange meetings with our Congressional representatives and their staff. We speak out in behalf of urology and hear from national authorities on issues relevant to the practice of urology. The cost to attend is reasonable. The OSUA in conjunction with the JAC and AACU sponsor some attendees each year. With the new leadership in the White House we anticipate things to be very interesting and hopefully more patient/physician friendly. Let me know if you are interested. Charles A. McWilliams, MD OSUA Executive Director

Report from the OSUA Historian William L. Parry, MD In these busy days and seeking to find the right answer for many problems, let us pause for a few kindly recollections of five member colleagues who passed away in 2016. Walter Eugene Baumann, MD, age 69: Walt was the quiet hard working urologist in Okmulgee for 34 years. Members did not see him very much at meetings for his extra time was spent hunting and fishing and white water rafting. He was a talented woodcarver and in retirement enjoyed being home with Lynette and interacting with his family of grandchildren. Not many of us knew he regularly made major hunting trips to Africa for many years. Harold Wayne Calhoun, MD, age 83, Past President of OSUA: Harold was proud of his family farm background in Western Oklahoma and patients indeed experienced him as the beloved country doctor. He pursued aspects of outdoor life and nature, be it hunting or fishing, building or repair work, gardening, hiking or extensive travels with Myrna. One always noted his respect for individuals and the humor he would add to all kinds of situations. At urologic meetings he was at his best with the Western Urologic Forum, a selected balanced group of academic leaders and community urologists. He loved challenging and sharing case problems and various issue experiences. Harold said his tough last few years could have been a lot worse. Paul Edward Donat, MD, age 79: Paul was honored last year as the first Recipient of the Pioneer Award in Urology by the OU Department for his outstanding dedication and exceptional contributions in Urology. Just when he was enjoying retirement, he was found to have metastatic gastric cancer. Still he kept his humor and made use of his poetry interests. He had been chief of urology and of professional service at a Field Hospital (MASH Unit) during the Vietnam Conflict. Paul said his patients were part of his family. From fellowship training he offered extra endocrinology and physiology aspects to his urologic care. Not many colleagues knew he taught perineal surgery courses at M.D. Anderson and in Sydney, Australia. Paul loved his many business ventures and with his wife Anna had them in order at the end. James Randal Leach, MD, age 78, Past President of OSUA: Jim introduced and established pediatric urology with fellowship training as a separate type of practice in Tulsa. At St. John Medical Center, he was chief of the urology section, chief of staff and on its Board of Directors for 10 years. Highly active in earlier years, he played tennis, sailed, gardened and travelled the world. Best in later life was concentrating on playing golf and enjoying his regular poker games. Jim and Carol lost an adult son and with their daughter welcomed a Dutch foreign exchange student into the family. The onset of Parkinson s disease shortened his career but not his love of being a husband, father and grandfather. Victor Lycurgus Robards Jr., MD, age 79, Past President of OSUA: Vic turned himself almost alone into becoming the original urology kidney transplant surgeon for Tulsa, much to his credit. He was chief of staff at the St. John Medical Center and the first president of the Urologic Specialists of Oklahoma when two major practicing groups merged. Well he remembered being assigned to Germany as a Major in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict, and he was such an honest individual at all times. Vic was more than a Deacon in his Baptist Church, making mission trips with his wife Anita around the world. Northeastern University honored him as an Outstanding Alumnus. He and Anita had a second home in a mountain area of Colorado. There he loved to fly-fish and be with his children and grandchildren. His passing was relatively unexpected. At the, Chairman Michael S. Cookson established a second Pioneer Award in the Department of Urology, this one for pediatric urology. At a special reception, Dr. Donald B. Halverstadt, Professor Emeritus of Urology, was honored for his lifetime achievements as a pediatric urologist. In administrative roles, members may also remember Don being chairman of both the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, chief of staff at the Children s Hospital, provost at the OUMC and vice-chairman of the Department of Urology. We were fortunate to keep him in Oklahoma because he was scheduled to become the head surgeon for renal transplantation at the UCLA Medical Center. Your Historian is deeply grateful for the Appreciation Award and plaque presented him by both the Oklahoma State Urological Association and the Department of Urology of the OU College of Medicine. This nicely proceeded as I was to receive the William P. Didusch Art and History Award of the American Urological Association and a Special Award of the Society of University Urologists at their Annual Meetings.
