September NEWSLETTER Commander s Corner After months and months of preparation and planning, Post 7356 s annual golf tournament was held on Monday, August 21 st. Despite a few clouds partially blocking the total eclipse and a torrential down pour during the post round festivities, the 2017 tournament was yet another great success! Nineteen teams competed for the title. Congratulations to the team of Jim Bray, Jason Lewis, Jim Ecten, and Joe Leluga for winning this year s competition with a round of -21 under par. Well done indeed. Those participating also had the privilege of playing alongside Olympic U.S. Men s Hockey 1980 Gold Medal winning team member, Ken Morrow. A sincere thank you to the numerous comrades who volunteered so much of their time, energy and talents in making sure the tournament went off without a hitch. A special thank you to Bob Eckerle for his extraordinary efforts in making the 2017 th rendition of the tournament, a memorable one. As many of you know, this tournament is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Preliminary numbers indicate that the post netted roughly $7,000. This money will be used to keep our post in good standing, as well as assisting many veterans in need. Our monthly meeting was held last night, Thursday, the 24 th. Of note, one of the sailors missing after the USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore, is a fellow Missourian, Electronics Technician 1 st Class, Charles Nathan Findley. He has family in the area. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Furthermore, comrade Barney Hill was elected to the Junior Vice position. When you see him, please congratulate and wish him well. District Commander, Bob Kirtley paid us a visit and discussed the larger aspects of the VFW within our district. Lastly, members voted to send $500 to the Missouri Voice of Democracy. Beginning in early October, for those who are interested, we would like to start getting together and watching football at the post. The third Saturday of the month for college football and/or Monday Night Football have been mentioned as possibilities. More to follow. Also, be on the lookout for information on a pig roast. VFW VICTORIES IN WASHINGTON FOREVER GI BILL NOW LAW The nearly 1.7 million members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliary is applauding President Trump for signing into law today the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2017. The new Forever GI Bill will have an unparalleled impact on America s service members, veterans and their families because it protects the benefits they ve earned, expands access and eligibility, and properly recognizes the long service and sacrifice of the one percent of Americans who have voluntarily put their personal lives on hold to fight an unimaginable multi-front war for almost 16 years. If you would like weekly updates on what the VFW Legislative Department is doing to make headway in Washington, sign up for the VFW Action Corps here: http://capwiz.com/vfw/mlm/signup.htm MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE The eleventh of September is a solemn day in our nation's history. Hello Auxiliary Members, South Platte Memorial Post 7356 Auxiliary A lot has been taking place at 7356, and a lot more is in store for 2017! A new database has been created just for our organization called MALTA Membership & Auxiliary Leadership Technology Access. All auxiliary members can access MALTA to pay dues or update personal information. More information about MALTA and instructions for logging in can be found at vfwauxiliary.org. If you cannot attend our meetings, please reach out to me or any other auxiliary member to let us know what we can do for you. Again, I invite our members to contact me with any concerns or questions. I can be reached at 816.550.1049 or anita.crowell@yahoo.com.
