Whole Kids Foundation Submitted: October 20, 2013 Grant Size: $2,000 GRANTS SUBMITTED October 2013 A Whole Kids Foundation grant will support Fallsvale Elementary School s innovative horticulture program which uses gardening as an effective ecology and life science learning tool as well as an outlet for student self-expression. Students will develop a sense of purpose by working with the earth and planting seeds that grow into a bountiful, tangible harvest. The Garden Club will also provide student-grown fresh fruits and vegetables to supplement the ES lunch program. Westinghouse Electric Company N-Visioning A Brighter Future Submitted: October 4, 2013 Grant Size: $3,000 The Westinghouse Electric Company provides hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education project funding. To extend North Shore Elementary School s STEM Program, LEGO Robotics Education will be introduced into the 1 st grade Science curriculum. Students will discover STEM information through cooperative, interactive, inquiry-based and/or problem-based learning activities as they build a computer-controlled robot. 1
Westinghouse Electric Company N-Visioning A Brighter Future Submitted: October 8, 2013 Grant Size: $3,000 The Westinghouse Electric Company provides hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education project funding. To extend the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program, Baldwin Lane Elementary School will introduce Web Design into the 6 th grade curriculum. Students will discover Web Design through cooperative, interactive, inquiry-based and/or problem-based STEM learning activities as they build a web site. Westinghouse Electric Company N-Visioning A Brighter Future Submitted: October 25, 2013 Grant Size: $3,000 The Westinghouse Electric Company provides hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education project funding. A grant will support conversion of an unused classroom at Baldwin Lane Elementary School into a permanent Science Room and Laboratory. Fallsvale ES seeks support for its Garden Club, i.e., to purchase an indoor grow lab and child-sized gardening tools. The Garden Club is designed to facilitate K-5 Life Science and Ecology education through hands-on planting, growing, harvesting, recycling and composting learning activities. Toshiba America Foundation Submitted: September 15, 2013 Amount: $1,000 The Foundation provides K-5 teachers with funds to support classroom projects. North Shore ES seeks support for the 1 st grade LEGO Robotics Project which will focus on the content areas of Math, Science and Technology as students use a LEGO Education WeDo Robotics kit to build a computer controlled robot. The experience gained by students is anticipated to inspire further interest in science and robotics. California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom Grant Program (2013 Literacy for Life Grants) Submitted: September 23, 2013 Amount: $500 Fallsvale ES s Garden Club seeks support to extend K-5 student Life Science and Ecology learning activities through the growing and harvesting of fruits and vegetables into the winter months. Due to the severe weather conditions in the San Bernardino Mountains, Fallsvale ES is in need of a grow lab to do so. Toyota USA Foundation support will also facilitate BVUSD's capacity to operate the new Big Bear Middle School (MS) STEM Academy currently offered to 7 th graders as well as allow expansion of the Academy to 8 th graders at the MS in 2014. GRANTS IN-PROGRESS October 2013 California Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center - - Elementary & Middle Schools Deadline: December 12, 2013 Grant Size: $50,000 - $150,000 California's 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Program provides funding to create incentives for establishing beforeand after-school enrichment programs that partner schools and communities to provide academic and literacy support and safe, constructive alternatives for youth. Each program must consist of three elements: academic assistance, educational enrichment, and family literacy services. Programs must operate during every regular school day and may operate during summer, intersession, or vacation days. US Soccer Foundation 2013-2014 Safe Places to Play Grant & Program Grant Deadlines: February 1, 2014 or June 1, 2014 US Soccer Foundation grants support soccer programs and fieldbuilding initiatives in the U.S. that keep children in underserved communities active, healthy, and safe. BVUSD is interested in a Safe Places to Play grant which focuses on 8
multi-field and soccer field improvements in four (4) categories: Synthetic Turf ($200,000), Lighting ($50,000), Irrigation $15,000) and Sport Court ($65,000). Safe Places to Play grant awards for field improvements come as in-kind credit with a specific vendor. Typically, a field improvement project will cost more than the vendor credit. Synthetic Turf grants are awarded for the installation of a synthetic field surface from FieldTurf. This funding can be applied toward new field construction or the refurbishment of existing turf fields. Lighting grants are awarded for the purchase of Musco Lighting products to light futsal, natural grass, or synthetic turf fields. Funding does not cover installation. Irrigation grants are awarded for the purchase of Hunter Irrigation products to irrigate natural grass or synthetic turf fields (while irrigation is not required for synthetic turf, it is recommended for cleaning and cooling purposes). Funding does not cover installation. Sport Court grants are awarded for the installation of Sport Court, which is an innovative modular (non-turf) sports surface that delivers superior playability, speed, safety, shock absorption, and traction that is perfect for small-sided soccer or futsal. With its engineering-grade polypropylene surface, a Sport Court is quick to install and can be easily customized to fit the needs of your soccer project. A Safe Places to Play Letter of Inquiry (LOI) is to be sent via email to grants@ussoccerfoundation.org. Within three (3) weeks of submitting 9
an LOI, BVUSD will receive an invitation to complete a full application, which must be submitted by the next application deadline or a brief explanation of why BVUSD was not invited to formally apply, i.e., eligibility issues, does not match the Foundation s mission, etc. American Honda Foundation Deadline: February 1, 2014 Grant Size: $ $20,000 - $75,000 Provide funds to help meet the needs of American society in the areas of youth and scientific education by awarding grants to nonprofits, public school districts, and private/public elementary and secondary schools, while strategically assisting communities in deriving long-term benefits. Support youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment. Kellogg Foundation Deadline: Open Grant Size: $25,000 - $1,250,000 The Foundation s education and learning mission is to ensure that all children get the development and education they need as a foundation for independence and success.
