MEDIA RELEASE 27 October 2014 NHG LAUDS SEVEN PATIENTS FOR EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOUR While healthcare workers are often honoured for their dedication and commitment, it is not every day that patients are lauded for being exemplary. Seven patients from the National Healthcare Group (NHG) will be presented with the Exemplary Patient Award on October 27, in conjunction with NHG Quality Day 2014. The annual Exemplary Patient Awards (EPA) recognises patients who have contributed significantly to a positive experience in healthcare service delivery in our institutions. It commends model patients for lending support to fellow patients as well as hospital staff, and extending extraordinary patience and understanding to hospital staff. The seven winners were nominated by staff from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Polyclinics (NHGP) and the National Skin Centre (NSC). Seventy-six-year-old retiree Mr Michael Wong does not allow age or illness to prevent him from caring for others. Just three months after he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2011, Michael decided to volunteer at the Colon Cancer Group where he manned the Support Group hotline once a week and conducted counselling sessions at the clinics. He also helped to guide patients and visitors around the new pharmacy at TTSH when it opened in 2013 and even went the extra mile to advise them on waiting times. Hailing volunteerism as his second career, Michael s selflessness and positive attitude have rallied numerous patients and their families to find strength and confidence to cope with their challenging situations. At 59, Ms Junainah Eusope is a beacon of hope to those suffering from mental health issues. A mental health advocate with IMH since 2012, Junainah suffered from depression but has since recovered and gone on to support others in need. She teaches pottery to IMH patients as part of their therapy and has been instrumental in improving the patients art-andcraft programmes. She is also a certified Peer Support Specialist with Club HEAL, an 1 of 6

organisation that facilitates individuals with mental illness with reintegration into the community. The winners will be presented with their awards by NHG Group Chief Executive Officer, Professor Chee Yam Cheng. - ENDS - About The (NHG) is a leader in public healthcare in Singapore, recognised at home and abroad for the quality of its medical expertise and facilities. Care is provided through an integrated network of nine primary healthcare polyclinics, acute care hospital, national specialty centres, and business divisions. Together they bring a rich legacy of medical expertise to our philosophy of patient-centric care. NHG s vision of Adding years of healthy life is more than just about healing the sick. It encompasses the more difficult but infinitely more rewarding task of preventing illness and preserving health and quality of life. With some 13,000 staff, NHG aims to provide care that is patient-centric, accessible, seamless, comprehensive, appropriate and cost-effective. As the Regional Health System (RHS) for Central Singapore, it is vital for NHG to partner and collaborate with other stakeholders, community advisors, volunteer welfare organisations and others in this Care Network together with our patients, their families and caregivers to deliver integrated healthcare services and programmes that help in Adding Years of Healthy Life to all concerned. NATIONAL HEALTHCARE GROUP QUALITY DAY 2014 Factsheet About NHG Quality Day 2014 Quality and service excellence are important measures of productivity; they ensure that our healthcare system remains safe for our patients and good health delivery and outcomes are regularly reviewed to make us one of the best healthcare providers in the world. As healthcare continues to evolve, we continuously seek improvements, innovation and best practices not just in Singapore but globally. The annual NHG Quality Day celebrates efforts across the Group to enhance Quality, as well as provides a platform for knowledge sharing. This is the 14 th installation of the event. Healthcare Supplier Awards The inaugural Healthcare Supplier Awards was established by NHG, with support from the National University Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, to recognise the significant roles our business partners play in supporting healthcare institutions to provide affordable, quality healthcare to patients. A total of 13 awards across three categories Operational Excellence, Innovation, and Environmental Sustainability - will be presented on 27 October 2014. Clinical Practice Improvement Programme Graduation Ceremony Since 2002, NHG has trained over 1500 staff under the Clinical Practice Improvement Programme (CPIP). Doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administrators who undergo the course have in turn gone on to initiate over 1000 improvement projects, which have led to increases in productivity and patient safety over the years. A total of 115 graduands from the 32 to 34 th cohorts received their certificates on 21 October 2014, including participants from the Intermediate and Long Term Care sector such as Ren Ci Community Hospital. Excellence in Action Awards The Excellence in Action Awards (EIA) recognise individuals and teams who inspire continuous improvements in their workplace, foster a sense of community amongst colleagues, and provide care to their patients. The EIA was established in 2002. A total of 83 submissions were received this year. 34 awards will be given to winners across three categories Leadership, Individual and Team. Exemplary Patient Awards Since the first Exemplary Patient Awards (EPA) in 2008, NHG has seen an increase in the number of patients who volunteer their time and effort to support fellow patients. The EPA not only recognises volunteers, but also patients who have left a lasting impression on staff for their grace in adversity and positive attitudes. Patients are nominated by NHG member institutions Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Polyclinics (NHGP) and National Skin Centre (NSC). A total of seven patients will receive the award on 27 October 2014. 3 of 6
