NEXT PARTNERS 2 NEXT WHAT DOES NEXT OFFER?

NEXT National Experimental Therapy Partnership is a public-private partnership within clinical research, consisting of all regions of Denmark, one GTS institute, twelve pharmaceutical companies and three associated partners. NEXT will make Denmark the pharmaceutical industry s country of choice for early clinical trials of new drugs for patients and with particular focus on Proof of Concept trials. NEXT offers a one-stop shop for the pharmaceutical industry and hospital researchers: Easy access to Denmark s strongest clinical research environments during the early phases of clinical research, national recruitment of patients, and optimised administrative and regulatory processes. NEXT Centers focus on selected disease areas and provide the readiness, which is required for the launch of early clinical trials within oncology and dermatology at short notice with considerable flexibility. Moreover, NEXT guarantees a rapid and quality-based implementation of specific research projects within precision medicine. Additional NEXT Centers are in the pipeline, which means that we will cover more disease areas in the future. NEXT optimises the feasibility process. When a company wishes to run an early clinical trial, the first point of contact is the Center Coordinator at the NEXT Center. The Center Coordinator ensures that the feasibility enquiry is distributed at the NEXT Center and, within one week, the company receives compiled feedback from the clinics in NEXT with a feasibility assessment and an expression of interest from potential investigators. The industry needs only one single point of contact to source national feedback from all potential Danish hospital environments for a specific clinical trial. NEXT WHAT DOES NEXT OFFER? 3

CENTER FOR ONCOLOGY & HAEMATOLOGY The Center for Oncology & Haematology is based at the Phase I Unit, Department of Oncology, Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and is coordinated by Chief Physician Morten Mau-Sørensen. In addition to the Phase I Unit at Rigshospitalet, the Center for Oncology & Haematology comprises the Unit for Experimental Cancer Treatment at Herlev Hospital, the Department of Oncology at Odense University Hospital, Department of Oncology and the Department of Haematology at Aarhus University Hospital, the Department of Oncology and the Department of Haematology at Aalborg University Hospital and the Department of Oncology at Vejle Sygehus. Genomic analysis is carried out on all patients at the Center for Oncology & Haematology. By combining this data with biological and clinical patients data, NEXT will help to implement precision medicine in future cancer therapies. Cancer patients are referred to clinical trials based on the molecular profiles of their disorder, for which purpose NEXT is building a national bioinformatics database. As a very special service and a result from the feasibility process, the Center for Oncology & Haematology offers the industry an opportunity to discuss specific aspects of patient recruitment at a very early stage. Rigshospitalet has carried out genomic analyses for several years and can provide the industry with an assessment of predicted recruitment of a sub-population of patients with a specific disease characteristic. This is achieved by means of DNA and RNA sequencing, e.g. the frequency of specific gene expressions. CENTER FOR DERMATOLOGY The Center for Dermatology is based at the Department of Dermatology at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen and is coordinated by Professor Simon Francis Thomsen. In addition to the Department of Dermatology at Bispebjerg Hospital, the Center for Dermatology comprises the dermatology departments at Gentofte Hospital, Zealand University Hospital, Odense University Hospital and Aarhus University Hospital. The five departments in Center for Dermatology cover the entire Danish population and treat all forms of dermatologic and venereologic diseases. The center s doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and pharmacists are all trained in clinical research and ensure the highest possible quality in the execution of clinical trials. In 2016, the Center for Dermatology will establish a national database of patients with skin diseases with specific patient characteristics starting with patients with psoriasis and atopic eczema. The database will become an effective tool for patient recruitment to clinical trials. CENTER FOR RESPIRATORY MEDICINE The Center for Respiratory Medicine is based at the Respiratory Research Unit, Bispebjerg Hospital and is coordinated by Professor Vibeke Backer. In addition to the Respiratory Research Unit, Bispebjerg Hospital, the Center for Respiratory Medicine comprises the Respiratory and Internal Medicine at Naestved Hospital, the Respiratory Medicine Research Unit at Odense University Hospital, the Department of Respiratory Diseases and Allergy Research at Aarhus University Hospital and the Research Unit at Department of Respiratory Medicine at Aalborg University Hospital. The six departments of the Center for Respiratory Medicine are all highly experienced in the field of clinical research and are well-prepared to conduct early phase clinical trials within respiratory medicine. The doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and pharmacists are all trained to state-of-the-art standards and the national collaboration ensures a uniform high quality in the execution of clinical studies across the different participating units. The individual departments are placed strategically across Denmark to cover the majority of patients with respiratory challenges. In addition, all center members are part of the Danish Respiratory Research Network (DRRN) which facilitates late stage clinical trials among 20+ clinical units in Denmark. The Center for Respiratory Medicine will establish a national database of patients with respiratory diseases with specific patient characteristics, initially focusing on patients with asthma, COPD and fibrosis. The database will become an effective tool of patient recruitment for clinical trials.
