Information Sheet for Scouts and Parents What should I expect? (NYLT) is Scouting s premiere youth leadership development program. NYLT provides Scouts and Venturers with experiences and tools for becoming great leaders. The skills learned through NYLT will benefit you as you lead in your unit and throughout your life. The course requires six days of training spread across two weekends and offers an intense, fun, hands-on and challenging experience. The course models the life of a youth-led troop through a month of meetings, followed by an outdoor event. Upon arrival, each participant is placed in a patrol (participants from the same home unit should expect to be in different patrols). A Troop Guide is assigned to each patrol to guide the participants throughout the course. Using the EDGE method, the staff will teach the concepts and skills that are the core content of the course, giving them not just the knowledge but the experience of putting that knowledge to use as part of a team. Patrols are challenged early in the course to develop a presentation on their Quest for the Meaning of Leadership and to deliver that presentation at the end of the course. Who should attend? To be eligible for this course Scouts must have attained the rank of First Class, and be 13 years of age by April 26, 2019. Venture Scouts must have earned one of the Venturing Core Awards. The Boy/Venture Scout must be an experienced camper with good camping, hiking, and outdoor cooking skills. He/she should have the potential to hold a leadership position in his/her unit. He/she must agree to spend the entire scheduled time participating in the course. When should I arrive? The course is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm on April 26, 2019. All participants should be onsite and checked-in by that time. Registration will open at 4:30 pm. A copy of the Scout s medical form (Parts A, B & C) should be brought to registration. Participants will be sleeping inside during the first weekend. Arrival for the second weekend can begin any time after 4:00 pm on May 17, 2019. Participants will be camping outside during the second weekend and will need to setup camp before the course starts at 6:00 pm that evening. NYLT is not a summer camp - rather it is a leadership-training course in an outdoor environment. There are no rank advancement opportunities during the course. The purpose of the course is to develop leadership skills that Scouts/Venturers will use in their home unit and throughout their lives. Please save this information sheet for future reference.
