Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Humane Society of Sumner County (HSSC) is committed to finding responsible guardians for homeless animals, controlling pet overpopulation through our SANS (Spay and Neuter Sumner County) Campaign, collaborative efforts to end the euthanasia of adoptable animals, reunification of lost animals with their guardians, the promotion of humane education, and the compassionate treatment of all animals. Background The Humane Society of Sumner County formed as a non-profit in 1974 and was one of the first 10 such animal welfare organizations in the state. The organization has diligently served the community since that time and has gone through several transitions as the discipline of animal welfare has evolved. Today, HSSC is a limited access adoption center meaning we hold animals longer than the mandated 3 business day reclaim period to give owners a chance to reunite with their beloved animal(s) and/or to give these adoptable animals a chance at being discovered. In addition to providing sanctuary for animals in needs, HSSC provides: an adoption program, maintains a lost & found services, provides sterilization solutions through our SANS (Spay and Neuter Sumner County) certificate and program by contributing to the HAWC (Humane Association of Wilson County) Spay Mobile which comes to Gallatin monthly to provide surgeries for those needing assistance. Every adopted animal from our program is sterilized prior to going to their forever home. Our primary source of funding is from the contributions of generous individuals, businesses, and organizations that make it possible for HSSC to thrive in the mission of assisting animals in need. The Humane Society of Sumner County is a private, non-profit 501c3 organization. Impact 2008 Recognition: Petfinder.com Disaster Preparedness Grant TN SOS Community Enhancement Grant Recipient Linda Parker Ross Foundation Recipient Community Foundation Recipient for Macon County Tornado Relief Assistance Hendersonville Key to the City Recipient Petco Foundation Tree of Life Recipient HSSC accomplishments during the last year: Every animal that leaves our adoption center is: sterilized, heartworm/feu-leuk tested, rabies vaccinated, in addition to any extraordinary medical procedures needed. Humane Education is a priority and HSSC is diligently working to supply Kind News to every classroom in Sumner County. Several vols/employees are trained in the area of animal disaster response. HSSC continues to contribute to the HAWC spay mobile which comes at least once a month to provide sterilization surgeries for folks who qualify. Through our SANS (Spay and Neuter Sumner County) certificate and the generosity of local veterinarians, HSSC estimates to have distributed thousands in the last year further reducing the overpopulation. HSSC assisted our neighbors in Macon County by taking in 22 tornado dogs as a part of the recovery & relief efforts. Current goals 2008: 1) Strengthen and expand the Development program to ensure sustainability and growth to exceed the mission of HSSC. 2) Assist more animals by maximizing our adoption program to unite homeless pets with their forever guardians. 3) Continue to hire, train, and retain a highly qualified team that is essential and passionate about HSSC's mission. 4) To continue expanding the Humane Education Program. 5) To continue developing an engaged board of directors who will serve as a liaison to the community and provide policy, oversight and secure resources to further the organization. 6) To grow our SANS campaign (Spay and Neuter Sumner County) so that folks understand how important it is to sterilize pets and eliminate the unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable companion animals. Needs We are blessed to have a facility in which to provide sanctuary for homeless and abandoned animals. However, the current facility is inadequate in size and amenities to meet the needs of the community and our animals. A new building is greatly needed to reflect the true beauty of this organization which serves the growing community of Sumner County. If you would like to leave a legacy to animals which will assist HSSC in this need and goal, please contact scherry911@aol.com. Service Categories Primary Organization Category 2
Animal Related / Animal Protection & Welfare Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Sumner Board Chair Statement The Humane Society of Sumner County has undergone many positive improvements and has experienced an explosion of supporters in the last two years under the organization's dynamic new leadership. As a volunteer governed and non-profit organization, the Humane Society of Sumner County is obviously a labor of love for which many folks come together solely for the purpose of giving homeless animals a second chance at a good life. These folks include: volunteers, veterinarians, the adoption center team, board members, vet techs, foster folks, rescues, and the many other good hearted and dedicated people that work collaboratively to provide an animal with another chance for a good life. The homeless animals are the number one priority of this organization. However, what may not be directly evident is that in assisting these animals, we are also supporting our fellow citizens and are making the community a more appealing place to live and work through our diligent efforts. For those folks who may be facing a change of life crisis where they can no longer care for their beloved furry companion, this organization goes to great efforts to offer a safe place and peace of mind for those having to tearfully surrender for re-homing. Our organization has made a positive impact on the county by taking in homeless animals, spaying & neutering them, and also humanely euthanizing them when necessary. We strive to adopt back into the community healthy and temperamentally sound companion animals. The Humane Society of Sumner County has brought Humane Education into our county classrooms so that our youngest citizens have an opportunity to develop an appreciation and foundation of respect for animals and the environment. Please join us in the effort to make a positive difference in the lives of Sumner County's animals. 3
