BOARD ROOM NEWS Enclosure #1 is Volume 1, Issue 3 of Board Room News from SBCSC Board of School Trustees President Marcia Hummel. This newsletter is published monthly. 2. ISTEP+ END OF COURSE ASSESSMENTS In preparation for the ISTEP+ End of Course Assessments in Algebra 1, English 10, and Biology, a test coordinator's meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2:00 p.m., Administration Building, 3rd floor meeting room. John Ritzler, 283-8169 3. 2010 TEACHER OF THE YEAR CEREMONY The 31 st Annual Celebration of Excellence in Teaching Ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Century Center s Bendix Theater honoring the 33 building teachers of the year. Enclosure #2 lists the honorees, as well as the Corporation Teacher of the Year, Runner-Up, and the Special Honors Group. Tom Fujimura, 283-8055 4. PURCHASE ORDER REQUESTS Please make sure that all purchase requisitions are input into the system early enough to allow delivery to be made prior to the schools being closed for the summer months. Orders that are placed early will ensure proper delivery, and will ensure proper payments for all invoices. 5. PROCEDURES FOR BOOKING ROOMS AT CENTURY CENTER All requests for rooms at Century Center must go through the Office of Communications. Please contact Pam Kollar at 283-8288 or pkollar@sbcsc.k12.in.us to complete a reservation sheet. Do not contact Century Center directly. The earlier you can request a room the better. Before scheduling your event, please make sure the room reservation has been confirmed. Confirmation will be sent to you after the contract has been finalized. A copy of the signed contract will be sent to you. Per our lease agreement with Century Center, the rooms we can reserve at no cost are Suites 16 and 18. Bendix Theater and Recital Hall may also be reserved at no cost when they are available. A technician fee is charged when using the Bendix Theater for rehearsals and performances. This charge has to be paid by the department renting the theater. If any other rooms are requested, Century Center will charge a license fee. The charge depends on what room it is. All refreshments are made through Centerplace Catering at Century Center. We cannot take in any outside food or beverage. After a room as been reserved and contract signed, Centerplace Catering (235-9151) will contact you directly for menu selection and you will be billed accordingly. Century Center has now outsourced their media services. There will charges for all media services and again, the department using the facility will be billed directly. 6. RETIREMENT/RECOGNITION DINNER The 2009-10 SBCSC Recognition and Retirement Dinner will be held on May 13 th at Century Center. Those employees who are being honored for their years of service or retirement have been sent invitations. Responses are due to the Office of Communications by next Friday, April 23 rd. JOSEPH COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY Please see enclosure #3 for programs for the month of April in conjunction with the One Book, One Michiana program

8. IMPOSSIBLE 2 POSSIBLE Impossible 2 Possible (I2P) creates and delivers innovative experiential learning to students of all ages. Please visit www.impossible2possible.com for a free unique learning experience. The team does ultimate marathons while incorporating a classroom project such as climate change in the Arctic, fresh water shortages in Africa, ecology, biology, math, etc. The experience is brought into the classroom using technology and donated laptops. The program is free for up to 10,000 students per expedition. The next expedition is in Siberia and there are 1,100 spots still open. If you are interested, please visit their website. BIG BAND BASH The Big Band Bash is being held at John Adams High School on Friday, April 30, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The event is a dance and concert for all ages featuring all styles of jazz from the big band era, swing era and present. Live music is supplied by the two award-winning jazz bands at John Adams, with vocalists from the John Adams Show Choir as well as faculty and staff. The LaSalle Academy Jazz Ensemble will be this year s guest band. The John Adams Band Boosters will provide concessions as well as a silent auction and raffle. Cost of the dance/concert is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for high school and middle school students with school I.D. and free to children under the age of 12. For tickets call the John Adams High School bookstore at 283-7700 or the John Adams band office at 283-7721. Tickets will also be available at the door. 10. EMPLOYEE DISCOUNTS For a list of businesses that give discounts to SBCSC employees, please see enclosure #4. If you are aware of any other employee discount offers, please contact the Office of Communications and we ll include it in future publications. 11. BIKE THE BEND Bike the Bend is a non-competitive bicycling event is created for riders of all ages and skill levels and takes place over 30 miles of streets and trails through South Bend, Mishawaka and the University of Notre Dame on Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. For more information see enclosure #5 or visit www.bikethebend.com.

12. FREEDOM FROM SMOKING Join Tobacco Education Specialist Jill Sabo for the next six week smoking cessation program hosted by the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. The sessions take place starting on Wednesday June 2, and continue every Wednesday until July 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The classes will take place in the Education Center, Conference room C, located on the Garden level of the hospital. For more information see enclosure #6 or call Jill at (574) 239-5298. 13. 2010 CENSUS Indiana educators are encouraged to remind families to participate in the 2010 Census. The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. Census data are used to apportion Congressional seats to states, and to distribute more the $400 billion in federal funds to tribal, state and local governments each year and to make decisions about what community services to provide. For more information about the census visit www.census.gov/schools. 14. COACHES VS. CANCER GOLF OUTING Please see enclosure #7 for information on the 1 st Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Outing. The outing is in memory of Coach Mahlon Lowery at Orchard Hills Country Club, in Buchanon Michigan on Sunday, May 2, 2010. There is a $240.00 per team fee, which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and dinner following the event. $80.00 of the fee will go to Coaches vs. Cancer. Kirby Whitacre, 283-8056 15. TAP PARENT WORKSHOP A parent workshop sponsored by TAP (Transforming Action through Power) will be held this Saturday, April 17 at Navarre Intermediate Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The event will feature Superintendent Kapsa and is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This is free and open to the public. See enclosure #8 for more details.

16. MUSIC GRANT PROPOSAL Heather Brothers, music teacher from McKinley is in the running for a $5,000.00 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Grant Program to purchase new instruments for McKinley s music program. To help out Heather, log onto www.refresheverything.com/helpmusiceducation everyday to vote on her proposal. Voting takes place until April 30, 2010. 17. GRANT OPPORTUNITY Public school teachers are invited to apply for Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program. The program awards a total of $1 million annually to teachers across the United States who motivate and inspire students (grades 1 through 12) to achieve excellence. The grant program is designed to recognize outstanding teaching and instructional creativity in public schools that serve economically disadvantaged students. Innovation grants averaging $5,000 each will be awarded to individual teachers working to impact classroom innovation and improve instruction. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 will be awarded to teams of teachers to support scaling up the implementation of successful approaches developed with innovation grants. GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP The Siemens Foundation is hosting Sensing Our World 2010 a Global Health Summer Science Camp at the University of Notre Dame. This is a week long, all-day summer science camp that has been especially designed for students aged 11 to 14. The camp takes place from July 12 16, 2010. 19. CLEAN YOUR FILES DAY Clean Your Files Day is Thursday, April 22, 2010 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the College Football Hall of Fame. Bring papers to the east parking lot. Unlimited paper recycling will be provided by Borden Waste-Away Service. In addition, secure recycling will be provided by Central Files, Inc. You may bring up to 100 lbs. (approx. 2-3 file boxes) of secure documents to the collection site to be shredded for free. Secure documents over 100 lbs. may be taken directly to Central Files, Inc. at 922 South Main St., South Bend. For more information, call Solid Waste Management District at 574-235-9971. 20. MICHIANA ON THE MOVE The Michiana on the Move Half-Million Mile Challenge has begun. If you have not registered to join the movement, please visit michianaonthemove.org and register today. All registered participants are eligible for drawings and other prizes. Michiana on the Move pedometers are beintg sold at the YMCA for $10.
