December 2018 LEGION NEWS SAN LUIS OBISPO POST 66 COMMANDER S CORNER Happy December, Legion Family! The rains have started and the hills around our house are starting to green up. Our Post will be catching the green (and red) of the holiday spirit, being decorated for the Christmas Dinner on December 12th. Our own chef, Bill Crowe and his assistants, along with Master of the Pork Rib BBQ, Legionnaire Tom Wiggins and his crew, will be serving a Holiday feast! Remember, this is the Toys for Tots night, so the Surprise Santa and the beautiful Mrs. Claus will be delighting the Post toy recipients. Chaplain Bart has hooked us up with the Marine Toys for Tots, so please bring in a new unwrapped toy for donation. A heartfelt THANK YOU to all who have given me guidance and suggestions this first half of my term as Commander. I, and our Post family, are truly blessed to be your choice of Veteran and Community support. San Luis Obispo Post 66 literally could not provide services without your participation. I hope we have also had a bit of fun along the way! Your American Legion Post 66 family wishes you and yours a blessed Christmas holiday. The Post is closed for repairs and cleaning from December 13th, 2018 through Jan 5th, 2019, when meetings for the Legion resume. Things always change, so get into the happy habit of checking for updates on the Post 66 website at Calendar/slolegion.org. RANDY EARL, COMMANDER 2018-19 SAN LUIS OBISPO POST 66 THE AMERICAN LEGION ADJUTANT MESSAGE The holidays are upon us if traveling: Safe Journey. This time of the year we remember past times, good and bad and friends who are no longer at the table with us. Let s take time to remember our active duty comrades, our first responders and the victims of the tragedies of the past few weeks. December is our Christmas dinner and a visit from our favorite Jolly Old Soul. Remember to bring an unwrapped gift for kids and/or a gift card for the teenagers. If you can t make the dinner you can drop off a toy on Monday nights or the first Wednesday night from 1700 1900. POST EVERLASTING Terrill Newell William Buffuna 9 years 22 years MEMBERSHIP REPORT Total number of members 545, paid members 313, unpaid members 232 NEW LEGION MEMBERS Orlando Ortega Army, Gulf A heads up as our 2018 membership years is coming to an end. Check your membership cards, if they have 2019 you re good to go. Currently we have 543 members of which 201 have not yet paid their dues. Many will be getting calls from the 1st and 2nd Vice Commanders reminding you that your dues are due. If you have any questions or looking to help out at the Post let me know. RICH POWELL, POST ADJUTANT KEEP THE FAITH FIRST VICE COMMANDER Hey all: We are having a good year and things seems to me falling into order. There are going to be a few changes in furniture arrangement around the post. The office has already undergone a spruce up. Next will be the dining hall. Same stuff, just in different places. Let us know what you think. We had a little informal get together of family leaders on the 19th of November. It was a good idea to let everyone just talk about what is good, what needs to be fixed and what we would like to see in the future I hope that we can do that again soon, One of the responsibilities of the 1st Vice Commander is membership accountability, including dues. It is the end of the year very soon and we still need to finish collecting 2019 dues. It is hoped that we can get this done by the end of December. It is a very attainable goal. Go online to mylegion.org or see Rich Powell if you like a more personal experience.if you must wait, you will be getting phone calls from me and others to pay up. I hate telemarketers; so please don't make me one. Recently, we have had a few post transfers. People move into the area and start looking for a post. We are trying to be very proactive in returning calls and inviting people to join us during the Monday Night Socials. This is a great time to have new members meet us and see what we have to offer. This was very evident on Baked Potato Night in November. We had a transfer from Portland Oregon call and we invited her to join us that night. I was really proud of how friendly and welcoming everyone was and how much attention we showed to this new person. It is what we need to do for every new member, so they feel like they get the same treatment and become part of the family. And while I am on the subject, we are beginning to see better turn out at the socials. The Ladies Auxiliary works very hard and deserves our support for this program. This is a major source of revenue for them and it is a real relaxed and fun time. If you have never attended one of the socials, stop by most any Monday night for an inexpensive dinner and some laughs. I wish everyone a very nice Holiday Season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Festive Kwanzaa. I hope that covers everyone. That's all folks, for this month. DAVID GLIDDEN 1ST VICE AL RIDERS MUSINGS The Legion Riders have had a great November in our great weather. It began with a ride to Morro Bay, a memorial ride to Orcutt, a fundraiser for the Welcome Home Military Heroes at the Peacock Farms, putting out and retrieving the flags at the cemeteries, and our Veterans Day Event at the Cambria Post 432. This event was attended by over 300 and more than 50 motorcycles. I attended the ALR Presidents meeting in Lompoc which was SLO Legion News pr@slolegion.org December 2018

attended by 50-plus members. As I write this I am preparing for rain and my family for Thanksgiving! What a great community we have. Please come to our last meeting of the year on December 5th. DAN DOC DALE AL AUXILIARY Greetings Legion Family, We had a tremendously successful Raffle and Silent Auction at our November 14th dinner. All the auction items were bid on and the Auxiliary wants to thank you for all your support and generosity for our yearly fundraiser. We also want to thank ALL the people who worked so tirelessly to put on this great event. We couldn't do it without you! Don't forget our upcoming Christmas Party and dinner on December 12th. Remember to bring a $10 value unwrapped gift to put under the tree for the children. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there too! So, bring your grandchildren and greatgrandchildren to see Santa and get a gift. Our last Monday night social of this year will be on December 10 and our next Monday night social will be on January 7, 2019. Remember Auxiliary members, there will be NO Auxiliary meeting in January 2019. The Auxiliary wishes all of you and your families a Blessed and Happy Holiday Season. Hope to see you all back again next year. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY DIANE HELFRICH, ALA 1ST. VICE PRESIDENT SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, SQUADRON 66 Season s Greetings, Sons and friends. Squadron 66 had a very successful November, supporting the Post s and Son s Sgt@Arms in their honorary duty to see that Veteran resting places in the three SLO Cemeteries have an American flag placed at their grave marker on Veteran s Day. Flags were placed on November 10th, and retrieved on November 12th. The Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts participated bringing a bit of joy and chaos to the event. On Veteran s Day (observed, 12th) the Squadron was delighted to partner with the Central Coast Veteran s Memorial Museum by providing an All-American lunch for $5.00. We are starting the planning process for 2019, looking to support the Post in the celebrations of both The American Legion and San Luis Obispo Post 66 s Centennial Year. We would be glad to hear your suggestions for the upcoming year. Squadron 66 wishes you and yours a Happy Holiday Season. May a memorable Merry Christmas be yours, and Best Wishes for the New Year! There is no other time more important than that spent with loved ones. As part of the Legion family, we welcome all those who wish to take an active part in our many Squadron 66 activities. If you are the son of a Veteran (or a grandson), a Son who has been inactive, or know of a Veteran s son or grandson who could benefit and grow while participating in our active Squad, I encourage you to contact any Sons member, or simply attend our brief meeting on the first Post open Monday of the month at 6:00 pm. GREG HAYES, SONS COMMANDER 2018-19 FOR GOD AND COUNTRY, SERVING VETERANS & COMMUNITY SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, SQUADRON 66 POST HISTORIAN S REVIEW Did you know? The Memorial Day Service in San Luis Obispo has been performed since 1885. In that year the Civil War Veterans of the Fred Steele Post #70 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) began conducting the Memorial Day service. Post 66 was asked to take over this responsibility in 1923 when only three of the GAR could answer the roll call. All three along with over 100 of their fellow Civil War Veterans are buried at the cemetery in SLO. Send me any pictures including a description that would be of interest for our Post history.
