Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Friends of Shelby is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, enhancement and stewardship of Shelby Park and Shelby Bottoms. It works to protect the natural and historical integrity of the area by supporting appropriate recreational activities, maintaining and enhancing its features, promoting programs that inspire appreciation and conservation of Park and Bottoms, and advocating for a level playing field for the various user groups. Impact Friends of Shelby Park & Bottoms supports a wide variety of improvement projects and events throughout the park each year. The projects completed last year (see below) are typical of the accomplishments of our board and volunteers on an annual basis. Friends of Shelby Park focuses on improvements to park infrastructure, like installing an outdoor exercize area, freeze-proof water fountains, and 5 beehives at the Cornelia Fort Air Park. Since 2014 we have been investing in infrastructure improvements, including running electric and water to the site. Collectively, these investments support increased use of the Cornelia Fort Air Park and its surrounds. Friends of Shelby Park also installed a bike repair station at the playground near the Farmer's Market and worked with Scout Troop 3 to fund an Eagle Scout project that repaired or replaced 16 bird houses through the Park. We also focus on supporting park improvements and maintenance. Throughout the year, our board and volunteers also completed several park improvement projects, planting trees, performing maintenance on planting beds, and supporting projects to improve signage and trails throughout the greenway. Finally, we support the great work done by the staff of the Shelby Park Nature Center. We support ongoing education for all Shelby Park Nature Center staff, helping them attend conferences, further their education, and bring great new ideas back to Shelby Park. We've helped them create an activity book that is available through the Nature Center! In 2018, we plan to help improve signage to the building and educational displays to help our community learn more about the wetlands and river eco-systems that surround us. Needs Our mission is to help preserve, protect and enhance historic Shelby Park and Bottoms. We do this through helping maintain its features, promoting programs, supporting recreational activities, engaging user groups and undertaking revitalization efforts within the park. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Opportunities to support Friends of Shelby Park & Bottoms, include annual memberships, ticketed events like the Cornelia Fort Pickin' Party Series, and volunteer opportunities in the park.
