Condition: Given an warning order for movement, a towed-cannon, self-propelled, or MLRS battery, a general area in which to emplace, aim point or general azimuth of fire, no earlier to cease firing from old position time and a no later than time to be fire capable in new position, map, compass, optical device, a radio, advanced party with vehicles, and an automated position location device. Standard: Direct the reconnaissance, selection and occupation of a position so the entire battery has an area/firing point occupied within the commander's timeline, mission requirements, and without damaging equipment IAW procedures listed in FM 6-50. 1. Prepare a warning order to key personnel. Performance Steps 2. Conduct an initial reconnaissance of the new position. Note: Air recon if possible. a. Conduct map reconnaissance. b. Determine initial method of movement and order of march. c. Select a primary and any alternate routes. d. Determine any likely ambush sites and plan on-call fires. 3. Develop initial movement plan (include primary and alternate routes). a. assess movement methods that mitigate the loss/limitation of the battery's firing capability. b. Operate the Gun Laying Positioning System (GLPS). c. Determine order of march, start point, check points, route markers, rally points, and release point. d. Develop strip map or overlay. e. Determine administrative and recovery plan. 4. Brief advance party on movement plan. 5. Conduct a ground reconnaissance to determine the suitability of the primary route. 6. Select the final location of the new firing unit position. a. Select areas that will successfully accomplish the mission. b. Consider the tactical situation, communications, defilade, trafficability, and effects of the weather. c. Supervise a security sweep. d. Form a defensive perimeter. e. Establish a skeletal perimeter. f. Verify communications from the position. 7. Direct the preparation of the new position. a. Verify positions for howitzers, FDC, aiming circle, and logistical support. b. Direct the organization of the LP/OP to enhance survivability and mission accomplishment. Page 3

c. Verify entry control and traffic patterns to include primary entrance/exit, emergency entrance/exit, and helicopter landing zone. 8. Lay the battery/platoon. a. Operate the aiming circle. (1) Orient the Aiming Circle. (2) Obtain a line of sight on the circle. (3) Announce PLATOON ADJUST, AIMING POINT THIS INSTRUMENT. (4) Place the announced deflection on the verification circle with the upper motion. (5) Sight on the howitzer telescope with the lower motion. (6) Announce the howitzer number and the deflection. b. Compute minimum quadrant elevation. (1) Receive Piece to Crest Range (PCR) from the section chief. (2) Receive the angles of site to crest measurements from all weapons. (3) Compute vertical angle. (4) Compute Complementary Angle of Site (Comp Site). (5) Determine the elevation for the appropriate charge corresponding to the PCR. (6) Determine safety factor of Two Forks. (7) Sum the first four angles and Two Forks for the charge computed. (8) Repeat computation for each charge to be fired. c. Operate the Gun Laying Positioning System (GLPS). (1) Select GUN LAYING from the menu. (2) Lay by Deflection. (a) Select AzOfFir. (b) Input azimuth of fire. (c) Press ENTR. (d) Sight on selected howitzer. Page 4

(3) Access gun coordinates data. (a) Select gun coordinates from the menu. (b) Select the gun number. (c) Press ENTR to select the gun. (d) Press ENTR to display coordinates. (e) Press ENTR to display deflection, vertical angle, and range to the howitzer. (f) Press ENTR to repeat the process for each howitzer. (g) Press CE to return to the Gun Laying Menu. (4) Lay by azimuth. (a) Select Lay By Azimuth. (b) Sight on the Forward Station. (c) Press ENTR to measure the direction, vertical angle, and range. (d) Press enter to display the coordinates. (e) Store the coordinates. (f) Select the gun number. (g) Enter the data. (5) Access azimuth coordinates data. (a) Select Azi Coord from the menu. (b) Select the correct forward station number. (c) Press ENTR to select the number. (d) Press ENTR again to display the coordinates. (e) Press ENTR again to display the measured azimuth, vertical angle and range. (f) Press Enter again to repeat the process. (g) Press CE to return to the Gun Laying Menu. 9. Verify preparation for firing. 10. Direct preparation for alternate position. Page 5

It is a continual process and starts with deliberate planning. Always be alert to ways to protect our environment during training and missions. In doing so, you will contribute to the sustainment of our training resources while protecting people and the environment from harmful effects. Safety: In a training environment, leaders must perform a risk assessment in accordance with FM 5-19, Composite Risk Management. Leaders will complete a DA Form 7566 COMPOSITE RISK MANAGEMENT WORKSHEET during the planning and completion of each task and sub-task by assessing mission, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available-time available and civil considerations, (METT-TC). Note: During MOPP training, leaders must ensure personnel are monitored for potential heat injury. Local policies and procedures must be followed during times of increased heat category in order to avoid heat related injury. Consider the MOPP work/rest cycles and water replacement guidelines IAW FM 3-11.4, NBC Protection, FM 3-11.5, CBRN Decontamination. The local commander must personally approve all training judged to be high risk. The operations officer is responsible for conducting a risk assessment in accordance with the safety assessment matrix contained in the Course Management Plan, and for obtaining the commander's approval prior to conducting such training. The principal instructor is responsible implementing safety measures according to the local safety standing operating procedure.
