MEDIA RELEASE 27 October 2014 NHG LAUDS SEVEN PATIENTS FOR EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOUR While healthcare workers are often honoured for their dedication and commitment, it is not every day that patients are lauded for being exemplary. Seven patients from the National Healthcare Group (NHG) will be presented with the Exemplary Patient Award on October 27, in conjunction with NHG Quality Day 2014. The annual Exemplary Patient Awards (EPA) recognises patients who have contributed significantly to a positive experience in healthcare service delivery in our institutions. It commends model patients for lending support to fellow patients as well as hospital staff, and extending extraordinary patience and understanding to hospital staff. The seven winners were nominated by staff from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Polyclinics (NHGP) and the National Skin Centre (NSC). Seventy-six-year-old retiree Mr Michael Wong does not allow age or illness to prevent him from caring for others. Just three months after he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2011, Michael decided to volunteer at the Colon Cancer Group where he manned the Support Group hotline once a week and conducted counselling sessions at the clinics. He also helped to guide patients and visitors around the new pharmacy at TTSH when it opened in 2013 and even went the extra mile to advise them on waiting times. Hailing volunteerism as his second career, Michael s selflessness and positive attitude have rallied numerous patients and their families to find strength and confidence to cope with their challenging situations. At 59, Ms Junainah Eusope is a beacon of hope to those suffering from mental health issues. A mental health advocate with IMH since 2012, Junainah suffered from depression but has since recovered and gone on to support others in need. She teaches pottery to IMH patients as part of their therapy and has been instrumental in improving the patients art-andcraft programmes. She is also a certified Peer Support Specialist with Club HEAL, an 1 of 6

The winners will be presented with their awards by NHG Group Chief Executive Officer, Professor Chee Yam Cheng. - ENDS - About The (NHG) is a leader in public healthcare in Singapore, recognised at home and abroad for the quality of its medical expertise and facilities.
