About the Academy European law in practice The Academy of European Law (ERA) was established in 1992 on the initiative of the the European Parliament to provide training in European law to legal practitioners. ERA is a non-profit public foundation, whose patrons include most EU member states, and which is supported financially by the European Union. ERA organises conferences, seminars and language courses at different levels at its centre in Trier, its office in Brussels and around Europe. It also provides e-learning courses and publishes a quarterly journal, ERA Forum. ERA works with all practitioners of law, whether they be judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice, notaries, in-house counsel, law enforcement officers or lawyers in public administration. ERA s budget is provided by the European Union, the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate and participants fees, project funding, commissioned events and interest from the (modest) foundation capital. Patrons of the Academy of European Law (in order of accession) Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate, City of Trier, Association for the Promotion of the ERA German federal states collectively, Germany, Sparkasse Trier, Ireland, Poland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Hungary, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Slovakia, France, Scotland, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Romania, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia and Lithuania.
ERA s Scholarship Programme Benefit from our knowledge ERA s scholarship programme enables practitioners of law be they judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice or in public administration who would not otherwise be able to cover the costs to attend ERA events. The programme was first launched in 2002 to celebrate ERA s tenth anniversary. Contact Jubilee Fund In order to continue to expand the scholarship programme and to ensure even wider access to professional training in European law, ERA created a jubilee fund in 2012, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Academy. With the support of the ERA jubilee fund, the scholarship programme is now open to all less financially able practitioners, and no longer to be limited to the new Member States. DR CSILLA EÖTVÖS ORSOLYA Extremely challenging and valuable experience Feedback from the scholars ATHINA SAMARA Lawyer, Athens, Greece Scholarship: Summer Course on EU Regulation and Supervision of Financial Markets ERA s scholarship programme allowed me to attend the summer course on EU Regulation and Supervision of Financial Markets. As a lawyer specialised in European Law I deal with cases involving aspects of EU law at national and European level. Attending the course allowed me to build on the knowledge I had acquired through my academic and professional experience. This was a valuable experience for me as I acquired a strong understanding of the latest developments and upcoming challenges in the area of EU regulation and supervision of fi nancial markets. The course allowed for practice-oriented discussions with leading experts and practitioners of law from other countries and institutions. I am very thankful to ERA for awarding me the scholarship and providing me with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and update my skills. ANA RICHTER In-house counsel, Sofia, Bulgaria Scholarship: Summer Course on European Labour Law The summer course on European Labour Law at ERA was a wonderful learning opportunity. The seminar was very well organized and contained a good balance of the perspectives of university professors and those of practising lawyers. The practical workshops in groups and the opportunity for discussion enabled me to deepen my legal knowledge and to learn about legal practices in other Member States. The exchange with colleagues from various institutions and different legal backgrounds was extremely valuable. The summer course was a good opportunity to learn about the latest and most important case law. I am very grateful for the scholarship, which gave me the opportunity to participate in this event, which undoubtedly deepened and broadened my legal knowledge. GYÖRGY MARINKÁS Professor s assistant at the University of Miskolc, Hungary Scholarship: Summer Course on European Institutional Law I am a PhD student and professor s assistant in the department of European law at the University of Miskolc. My main focus is the protection of human rights within the EU and the EU s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights. I was therefore very grateful for the opportunity to participate in the summer course on European Institutional Law. The training was well organised and excellent speakers provided us with different perspectives on the functioning of the EU. The visit to the Court of Justice and the social programme gave participants the opportunity for professional networking and to discuss the issues raised during the day in a more informal setting. I am very grateful for the scholarship which allowed me to attend the Summer Course: this was the fi rst time I attended an ERA course, and it will defi nitely not be the last. I would highly recommend this summer course to anyone working in European law. CLAUDIA LO CURTO Applicant lawyer, International tax and legal consulting, Verona, Italy Scholarship: Summer Course European Taxation Law Participating in the Summer Course on European Taxation Law at the ERA was an extremely rewarding experience for me. The course was a step forward for my professional growth and expanded my career perspectives in the international law sector. The Scholarship allowed me to deepen my knowledge about the subject. The Summer course gave me a more complete and clear picture of European taxation law. This was my fi rst experience with an ERA course and I hope to be able to attend an ERA seminar again because ERA offers excellent and high quality training.
Athina Samara Ana Krassimirova Richter György Marinkás KRISTINA MISHEVA Teaching assistant at the business law department at the Faculty of law, University Goce Delchev Shtip, Republic of Macedonia Scholarship: Summer Course on EU Regulation and Supervision of Financial Markets The main focus of my research and teaching is on company law, the legislation applicable to fi nancial institutions, the functions and structure of capital markets and supervisory bodies. I am also working on my PhD thesis on the Supervision of Institutional Investors at the Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. I attended the summer course on EU Financial Market Regulation and Supervision in Trier. This course deepened my knowledge and informed me of new perspectives and trends in the EU rules and regulations on the supervision of the EU fi nancial institutions and market. I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained to my lectures and doctoral thesis. The organisation of the whole course, including printed materials, transport and accommodation as well as social activities, was excellent. As part of the summer course I also had the opportunity to visit the European Central Bank and the European Systemic Risk Board in Frankfurt. I am very grateful for the Peter Caesar scholarship, as without it, I would not have been able to travel to Trier to participate in the ERA summer course. BASAK ÜNAL Assistant Legal Expert, Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Undersecretariat of Treasury, DG of State Aid, Turkey Scholarship: European Emissions Trading System It was established in 2010 with the aim of harmonising Turkish domestic law on state aid with the EU acquis, in accordance with the agreements between Turkey and the EU. I have worked on the modifi cation and preparation of legislation in compliance with EU directives on state aid and the environment. I am currently working on a thesis for the Treasury on the EU Emissions Trading System, World Practices, the Position of Turkey and State Aid in the Emissions Trading System, which is my reason for attending the conference on the European Emissions Trading System. I am particularly interested in the connection between the EU Emissions Trading System and the state aid mechanism, which will become particularly relevant in the post-2013 ETS period. DR CSILLA ORSOLYA EÖTVÖS ELTE University of Budapest, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Budapest, Hungary / Associate at KNP LAW Scholarship: Summer Course on European Intellectual Property Law When I began work as an associate right after my graduation, I was aware that, in addition to national law, I would have to acquire a deep knowledge of European law, particularly if I wanted to advise international clients in the fi eld of intellectual property. The Summer Course on European Intellectual Property Law not only provided an introduction to the fi eld of intellectual property, but also covered all the instruments developed under European or international law. I believe that I will benefi t from the knowledge I acquired during the summer course for a long time. The course also provided me with an update on the relevant case law. This practical knowledge I gained thanks to the Scholarship is exactly the kind of expertise I hoped to acquire, and I am sure that I will take part in ERA conferences again. I work as a lawyer in the General Directorate of State Aid, which forms part of the Undersecretariat of the Treasury of the Prime Ministry of the Republic of Turkey.
ERA cannot fund this project itself and thus depends on donations from third parties. ERA would like to express its sincere thanks to the donors who made the scholarship programme possible.
