GATOR ALMAR Page 4 Marine Corps History Marine Corps History - NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 10 November 1921 / First formal commemoration of the Marine Corps birthday. Major General John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47 summarizing the history, mission and tradition of the Marine Corps and directed that it be read each 10 November to celebrate the beginning of the Marine Corps on 10 November 1775. 7 December 1941 / On a peaceful Sunday Morning on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, the United States was thrust into the war that they were trying to avoid. At just before 8:00 AM nearly 200 Japanese planes attacked the Airfields at Pearl Harbor followed quickly by another wave of torpedo bombers that attacked the ships that were anchored there. A total of nine ships were sunk, including the USS Arizona, and 21 ships were severely damaged. Over 2,300 Americans were killed in the attack and nearly 1,200 were injured. 15 December 1948 / The Secretary of the Navy signed a "Memorandum of Agreement" with the State Department which laid the basis for the modern Marine Security Guard program at U.S. embassies throughout the world. WORLD WAR I / NOVEMBER 1918 / ARMISTICE DAY (NOW VETERANS DAY) 11AM / 11 / 11 / 1918 Fighting stopped in a truce, although a peace tready was not signed until 1919. Milton Lewis Young Marines. The BOY SCOUTS (EAGLE) PROGRAM awarded 39 more Good Citizenship Awards (April-June 2017). Department of Florida membership stands at over 3,606 with an additional 695 delinquent members. A major effort will be made this year to reduce this number. Our Gator Detachment has already made significant progress - we now have no delinquent members. Also, the Department of Florida was awarded the Tom Perrone Award for having the most new members. And we are #2 in the State for administrative efficiency. MCL has instituted a new Honorary Active Duty membership category. Active Duty Marines, FMF Corpsman, and FMF Chaplins can now become Honorary Active Duty members (free) of the MCL for the duration of their enlistment.
